They're making a TV movie about Dolly Parton's early life and the child actress who's going to play the Tennessee mountain girl-turned-superstar got the news Monday from none other than Dolly Parton herself.

It happened on the Today show, when little Alyvia Lind, who turns 8 in two weeks, sat down next to Parton, who told her, in that honey-dripping manner of hers, "You have been chosen to play little Dolly in the movie!"

The child with blonde ringlets certainly looked surprised and delighted, although she must have had a clue when Dolly sashayed into the room clad in a clingy teal wrap dress.

Nevertheless, Alyvia jumped in her seat, covered her mouth, and her eyes went round and googly.

The upcoming original movie for NBC, Coat of Many Colors, is named after Parton's 1971 song of the same name, known to be her favorite. The song tells the story of how her mother stitched together a coat for her daughter out of rags given to the family, telling her the biblical story of Joseph and his Coat of Many Colors.

But when little Dolly wears the coat to school, she is bullied by mean girls in class who trash her for wearing rags. (The original coat is now on display in Parton's Chasing Rainbows Museum at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.)

The movie is based on Parton's remarkable upbringing and set in her birthplace in Tennessee's Great Smokey Mountains in 1955.

Described by NBC as "family-oriented and faith-based," the movie focuses on the tight-knit Parton family as they struggle to overcome tragedy and "discover the healing power of love, faith and a raggedy patchwork coat that helped make Dolly who she is today," according to the network.

NBC's deal with Parton includes a series of standalone TV movies based on Parton's songs, stories and life, and with Parton serving as a producer with her production partners, Sam Haskell of Magnolia Hill and Warner Bros.Television.

They will contain music but won't be musicals, and Parton will possibly appear in some.

Lind may be young but she has credits. She was most recently seen as Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig's daughter in A Deadly Adoption, the Lifetime movie parody. She also had roles in Showtime's Masters of Sex and Amazon's Transparent.
