I have very contemporary and trendy tastes but I like to make my jewelry, clothing, and accessories understated. I also like things that look trendy, but will remain "classics".

Who do I need to be today?

I wouldn't call anything I own "Trendy" Which is to say, a lot of it was very trendy... in 1940! Instead, I'll use the term Fun.

My wardrobe is dominated by neutrals and reds, and is very simple and elegant. My handbags are half fun, half traditional. Likewise, I have some fabulous costume pieces from the 40s which are big and flashy. I have enamel pieces from the 80s, and shaped sterling from the 60s. A good two thirds of my jewelry is unusual and bold.
The remainder is so traditional, you'd think I had mugged someone emerging from a DAR meeting, Small, understated, classic and made of the best materials by the best designers.
I tend to wear the traditional pieces more, but sometimes you need to be noticed. Sometimes, you need to break rules. Sometimes, you need to know that you are still yourself, and not just the person other people need you to be.

It's an interesting question, because before I started making jewelry, I wore the same small diamond hoop earrings every day, and the only Tiffany piece I had at the time, an open heart pendant. Definitely classic. And I still do that wedding set/small diamond hoop/Tiffany pendant (and I have a lot more of those, now ;))/Cartier bangle thing every so often. Though I think it's probably hard to look completely classic with a tragus piercing and three helix piercings, I have these tiny 18K YG rings in very non-classic parts of my ears...

Now, I mix fine and fashion jewelry all the time. Yet I don't know that my jewelry is "trendy," either, obviously dated after one season. I work in semi-precious gemstones (see "Fun with Jewelry Tree" thread), and I think the things I make fit very well with my higher-end stuff. Sometimes I'm a bit more playful (see "What to wear with Love bangle" thread) but that's just my style now, and I think that's what makes people feel compelled to comment on my style, that I'm not one or the other. I remember once there was a shopgirl who admired my earrings, admired my bracelet, admired my rings, and then told me, "I like your jewelry style. You can tell you wear what you want to wear." And at first I was like, what does that even mean? But if she meant -- and I think she did -- that I don't feel the need to make things fit into one particular "look" or another, then yeah, very true. I wear what I like, and I like shiny things. :D

I think it really depends on the occasion. Most of my wardrobe and accessories tends to lean towards the classic side as I believe the pieces are more versatile and have better value but I do love having a few statement pieces to wear on a night out.
