Do you travel with your H bag?

I also travel with my dog so I completely understand your dilemma! Here's what works for me - "baby" in the carrier on the floor..I put my handbag (35) in an H golf bag. It's sturdier than a Longchamp or a SportSac, although it is still soft sided. The handles do stick out of the top, but I cover them up so that they are nice and protected. Also, it has a nice wide strap so you can carry it over your shoulder. Voila! Little Misto and Birkin can travel together!

I have packed my Birkins and Kelly (not all on the same trip!) in my roller bag carryon. I stuffed it full of underwear, socks, jewelry, strapped it up, and padded it all around and through the handles with my clothes. Nothing gets squished, and you're not really losing any room inside the suitcase. Since I'm the only one handling it, I know everything will be in exactly the same position as when I packed it. Except when you travel internationally. The customs guy who opened my suitcase on the way home from Paris was impressed with how well packed my Kelly was inside the suitcase. Sadly, he did not do as good a job at repacking it...

Edit to add, I would never put my H bags in the overhead compartment in a soft sided bag. I've seen how the flight attendants and other passengers squash things up there.

Thank you both so much for your ideas!

salazac, that H golf bag sounds wonderful! It didn't get mashed up by other people's suitcases smushed in there? I have never seen a H golf bag, I will definitely check it out :hugs:

ouija board, that is the exact reason I don't feel comfortable packing my Birkin in anything that isn't a hard luggage piece-- other passengers are brutal! I have cringed so many times with chanel totes i packed in soft-sided LV luggage, so there is absolutely no chance I would do that with a B. When you open your suitcase, does yours have those two almost, ribs in the bottom? It seems like my Pegase 55 rolling bag stores the "handle tracks" within the bag-- so the inside lining at the bottom isn't flat. (that may be confusing to visualize) Do you have a better suitcase recommendation? Of course I want something that could fit the B and ideally a couple other things, maybe jewelry or a pair of CL's I don't feel comfy checking.

Mine does have the handle tracks, so I put t shirts between and on top of the tracks so that they don't rub. I usually have room to put another layer on top to pad against the lid, and I make sure to only put soft flat items like scarves in the pocket lining the lid. It's like a feat of engineering or game of Tetris to pack my Birkin, so it doesn't happen often!

I don't have any brand recommendations since mine is el cheapo. I'm guessing whatever you have is far better than mine!

LOL! Thank you for explaining further. You give me faith I can pull this off. I never would have thought to pad between the tracks, that sounds like a wonderful solution. I don't mind going to heroics! I went to heroics to find one, I am more than happy to go to heroics to make sure I don't damage it. :p

I know this may sound like an expensive idea, but for a domestic trip, consider shipping the Birkin, insured of course. I've done this on many occasions, and never had a problem. I'm just too anxious going through security manhandling, worrying about overhead bins, etc. The cost is usually between $100-$150 each way. Peace of mind is my solution.

Also there is a brand called ANTLER made in UK that has excellent soft side and hard side carry ons and briefcases----u can just pad around the handles. But now all of you have convinced me that I am crazy because I always use a large (35) Birkin as my handbag while travelling---sometimes I do stick it into a soft Lancel or a Sportsac or even an Hermes shopping bag. And I always travel with one of my Chanel or Judith Leiber evening bags---that goes in my carry on usually with one Kelly and overhead on air. However, most of my Europe travel is on trains and so there is sometimes more space. But here is a good laugh for all of you who worry too much---my latest trip from Paris to London, I travelled with my two dogs, my Birkin, my carryon containing 2 Chanel bags--1 evening and 1 day, a Kelly, a Judith Leiber Minauderie, my laptop and my fur coat and hat plus in the famous orange bag I had my new MASSAI Cut still pristine in its Hermes box and sleeper! And the only scratch or damage was to my aubergine colour nailpolish! So enjoy your trip and enjoy your Hermes!

i guess i was imagining a hard suitcase I could lay the birkin down in? But where it was structured and if people tried to smush the bag, the carry-on wouldn't bend? maybe this isn't realistic...

I haven't taken my B on flights yet but I've taken my 32 HAC and my Kellys in a carry on suitcase on long flights (USA to Asia). I've been using my Tumi Vapor to protect all my "should never be squished" items while on the overhead bin. It's been successful so far. Check out the Tumi Vapor line. It's super light, great hard case protection, and looks really sharp too!

I think it's wonderful that you are able to use and enjoy your bags - I do the same :)

I generally travel with my kelly, but it depends on the trip... i.e. - it comes with me to London, Paris, Australia, Japan, but not to Cape Town or Rio. This is just my preference though, not a firm rule - others who may be from or more familiar with the latter cities could be comfortable with H bags there.

I'm taking my Massai to Rome and Capri...my first time in Rome and I'm a bit nervous about thievery(probably no worse than Spain or France, though, right?) but I figure it's a good travel bag since it has the strap extender and I can wear it messenger style toward the front. Plus, it's large enough to carry essentials on the plane.

Don't worry, a lot of ladies carry H bags in Rome and Capri:smile1:

I don't carry my birkins abroad if I don't know the place, but just because I'ma afraid I would get in crowded place where they could be scratched.

I do carry evening bags as Kelly pochette or Jige and I store them in the carry on luggage

I am glad that you enjoy yours all the time too! You love them so don't worry and enjoy because you do not know what tomorrow might bring!

I am not at all like my late mother who still had handbags, sweaters, and scarves in original wrappings/box/ribbons tied when she died. Plus sterling silver flatware, etc that only were used for VIP dinners.

I have long ago stopped looking for Mr Goodbar and I use her sterling silver daily.

As for having your handbag stolen or your wallet, your chances are probably the same in any major city around the world.

And I would not dream of going up to London without an Hermes handbag and a fur coat at this time of the year except for the Hermes and Haroods sales where they would be a burden.

I am more worried about something horrible happening to me or to whomever I am with than I am about my material possessions. Enjoy!
