Do you think the Gucci marmont bag is a "trend" ?

Me too! I keep wanting to get the mini one, either camera or shoulder bag. My mind is telling me no, but my heart wants it so badly! Just can’t justify it if I’m going to wear it for a couple of seasons.

I'm in the same boat. Want a Marmont flap, know I will use it, but worried about longevity as I have been burned before with trendy bags.

I have the medium marmont in rubin velvet. I might be biased but as the bag seems so luxurious (plush, stand-out velvet, satin, antique-gold hardware, leather), it looks like a classic to me. I'm not familiar with the bag in leather so I couldn't say how classic it looks in person but black is always a winner. And if the price continues to increase, it would certainly help the bags lifespan.
But I also think that Gucci having so many bags in the marmont line that do not look like classics could make the bag appear too trendy, as well as Gucci selling more affordable versions of the bag (the mini), which could potentially flood the market and lead to overexposure.

I think it is a trend. The Marmont line feels over-saturated and that usually means trendy and that people will tire of it. Social media and YouTube are downfalls of many nice bags these days. It is like you are tired of the bag before you even own it. I keep wanting to get one, but I know it will not last and I'm just being encouraged by hype. That, for me anyway, means it's too popular and not a good buy.

I was thinking of purchasing the velvet but in cobalt blue. How are you liking the velvet? I'm scared that it'll wear and tear easily because of the material. On top of that, I'm scared it'll go out of style... Not sure if I should go the safe route and go with the black leather :/

I've had my bag for almost a year now and the velvet has worn really well. A thin line of velvet around the buckle closure that you can only see when you open the flap is lighter (which may have partly came that way - the nature of velvet). I find the parts of the bag that need to be watched are the interior leather and satin. Either my keys, security pass or buckles on my wallet (to kind of mimic a small suitcase or horse riding something) has put about three faint scratches on the satin and one on the leather gucci tag. I'll upload a photo later tonight to show what I'm talking about. They're faint but I absolutely hate it as you want to keep things in as perfect condition as possible.

Awww thank you so much! Do you ever worry that the velvet marmont might go out of style? Or that it's too trendy? No purse has caught my attention in the past year, but when I went inside the Gucci store to try on the cobalt, my heart just sang and I wanted to purchase it the first time I wore it!

I don’t have a marmont bag, but overall I buy things that I like regardless of their popularity. For example, the Mulberry Alexa was very fashionable about 8 years ago, maybe even too fashionable, and I didn’t have it back then even though I loved the bag. In the last couple of years I’ve bought a few, because I still love the bag even though it’s not popular anymore. I think it’s a classic and even if it wasn’t, I still love and use my Lexies. I think the marmont is quite classic with its shape. The only thing I don’t like that much is the huge GG logo, but I love the quilting and the heart more than I dislike GG, so it’s also on my wishlist. [emoji4] And if I buy it, I’ll definitely use it years to come. It may be everywhere on instagram but irl I have seen it once so it’s not even overly popular where I live.

Apologies for the delayed reply, I've had a busy week. I took these photos this morning and they display the wear after a year of using the bag often (1-3 times a week). The velvet is wearing around the buckle closure (photo four) and the top of the flap is marked from the chain resting on the velvet as I mostly use the strap at it's longest, which means the strap will sit across the flap (photo one and five).
Photo two shows that the shape of the bag is pretty good. I've heard medium marmont's can get a triangle shape due to their size but from what I've heard about and experienced from the velvet marmont, I think it is able to keep its shape a better than the leather.
Image three shows the scratches I mentioned.
A downside is that the velvet collects lint like crazy and as I have explained, the velvet can mark, so the bag would wear faster than the leather. I'm glad I purchased my bag in velvet as I do really enjoy it.
I personally think if the bag is a trend, the velvet is less trendy and should have an extra year than the leather as it has much less exposure than the leather (I've seen people wearing the leather while I've yet to see people with the velvet, celebrities mostly have been photographed with the leather, etc.) and it's a bit more striking.
I hope I've been of some help!

I've learned that the simpler and more nondescript the style, material, and pattern (actually lack of pattern), the longer an item stays "in style." So they're my core, basic bags and I spend more money on them. Of course, Plain Jane bags aren't as exciting as the latest "it" bags so I purchase less expensive, trendier bags for fun.

I learned yrs ago that there is no such thing as "timeless" style. Everything looks dated eventually. Just look at family photos or yearbooks - yikes.

However, styles come and go.
And come back again.
Think Birkenstocks, Grace Kelly frame bags, 1960s hippy --> 2017 bohemian look . . . My great niece is begging for my original Dr. Scholls, another niece discovered my trunk of 1970s Disco Danskins outfits but also fell in love with my 1960s hippy deerskin crossbody with fringe.

I suggest buying what makes your heart sing. When it goes out of style, and it will, either continue to wear it bc you love it and don't care what the newest fashion Gods decree, or, save it until it comes back in style. And it will.

JMHO.

Not a problem, I wasn't in a rush :) But this helps immensely! And it looks like your bag is in pretty good shape if you've used it this long and often. The SA did warn me about it being a lint collector. If and when you do use a lint roller does it mess up the velvet and pulls too much velvet off? (not sure if that made sense) Sorry for asking so many questions! I've always gravitated towards leather or canvas purses and I don't want to regret choosing the wrong bag!

I prefer a clothes brush over tape for my velvet. Even better is a barely damp, clean, white washcloth.
