Does anyone *want* to wear out their bags?

I tend to get a new bag and wear it every day until I'm ready for a new one... and I usually only by 1-2 bags in a year, then I have an off year (two off years when I was a broke grad student) where I don't buy anything. So my bags tend to get heavy usage, but they've fortunately worn well. I don't baby them to the extreme, but they're also not battered or abused lol Because I don't rotate my bags often, I have a smaller collection (5 designer bags, 1 designer cross body, and a few clutches), but I truly love every bag that I own.

I hate when my items start to look too worn.....it makes me stop using it and "saving it" for a special day. Some days I wish I could just enjoy and let my things be worn.

Really good question!! I've wondered the same thing. I have found bags I adore and want to last forever, so I keep them safe and use them sparingly. But I want bags that I can use daily and can take a beating. So I try to find one everyday bag that will last a couple years and rotate the others on special occasions.

There are some I wouldn't mind seeing wear on it. Particularly the ones that patina well, such as the LV monogram, Mulberry and Hermes leathers.

But there are some I would like to keep looking new, such as my LV leather bags and my Chanel items.

I get very attached to my favorite things. When I buy something new, and it's obvious that item is becoming a favorite, I buy multiples, with bags or shoes I might buy different colors, but not always. I found a pair of sandels about 5 or 6 years ago that fit perfectly, I could wear with anything, and were so comfortable, within 6 mos., I had 8 pairs, 4 are the same color, 1 of those I totally wore out, and I moved on to the next pair. They weren't expensive shoes, I just love them. I think my supply will last longer than me.
Realized I had been carrying my PS1 everyday for about a year. Thought I should switch it up a bit, didn't last long, except for a few dressy occasions. Back to my PS1 again, and purchased 2 more, before the style I like so much disappears.
I like to prolong the inevitable worn-out phase as long as possible.

I bought my first PS1 back in April and then promptly bought 2 more. I had to force myself out of it into another bag last week since I try not to carry a bag for longer than a month or two straight.

I want to wear out my bags but at the same time keep them pristine. For example, I want a perfect patina on my LV monogram bags so they look well used but I'm often too worried about weather or sticky fingers to use my bags enough to get that patina. So pointless to worry about bags, I know...maybe someday I'll be a little more relaxed about them.

Good question. I've wondered if anyone on TPF actually wears a bag until it dies because there are so many threads about reselling. Maybe because good quality bags last longer so people get tired of them before they wear out? Also how much wear is acceptable before a bag is retired? Looking used vs worn out.

I don't think I could do it. I have a bag that the edgepaint started cracking, and I need to find dark grey edgepaint to fix it. Have I done it? Nooooo, put on the back burner and the bag sits unused because I am afraid it will get worse. But I won't get rid of that bag, because I still really like it. I usually get tired of styles and then resell them to friends, colleagues, on ebay, or give them to my mom/daughter. I only have a handful of ones that I just cannot part with out of my collection.

I just think it is strange that we tell ourselves, me included, that we need to buy more expensive bags because they last forever then get tired of them because they last forever. . It helps me to box some away for a while, assign others specific uses, and donate bags only when I'm sure I won't wear them again. If resale was better where I live I might rehome some of my lesser used bags, but the low return shows me I still value those bags more than the little $ I would get. Some of my work bags are showing wear enough it won't be long before I consider them "worn out" but they have been work horses long enough to have earned it.

I wear out designer shoes but won't do it to bags. For some reason I think worn-out bags look awful and can't bring myself to wear them out. But shoes I guess are less noticeable and I'll wear it out happily. But I tend to do this for a few pairs, and most of my other designer shoes get rotated and look great 10 years later.

So does that mean you sell them when they start looking worn or do you give them away when you won't wear them anymore? Or do you throw them away as they are really worn out?
