Doc, thank you for sharing your expertise in this thread! I am not very knowledgeable about Hermes leathers. I am now the proud owner of a preloved Kelly bag that has some cracking along the top. The area where the handle hardware affixes the bag is also a bit stressed but not unsightly. It is otherwise fairly sound, with good corners and no major scratches or blemishes. Is there anything that can be done about the cracks, both to fill them or reduce their appearance, and to prevent more of them?

Hi there, It looks like someone has already done some color work to help mask some wear or color loss.
Because these cracks are on bends and areas off movement and flexing its unlikely a leather filler will stay put. I say a crack stabilizer type product might help but , a deep conditioning to help the internal fibers would be the best option at this point.
Congratulations on getting your Vintage Kelly treasure!
All the best,doc

Thanks, Doc. I am planning to purchase the restoring spa kit and will give her a good cleaning and conditioning. It gives me joy to look at her!

Dear Doc - is Amazonia, even if in good shape, a lost cause? I am strangely drawn to this odd material and have one bag - a Trim 31 with orange Clemence leather trim. It’s in great shape and I’m conditioning the material once a month, but will it eventually dry out? There are so many handsome bags in Amazonia .... but I’m scared I will regret purchasing. Would love your opinion. Thank you!

I’m not an expert on Amazonia conditioning it is a good thing to keep it from drying out.
However,I would be careful not to use oily or waxy type conditioners as they can break down the Amazonia material.
Some conditioner made for vinyl or rubber would be a better option.
If your Amazonia is in good shape and you are taking care of it I say enjoy your bag and it’s a lucky bag to have been found by you.
All the best doc

Hi Doc,
How are you?
Long time, no see. Hope all is well
I wanted to ask your opinion about a pair of Soya gloves that are almost 1 year old and have been used maybe 3 times and haven’t been used since. I’ve kept them in the original box and now pulled them out to wear them again and realized one of the locks is slightly tarnished (especially on the grooves). I smelled the opening of the glove and it has a faint smell of what I think is mould? mildew? (I’m not sure which one smells). No spots on the lambskin outside. I can’t see what’s going on inside because it’s lined in cashmere.

What do you think happened, can it be fix and how can prevent this from happening again?

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi there,
Thank you I am well .
I'd let them air out and see how they are in a few days
I'd clean the tarnish off the hardware with a tarnish removing cloth
and i'd make sure I stored the gloves with moisture absorbing sachet
All the best doc

Hi Doc, thank you so much for these threads. I just purchased this Pan clutch and the leather along the fold is cracking. I’m very new to leather care so I apologize if this is a very easy question, but do you think this could be repaired? I may try to return it if not, as the photos didn’t show this amount of cracking.

Hi there
The short answer is no. You can maybe make those cracks look a bit better and possibly stabilize them a bit. However, cracks on a bend or any area which has high stress are difficult at best to fill and fix. If you paid top dollar I’d think about returning it. However if the cRacks are not too deep and the bag was relatively inexpensive and the rest of the clutch looks ok it might be worth doing some TLC to make it work for you ?
Good luck [emoji256] doc

Thank you so much! I paid $500 which I know is not a ton for H but it was my first high-end purchase and seems like I’d be better served to get the money back if I can and save up for the next find.

Well $500 is still good money , go with your instincts :)

Thanks for the reply, doc.
Airing them out is already working. I’ll look for the tarnish removing cloths and moisture absorbing sachets next.
Would you store them back in the Hermès box?

Hi again, Air out the box as well if it smells musty ; if it’s still musty smelling after airing then I’d say no don’t use the box .
All the best, doc
