Curious how people feel about the unboxing experience. Does it matter to you? Does it not matter to you?

I have to admit I love it when a designer/design house/boutique (brick and mortar or online) makes the unboxing something special. It doesn't make me look forward to owning the bag more, but it does make me look forward to getting the bag more if I know the unboxing it will be an event. (Knowing from personal experience or being told by others.) On a practical level careful packing can reduce the chance of damage during shipping. And my cats love if there is a ribbon involved, since it immediately becomes their new play toy.

It makes me feel like the sender is more concerned with details and the customer experience than just speed and how many bags they can get out that day. It makes me feel like a valued customer, rather than just a number. It also makes me feel as if they acknowledge and appreciate the large amount of my hard earned money I've spent on this purchase.

Here are the unboxings that have impressed me. Admittedly, many of my purchases have been from department stores or resale, so I don't know what the unboxing would have been if I'd bought directly from the designer.

Asprinal of London
Polene
Jimmy Choo
Net-a-Porter

It's not purses, but have to give a shout out to Tiffany & Co., and the little blue boxes and bags and lovely white ribbon.

So, what designers/boutiques give good unboxing? :graucho: And any that give really bad unboxing? :blah:

It depends on the item and brand for me. I love H’s holiday wrap, Petit h tags, and special packaging like for their nano scarf or Valentine’s heart items. It’s also how I keep my scarves. For SLGs, scarf rings, or fashion jewelry, though, it really doesn’t matter me. For LV, packaging doesn’t matter to me for them either. I’ll tend to want a box/wrapping if I’m new to a brand, but if they don’t it’s no big deal.

I do love jewelry packaging, like VCA, Tiffany, Chopard, and Bulgari. Bulgari’s has to be one of my favorites. For less expensive lines, Monica Vinader’s packaging stands out to me as well as Jet Set Candy. They’re both lovely for gifting.

That makes a lot of sense. Special holiday packaging would be a lovely extra. And Bulgari's packaging... Looks extraordinary! So far haven't found a style of theirs I think is worth the price... But I would love to own at least one Bulgari piece, when I find the right one.

I have come to realize that yes, it does matter. I am actually returning a bag that I just purchased because it isn't my style, but the bag was literally in its dustbag in the box that they shipped it. No bubble wrap or any type of cushion. And to top it off Fedex was rough with my box and it was busted! The bag could've been damaged. That was so disappointing but I am returning it so no loss.

I have noticed purchases from department stores were kind of lack luster for me. I bought a bag from Saks and they at least put the bag in a separate box in its dustbag but I still can't help but wonder if I should've purchased from their website directly.

I love Polene's packaging. It was quite exciting to open.

I have only ordered from Fashionphile twice but I like their packaging.

Furlas packaging was super cute but I threw out the package it came in.

Never yet seen department store packaging that was above 'sufficient'. Lack luster is a perfect description. As long as the item inside wasn't damaged during shipping... Like you say, these purses at least need bubble wrap to protect them! I have one arriving from Saks tomorrow. (fingers crossed)

Yeah, Polene packaging...

I forget most unboxing experiences after a while as they are unremarkable after the excitement of waiting for my bag to get here. If the box is sturdy (like Net-A-Porter's) I use it to store my new bag and repurpose the wrapping papers as stuffing.

The unboxing only becomes something to remember when combined with excellent customer service with SAs at the store or via email which established a relationship at some level. I like the handwritten notes and the odd little gift knowing that they came from someone who was attentive to my preferences and helped me choose something that was right for me. The whole experience made unboxing my Moynat bag when it arrived so exceptional.

Buying for myself, no - the unboxing didn’t matter. I prefer the store to just keep the packaging and boxes and ribbons because those all just end up in recycling or trash within the hour. As long as the bag is in good shape, sufficient packaging is all I ask. The unboxing isn’t a highlight for me, though I have enjoyed posting reveal threads on TPF in the past. Less so now; I just want my item.

Buying for someone else, yes - the packaging and presentation matters.

NAP
Reebonz
Mulberry
gorgeous package just adds the joy of getting the item i want.
I will not pay extra for this, i am price driven, and i usually opt for less fancy package from 'care for environment' point of view (Matches has a choice, for example), but if i order when this is included by default, i will have a few more moments of excitment :yahoo:
i try to re-use the boxes of NAP, or Reebonz, they are sturdy and handy for storage, all other bits and pieces go to the bin.

agree with @JenJBS and I really do feel that the unboxing process makes the whole experience of getting and owning the bag/SLG more luxurious and special.

personally i like Aspinal of London and Mulberry. For Mulberry, I like the winter packaging - this is why when I buy Mulberry I wait until I know they are using their green paper bags as opposed to the usual grey bags.

I also like to reuse the boxes; and totally agree about not paying extra for the packaging - it needs to be included by default.

I'll keep this in mind if I decide to get a Mulberry! Thanks! Getting my Asprinal of London bag yesterday is what inspired this post.

It is nice, but not neccessary for me. I actually prefer a simple box or a dust bag. Actually I also don't really need the box...

I always have a bad conscience about what to do with the nice packaging. Throwing it away seem like a waste, but I also won't use it. So unfortunately all those boxes are collecting dust in my junk room... Therefore, I prefer not to much wrapping...
