A few years ago I went into AF and they asked me if I would want to work there, I was only 17 so they were like: "Okay make sure you come in when you're 18 so you can work here! We'd love to have you, etc. etc."

Every time I went in there until I was 18 they would bug me about it, then I finally decided to go in like the day after my birthday. I only worked Sunday nights, because I had another job. I only did it for the discount...only 30% though.

I only made $5.75 an hour, and so did all of the other employees besides the managers.

You have to wear flip flops and clothes that at least "resemble" the AF look, as long as their aren't any logos from another company on them obviously.

It was a wicked boring job, cause all I did was stand in the front and greet people n stuff. It made my back hurt a lot, cause you aren't allowed to sit down, and cause of the stupid flip flops and hard floor.

But yea, that's my two cents! lol

PS: I worked there for only 6 months, then I became a waitress and made TONS more money. I'm still at the restaurant. Restaurants have flexible hours too!! ;)

1 week ago, i went into AF with a friend to purchase a gift certificate for my younger brother, who is in college. this was the FIRST time i ever stepped into the store. while i was there, i was approached by their scout and their manager, who asked me for my # and asked me to work there. i was hesitant bc im in law school so i do not have much time. they told me that it would be FINE and i can even just go in once a month.

i admit, i was taken by the "once a month" statement...i think i have time once a month to work there....afterall, it is in the mall!! i would love to make extra money and be near the mall...hahaha :p :p ....and, not to mention, my little brother is extremly happy about the prospect of me working there bc i can give him discounts...;)

anyhow, i went in for a group interview today (the manager called me ) and
the manager seemed really nice and was accomdating to me bc i told her i have limited time since i am a model so sometimes i cant come in bc i have go sees..etc..she was super sweet and assured me its fine...so..im tempted!!!

i am wondering if anyone here ever worked there, and what did u think of it? did u enjoy it? what did u have to do? do they make u wear their clothes? this is a big deal to me bc i am NOT AN AF STYLE GAL!! i wear catherine maladrino dresses, prada boots, and carry chanel purses...i dont think i resmble the AF look at all!! i think i would die if they asked me to wear cropped denim with flip flops!!! also, how was the pay? we didnt discuss pay today at all..

thanks in advance!!

Pass with a thank you. This isn't for you.

i am wondering if anyone here ever worked there- i worked there for seasonal employment last year.
and what did u think of it?- I liked it, there was minimal work/ effort involved, and I was actually told to be less customer service oriented.
did u enjoy it? - overall I did because, I was working with friends from High School
what did u have to do? - basically fold clothes, stand around, talk to my coworkers
do they make u wear their clothes?- yep, they were kinda strict on that ex. I would wear a pair of Hco flip flops (same company though) and I had to change! Ridiculous, maybe only my store was crazy but you do have to wear their clothes.

i found this thread through google...and I have a group interview with Abercrombie and Fitch tomorrow...just wondering what is their group interview like ? can anyone tell me what they usually ask ? and also this is for a store located in a mall..so what would the pay be ?

Thanks!

I work at A&F!

The group interview is based on questions, what's diversity & ect. But your group interview is basically based on your looks & your personality.

I can't stand shopping there because it's the crappy music is so loud, it's way too dark, and it smells like their cheap cologne.

Although from what I can tell, it's a lot more relaxed than working at Express. I worked there for 2 weeks before quitting. Every 3 hours we HAD to have people buy a certain amount of things to reach quota. We needed to make sure everyone bought 3 things. Making people sign up for the credit card was highly encouraged. Girls had to wear heels/ballet slippers (no flip flops). For $8, it was f'ing stressful. I would rather have gone back to waiting tables.

I forgot to mention this, if you going to the group interview try to dress key look. Wear dark skinnys with layered tops. Try to wear minimum amount of makeup, and keep your hair down is a must!. To be honest working for the company is crazy, and fun. I hope you get hired!

spoiledkiwi- I wasnt trashing everyone who works there. Its pretty much understood that that store isnt geared towards professionals. Everyone there is a kid ie. 18yrs old. Im sorry, but even your 18...you barely are a HS graduate, if that. Priorities are different. the OP said she was a LAW STUDENT. I would never jeperodize my career for the sake of working for a place like a&f. They are already surrounded by controversy for there hedious catalogs. Potential employers DO look at your job history and im sure it would cross someones mind why a 23 yr old professional is working at a&f, esp if shes trying to start a career in the legal field. I think that store needs to seriously consider working on there customer service, among other things.

I am 23 and went to school to become a legal administrative assistant. Although I could be considered a "professional" I currently work in retail as an assistant manager.( not at a&f however) I have my own personal reasons for this, but I disagree with your statement that people who work in this type of store are "kids" and aren't "professional" Honestly it takes a lot to work in a store like this.. I don't see how this would jeoprodize anyone's future career because they worked in such a store while they were a student ( I wasn't aware that being a student anything denotes being professional) to earn extra money.

I worked there in high school. Co-workers were the worst part because no one wanted to do anything in life, and half of them were in community college just so they could be close to home to party with drunk high school girls. The girls can be very *****y, not only to other employees, but to customers as well, especially if the customer isn't what they consider attractive. There was also a small amount of "hazing" between some female employees at the stores I worked at, but I have heard about that at other stores as well. The reason the hours are so "flexible" is because they have so many people on the payroll - it's often hard to get extra hours even if you want to. It's not worth it because you'll be working so few hours. The turnover rate for "managers" is high, as well as for "models"/brand reps. It's actually a really boring place to work.

I hardly even shop there anymore, and I still get asked at pretty much every store I visit if I want to work there.

I also don't put my work experience there on my resume, especially since they now call it being a "model" instead of a brand rep.

Pay will be minimum wage. The group interviews are a joke. They ask you about what kind of music you like and things to see if you fit the "lifestyle" of the brand - not really anything relevant to your actual skills or job experience. As long as you are dressed in a style similar to that of A&F, you will probably get hired.

You're also strongly suggested to wear clothes that fit within the "theme" they are pushing (ie whatever the mannequins are wearing). You CAN wear other brands but no one i worked with ever did. If you did you were put either in the back stockroom or in some sh**y back corner. I felt like it depended on how much you fit the abercrombie look reflected what you do.

they tell employees that they don't have to wear a&f clothing (but they actually strongly encourage wearing it) because if they said you had to it is considered a uniform and then the company has to pay for the clothing... a&f actually got sued a few years ago because they used to say that employees had to wear a&f clothing.

Um, I think a key thing to note here is that it doesn't have to go on your resume.

I was going to point that out also, it doesn't have to go on a resume. But my whole point is, even if it did go on there I don't see how that would make anyone think "gee this person isn't a professional because I see that while they were a student they worked retail"

thanks to everyone who replied to this thread! i was not aware that this old thread was revived..hehe..i am glad that my question has been able to provide some answers (thanks to tPFers) for others who might be in my position last year.

Anyhow, just to update, I never ended up working at Abercrombie. While it might have been a good experience, I was way too busy w/ law school, and I spent my summers working for firms. I am only one person so I really could not do it all. Thanks to everyone who responded!

Amen to that! I get a splitting headache whenever I'm in there from the music, and you can smell their gross cologne even just walking by the entrance b/c they spray it in the air like it's room spray and also spray all the clothes! I have actually seen them do this, I couldn't believe it! I have 1 T-shirt from there I got on sale and never really cared for their stuff, but I used to go in with my brother and cousin who were obsessed with AF. One time I actually had to leave the store while they were shopping and wait for them outside b/c I couldn't breathe from the cologne. And I don't have perfume allergies or anything like that, it was just that strong.

I think you made the right decision miss alice, AF really had nothing to offer you and I'm sure you had a better experience learning more about law and making connections through your internships. The only "benefit" appears to be the discount and you probably didn't want the clothes anyways!
