I love these options!Hello there,
Well you have a very cool grande dame there and she’s been allowed to dry out to the extreme. When leather gets to this point it’s called Dry-rot, this means the leather has the become so dry and inflexible and brittle that it tears like cardboard. It appears to be what’s happened in this case. It looks like you the leather has torn away from the stitches and part of the leather is still attached to the stitches correct? Normally a repair would require restricting though the original needle holes but in this case the holes are ripped through. The problem here is that when the leather has gotten to this stage it doesn’t usually hold repair stitches either . Think about sewing cardboard ... the thread cuts through the cardboard (when you pull them tight ).
Sorry to say but I don’t have transformative restoration advice for this bag.its not a matter of just conditioning and having the leather come back to supple and healthy condition although you can try.
1) you can try a sub patching system from the interior which won’t be neat looking and probably won’t be all that strong either.
2) Don’t muck with it and sell the bag as is as an antique recoup some of your loss and invest in a bag which can be used .
3) condition it as much as possible and then don’t over load ( lip stick keys and a mini wallet) and carry it as a chic beater Kelly like the olsen twins do until it falls apart ?
4) sell it to an interior designer or a window dysplay company or photography studio as a prop?
5) make it in to a planter ?
Good luck sincerely, doc

I dont expect inside to be brand new but do you think the leather type is easy /ok to fix/clean up? Or will it reflect on the outside?https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/222979653158
Ill try to private message you too.
Is it worth buying, trying to salvage?

I am not afraid to get my hands dirty with saddle soap, leather cleaner, and conditioner. [emoji4]
Hi there Justin,Hi Doc!
I recently purchased a vintage Herbag and am in need of some advice regarding the leather pieces. There is some soiling and cracking. Can anything be done to help remedy these issues?
Please see attached pictures.
Thank you!
Justin

Hey there. I'm not Doc, she's brilliant! But what I see, just in case you don't hear back, but to me the bag looks recolored. If you look at the first close up of the toggle thing in the front, to the left of the toggle, lighter color showing through. Plus the stamp is completely one color, another thing that makes me think it's been recolored. Plus you can see strange color patterns on the front, like it's not solidly colored. Just my opinion but if the paint is chipping between the handle and toggle, that might be the start of some big issues. Doc has a much better eye than I do so wait for her to reply...hi docride, what do you think of the condition of this boxcalf birkin? attached are pictures of the corners that seller sent. corners does look very dry right?

Hi there,
This bag has a lot more problems than some dry corners. I agree this bag has been completely painted, with gosh knows what. No telling whats under that paint... if its cheap enough maybe take a chance and get it t a professional to try and save it.
Good luck,doc
Hello Doc,
I've learned so much from reading your thread (especially about what to look for in vintage box leather). I'm still searching for a vintage BBK and your threads have been very helpful. In the meantime, I've been eyeing this CdC Kelly and would like your expert opinion and guidance.

1. What do you think about the grazing? I'm wondering if this bag would benefit from new grazing throughout.
Docride Answer > grazing ? You mean reburnishing the edges ? Sure that would make it look nicer.
2. What do you think about the health of the leather?
Docride answer > I cant tell from these photos
Does chevre leather dry out like box leathers?
Docride answer > sure
If so, what are some of the signs of chevre drying out?
Docride answer > cracking especially round stitch holes
I'm curious also if this beautiful sheen I see in the photos is typical of the chevre leather. I see lots of deliciously bright colored chevre leathers here but I'm not sure if I have run into a black with this type of sheen.
Docride answer > yes Hermes chèvre typically has a sheen
3. The seller kindly disclosed that there is a scratch/dent in the right corner of this bag. If I buy this bag, is there anything I can do to minimize the look of this scratch/dent mark? What should one do going forward to make sure there is no further damage caused by this scratch?
Docride answer > I didn’t see this in the photos
So I can’t comment
Thank you so much for your time to share your expertise here and any wisdom you can impart. TIA!
