Does anyone else wish that fur coats would come back in style

They seem to regularly go in and out of style depending on what what high fashion is trying to make us buy.

In the mid-90s my mother was worried about wearing hers (mink) but by the mid-00s they were 'everywhere' (London, Cote d'Azur). It probably helped that Russians and former Eastern Europeans also were.

If you want to wear fur and you already have one, it's better for you, the planet and the coat/jacket if you wear it. I have to admit I haven't worn most of mine this year, but then I've hardy been anywhere. Furs need an airing as much as cold storage in the Summer (if it gets hot where you are). The good news is when there are fewer people wearing fur altogether, others presume that people who are are wearing real are wearing faux. Once you have a coat (or 2) you can tell the difference easily, even without touching, but IME most people cannot.

It's the usually green-washing marketing. I notice fauxs and padded coats often have descriptions like 'eco' and 'animal-friendly'. Plastic is obviously not ecologically sound (even recycled/recyclable) and therefore not animal or human friendly either. None of the terms including sustainable are legally definable.

Once people have enough of matted faux-fur mats and padded plastics they'll try to sell us real furs agin.

Sheepskins are a good option for those that don't like the thought of non-food reared skins.

Lets post pics of furs. I just purchased a fur stole from Neiman Marcus. Its so soft.....
We have an active fur thread. There are also several other separate threads where we used to be active (sable, mink, etc). https://forum.purseblog.com/threads/post-your-fur-items.924588/

I’m in Canada and I wear fur. My mom wore fur, and I know many people that still wear fur. It’s warm! And just like @papertiger wrote, it’s better for the environment than plastic coats, especially if they are being handed down generationally. My mom gave me one of her blonde fox coats from the 70s, it’s one of the most amazing things. She still wears her other ones though
I couldn’t care less if the shivering judgemental people give me the side eye when they are wearing leather and sweatshop made plastics sipping coffees from questionable sources in styrofoam cups.
Really though, I’ve never had any unpleasant reactions from wearing fur, just people wanting to feel it

This. Thank you for saying that.

I inherited a Lynx jacket from my mother-in-law, only after about 5 years of unsuccessfully trying to sell it (I didn't want to give it away at a super low price like most second-hand fur prices), so I decided to try it out this season. I actually love it, and now wear it anytime or with anything including a baseball cap. It gets looks from people around the city and I can't figure out if they're disapproving looks, but I am ready with an argument similar to what you said. I'm not really pro- or anti-fur, I just happen to have acquired a vintage heirloom fur coat and I've decided to make use of it rather than let it sit there and go to waste.

It it's thrifted, inherited or otherwise used after it has had already a long fashion life, I say okay, I mean the animal has been killed already for a long while before we got to be more conscious about it.

As a new fashion to come back and being produced with new animals being killed for it, is a big NO for me.
This is exactly how I feel. This goes for any animal product, really. I'd rather have a preloved/thrifted/inherited item that's stood the test of time than to buy brand new "eco-friendly" faux alternatives for the sake of being eco-conscious.

Yeah, definitely depends upon where you live. I've read they're tres chic in Iceland. I live in the Great White North and no one wears furs here, even though temps often dip below 0 in the evening this time of year, but I think it's because fashion has grown so casual. No one dresses up around here, not even to go to the opera or fancy restaurants. It's quite sad really. :confused1:
I just had a similar conversation with someone, it's very sad how no one is dressing up

I inherited my mom’s mink coat which is a medium hip length and has a beautiful embroidered silk lining. Sadly I don’t think she wore it much herself and I’m not comfortable wearing it out-I dress casually and have nowhere to wear it to and plus, I get nervous that people may think I’m either OTT or not mindful of animal rights. I know I shouldn’t care what others think but it just continues to sit in my closet. I do love the look and feel of fur-I have a Yves Salomon and a shearling from several years ago which I wore a lot in the past but have worn less this year. I just got a CG parka and I chose one without a fur collar on purpose. Hopefully one day I’ll have enough courage to wear that mink out!

Okay as I mentioned before in an earlier post of mine back in Christmas 1986 my mom got a full-length Golden Island fox fur coat and absolutely loved it. I remember that for the rest of the 1980s and the 1990s and the early 2000s she would wear it all the time. Now fur coats are no longer in style and aren't really politically correct. I was born in 1975 and grew up in Chicago during the 1980s and a fur coat was the most coveted thing a woman could own. I remember during the winter months back in 1984 and 1985 when I was 9 and 10 years old my mom had wanted a full-length fox fur coat like crazy. I remember her jaw-dropping whenever we saw a woman wearing a full-length fox fur coat. She would always ask them about their full-length fox fur coats and would even ask to try them on. I remember her nagging my dad like crazy for one and her making me and my brother stop in fur coat stores with her and there she would try them on. My poor dad had reached a boiling point back in Christmas 1985 when her sister got a full-length fox fur coat so the next Christmas he got her a full-length golden island fox fur coat and she absolutely loved it and during the winter from then on she would make it a point to wear it as much as possible so she would go to as many parties, museums, office functions, fancy restaurants, the opera, the theatre or the symphony for a chance to wear it. I remember I loved that coat as well and would always try it on during the winter months when she wasn't looking because she loved that coat more than life itself and wouldn't let anyone try it on but her. I remember telling her when she first got that coat that one day, I would want to own a coat like that, and luckily for me as a college graduation gift I had gotten one from my parents back in 1997. My parents got me a full-length silver fox fur coat and I would wear it out as much as possible at like fancy events for a 13-year period from like 1997-2010 once I realized that fur was no longer in style. I still have the coat just like my mom still has her coat we just both haven't worn them in over 10 years and we both wish that it was acceptable for us to wear them out. I know people have a lot of issues with fur when it comes to animal rights stuff, but people don't seem to care when people wear leather. I just love wearing fur it's so warm and soft and I love the way fox fur feels. It's nothing like any other coat.
I would love to see your silver fox coat! Here is mine.
