Does the unboxing experience matter to you?

I think I just confirmed that I don’t care about it because I just received my first Hermes package and I think I was a little annoyed with having to untie the ribbon lol. No pics or anything. I was just concerned with rather or not the shoes fit.

I also just opened my Chanel black mini and was annoyed by the ribbon again lol. Maybe I’m just irritable today.

Curious how people feel about the unboxing experience. Does it matter to you? Does it not matter to you?

I have to admit I love it when a designer/design house/boutique (brick and mortar or online) makes the unboxing something special. It doesn't make me look forward to owning the bag more, but it does make me look forward to getting the bag more if I know the unboxing it will be an event. (Knowing from personal experience or being told by others.) On a practical level careful packing can reduce the chance of damage during shipping. And my cats love if there is a ribbon involved, since it immediately becomes their new play toy.

It makes me feel like the sender is more concerned with details and the customer experience than just speed and how many bags they can get out that day. It makes me feel like a valued customer, rather than just a number. It also makes me feel as if they acknowledge and appreciate the large amount of my hard earned money I've spent on this purchase.

Here are the unboxings that have impressed me. Admittedly, many of my purchases have been from department stores or resale, so I don't know what the unboxing would have been if I'd bought directly from the designer.

Asprinal of London
Polene
Jimmy Choo
Net-a-Porter

It's not purses, but have to give a shout out to Tiffany & Co., and the little blue boxes and bags and lovely white ribbon.

So, what designers/boutiques give good unboxing? :graucho: And any that give really bad unboxing? :blah:

For some items (RTW / suiting /dresses) buying directly from the manufacturers means you get the complete packaging (branded hanger and garment bag). Most retailers simply use their own store branded ones for all their items.

Buying direct sometimes leads to a better long term experience (handwritten Christmas cards, private shopping events, etc...)

Honestly luxury bags have pretty horrible packaging but then again it makes sense since you shouldn’t be storing them longterm within a box!

This is a great thread! I love when a company pays attention to the details and makes a purchase special. The unwrapping is part of the experience, and elevates the joy for me. Brands I’ve purchased from with lovely packaging include...Louis Vuitton, Hermes (scarves, twillys), Ferragamo, Aspinal of London, Tiffanys, Forzieri, Reebonz....i keep a lot of the boxes and ribbon and use them around the house, and I’ve been in selling mode for awhile so any nice boxes, ribbon, or packing materials are used on bags i sell and never go into the trash. I wrap the bags i sell with ribbon, stickers, washi tape, etc so that the buyer experiences a special unwrapping.

I love that you do that for your Buyer when you sell a bag! So thoughtful! And would definitely make it feel less like getting a used bag to have it arrive in beautiful packaging.

Ditto on the H experience... they packed my Funk hat in a paper bag because they were out of boxes due to the Christmas sales rush. It is especially annoying as a proper box can help preserve the shape over time.

On a side note:
Brands that use lacquered boxes as part of their packaging really stand out in the world of paper boxes and bags.
Oooh who uses lacquered boxes? That would indeed be lovely!

I've ordered expensive dresses online from stores & they came crumpled in a broken box, out of the plastic- never mind tissue paper. These were delicate dresses & I'm lucky they weren't damaged. Yes I was quite annoyed tbh.

On the other hand, I sent an order for some items to a friend & it came wrapped in tissue paper in a box and yes it looked a lot nicer .

Watch and pen brands use them most often. (Breguet, Montblanc, Patek Philippe, St. Dupont, etc...)

Yes and no. When I was new to buying designer bags, I only bought new items because I wanted to get the full boutique and unboxing experience. After a decade, I prefer going the preloved but great condition route, which usually means no box, shopping bag etc.

Last year when my hubby got me my Gucci bag (and my first Gucci, besides a pair of sunnies and the famous GG belt) I got to enjoy the unboxing experience. I guess it can be nice sometimes (especially with a new brand), but generally speaking the novelty's worn off.

I never gave it too much thought until the day I brought home a Gucci bag directly from the Gucci boutique and it was literally just thrown into a Gucci box (luckily in a dustbag), no packaging, tissue paper, ribbon, etc.. that's when I realized how appreciative I was for Chanel, Hermes, YSL, Cartier, VCA, Dior, etc, even LV, for their attention to detail. I keep all the packaging because I intend to use it if I ever was to sell something down the road.. why not give the future purchaser a better experience? In my opinion, anything over a certain dollar amount should WOW you when you open it for the first time.
