Do you tell people you bought an item pre-loved?

Actually people do ask if they bought a car used or new. The same thing with a home--it usually sparks conversation. Now personal clothes and accessories aren't usually discussed like cars and homes (and yes kids), but people do indeed ask.

Really???? 😵 I haven't had anyone ask me questions like this - ever. I'm genuinely puzzled. Why would anyone feel those questions are appropriate / why would the asker want this insight? If the car is nice, I'd say "GREAT car!" I wouldn't ask about how they sourced it unless I was in the market for that exact car / bag / etc. and wanted insight for my use.

You're lucky that no one asks you that stuff. I've had many people ask me and I'm always a little shocked because I was taught it's rude to ask those things.

I'm a big fan of thrifting and buying used bags and accessories. Even shoes. I have a much better wardrobe than I could otherwise afford. I couldn't care less what other people think about the practice. If people don't like it, that means there's more for me to choose from at the thrift store :)

Just as my weight, bra size and age aren't anyone's business, either is where I get my bags.
No one really asks....I would tell someone I got a bag preloved before I'd disclose age or weight.

Funny some woman I'd just met asked me my age and I wouldn't tell her. She had been drinking and started obsessing about it, asking my DH when I left the room, etc. The more she asked the more I wouldn't tell her.

I've had SAs in Nordstrom ask where I got a bag and I told them online but they didn't specifically ask if it was new and I didn't say.

How tacky. I work with teens and the girls occasionally come up with some inappropriate ones (are you married? Or my favorite: What will you do if your son turns out to be gay?)

But that surprises me from an adult. Even with alcohol involved.

yeah, at first I laughed it off but after about the 3rd time she asked it wasn't funny
You could see her husband getting annoyed at her too.

No. Some think that I have money, but I love luxury items. The only way that I can afford most of what I have is through the resale/consignment/thrift/secondhand market.

If people ask I just tell them but there is this one incident with a friend. She's extremely rich. She asked where I got my bag from. I told her that I got the bag preloved. See, she's the type who has a room full of bags and can just purchase a luxury bag on a whim. She offered to sell me some of her chosen items that she rarely uses. That's when i felt a little embarrassed. :rain::shrugs:

So you've never been in a conversation where someone is looking for a home and the question, "are you looking for new or preowned?" comes up? In that case I can understand why you're so puzzled. It's pretty normal.

What difference should it make?

Buy what you love & buy from where you enjoy the experience..

As a collector of bags, I buy from all sources & really it is no one's business
to ask or to tell...

The less discussed the less explanation...and to ask about germs when buying
on the secondary market, is very reflective of who they are..

There's absolutely no reason to be ashamed of buying a bag pre-loved. Buying pre-loved says that you are resourceful, and that you think carefully before spending your money. It also says that you are doing your part to limit the negative effects of mass-manufacturing on the environment. Hold your head up high, lady!! Anyone who judges a person for buying second-hand is completely out-of-touch with reality.

And yes, I'm happy to share with everyone that the vast majority of my bags are pre-loved.
