thank you mello_yello_jen, SPOILED kiwi, and sweetkandypie!

mello_yello_jen- i laughed when i read ur comment bc i know u post sometimes in the wardrobe thread as do i, and u probably have seen somr of the clothes i usu wear...heheh....btw, i LOVE all YOUR outfits, and u have a great figure!! :smile1::smile1:

i guess the fact that im already researching other forms of "acceptable footwear" is a red warning sign, huh? :roflmfao:

SPOILEDkiwi- thanks for all ur advice! ur really sweet! i think im going to wait and talk to the manager. in the meantime, im going to look for more "acceptable" footwear and see what i possible can get away with..lol...in all honesty, AnF is not my personal style but i dont think their clothes are ugly neither. its casual and i do think it looks good..i just never though I particularly looked good in it...hehe...but then again, wearing their clothes probably can make me look younger, and thats a good thing, since im feeling old already! hahaa...

btw, i see that ur from long island? i grew up there, in nassau county!

I worked there for about 2 years as well..this is probably about a year ago. IMO it wasn't the best retail option out there. I worked in a store in a mall so we got paid minimum wage. That's right, 5.15 an hour. Of course it would be alright if you just wanted to go in from time to time. I mainly worked to take advantage of the discount and to have something to do over winter break; plus i was also waitressing so I had real money coming in. You'll quickly find if you're looking to make money, you'll pretty much make nothing.

Employees get 30s on clothes unless they're on sale. There's no employee discount on sale items. At the beginning of each season changeover you get 3 50s 50% off of 3 items limited to 2 tops and 1 bottom. They don't tell you specifically what you can use your 50s on but there is stuff that's strongly suggested.

You're also strongly suggested to wear clothes that fit within the "theme" they are pushing (ie whatever the mannequins are wearing). You CAN wear other brands but no one i worked with ever did. If you did you were put either in the back stockroom or in some sh**y back corner. I felt like it depended on how much you fit the abercrombie look reflected what you do.

I am premed, and I remember one night my manager told me I needed to "re-evaluate my priorities and make A&F a TOP priority" because I had asked to leave early from a "let's all get to know one another meeting" the night before an exam.

spoiledkiwi- I wasnt trashing everyone who works there. Its pretty much understood that that store isnt geared towards professionals. Everyone there is a kid ie. 18yrs old. Im sorry, but even your 18...you barely are a HS graduate, if that. Priorities are different. the OP said she was a LAW STUDENT. I would never jeperodize my career for the sake of working for a place like a&f. They are already surrounded by controversy for there hedious catalogs. Potential employers DO look at your job history and im sure it would cross someones mind why a 23 yr old professional is working at a&f, esp if shes trying to start a career in the legal field. I think that store needs to seriously consider working on there customer service, among other things.

i used to work for hollister, which is owned by A+F and is run the same, and i have tons of friends who work at A+F. honestly, i really really hated working there. it just wasn't for me. the girls were catty and i found them to be superficial. and A+F and hollister just isnt consistent with my style. i would stick out so much if i wore what i really wore on normal days to work. i felt like i was wearing a uniform there.

according to their 'look policy' it's not necessary at all to buy their clothes but it must look like your work there---i.e. you have to look like you're wearing clothes that is similar to their style. and yep, no heels or they don't really like closed toe shoes unless they're flats or something. but mostly everyone wears flip flops, especially rainbows.

pay is minimum wage and the discount is 30%, 50% at the beginning of each new season limited to certain items. and the work schedule is very flexible because you choose your own availability.

honestly, i think you could find a much better job with a better environment as well. :)

judging from all the negative responses, i see every store is drastically different. The 2 stores in NYC are not located in malls, and have older customers. I noticed you're also in NYC MissAlice. The one I work at is South Street Seaport. I've also heard good things about the fifth avenue store too. Because of where it's located, the clientele is a bit different from the "teeny bopper" mall stores everyone's talking about. It's mostly european tourists and people in their 20's. The majority of employees there are models, and it's the most selective AF when it comes to hiring. Seaport is a bit more laid back and is only 2 floors, so it isn't as busy as fifth ave which is 4 floors. It's also located near Bergdorfs, Saks, LV, Chanel, etc. so you can get some good shopping in after work.

Based on your profile, working at A&F isn't is worth your time and lifestyle. Even at $9 for one day (8 hours) a month, that's only $72 pre-tax, plus you have to wear their clothes which means you have to buy a new A&F wardrobe just for the job. ($72 is like 2-4 items with the discount....) So you'll end up spending more money on clothes you don't even want if you do accept the job. So, rationally, it doesn't make sense financially.

Now, if you want the "prestige" and image of working at A&F (they have the reputation of only hiring very attractive people), then you may want to think about it (afterall even a new A&F wardrobe doesn't cost that much money)....

i dont think i will work at AnF bc its "prestigious"..lol.:smile1:..good looking retail employees is "prestigious?" i dont know.. :confused1: i never thought of it like that..hehe...its an intersting point though...

im a model and i have been modeling for years...i dont think working at AnF will do anything for me in terms of "prestige." working at AnF would just be something "fun" to do once a month max...but i work with some of the most famous models in the world already..AnF employees dont really mean much to me.

with that said, i start law school again tomorrow...sigh...i doubt i will have any time to even work at AnF...

I personally don't find working at A&F "prestigious," that's why I put it in quotes.... But some people definitely think that....

You could probably work at Barneys Co-op. You don't need as much work experience (or perhaps none at all). Attractive and fashionable people there....

Working in sales isn't fun. It's actually quite boring (high end stores) because most of the time the store is empty or a bit frazzled (mass market stores) when a lot of people are there.... I've never personally worked in sales but I shop a lot and have lots of SA friends who tell me these things....

I work at abercrombie and have been for the past 3 years (i'm in college, and this job fits right into my schedule. You have to wear flip flops, your hair can't be dyed certain colors (natural is what they prefer), toenails have to be polished limited to certain colors, and you have to wear their clothes. It's not a bad job, the pay sucks, but it's perfect if you're the lazy type to stand there and fold clothes, and chit chat with friends :p

Sorry for this comment, but I dont consider working at A&F presitigious. It was KNOWN that A&F hires attractive people and yes, I do agree, that there are definitely attractive ppl working at A&F, but NOT EVERYONE who works there are attractive! Of course, the people in A&F on 5th Ave are slightly more attractive than the one on Seaport due to the neighborhood. But, there are definitely some ppl there who are NOT attractive at all. I went to the 5th Ave one time around 7pm and there was a chubby/fat girl working behind the counter. I dont want to insult anybody, but I think ppl just work there for the "image" that they hire attractive ppl. Hence, working at A&F would boost their self-esteem and make them feel better. Also, I went to the one at Seaport one day, a girl behind the cashier wore SOO much makeup to conceal her acne-proned skin. It was pretty horrifying. But, I guess her face didnt matter, since she wore a push-up bra and her chest was literally hanging out.

Of course, everyone has heard of Abercrombie being "racist" and all and it's definitely obvious that they do hire a diversity of people now, especially Asians. And, not trying to insult Asian ppl (I'm one myself), but the people at A&F are just not "attractive" anymore. Of course, the half-naked guy standing in front of the store is absolutely gorgeous and other modelesque girls, but there's only a few of them. There are some "pretty" Asian people working there, but more normal than WOW.

Is it me or does some SA in A&F lack a brain? I once asked a SA to show me where I can find their outerwear section for a XMAS gift, he literally paused for a good few sec to answer my question. And, also the girls have this kind of ditzy accent. It gets annoying at times.

So, in conclusion (sorry for this long entry), I think you shouldnt work at A&F. I was approached almost everytime I step foot into the one at 5th Ave, and it definitely gets annoying. They try to brainwash you by saying they have "great benefits", like health insurance, discounts on clothing, and you get like 2 sweaters and a pair of jeans for free PER SEASON. (I'm not sure whether or not it's 2 sweaters or 3!), but its definitely a pair of jeans, sweater for free per season and discount. Of course, if you want to work part-time, I dont think you'll get health insurance.

I'm thinking about getting a job at Abercrombie when I go to school next year .. I've always been worried they won't find me "attractive" enough, I'm tall and not superthin - all of my Abercrombie clothes are L sizes and I have a hard time finding jeans there that are long enough. But seriously, I have known people that work there and love it. I can see myself doing it - I just love going in there, the ambience is very me (and I am eighteen, not twenty-three, of course) but the hours can't be beat.

Is there a lot of competition?
It seems like a lot of young people would want to work there.
