Do you consider the popularity and "it" factor?

I buy bags I like/love and that I can afford. I love love love the LV Capucines, but I can't afford it. I don't think I'll probably even be able to afford a pre-loved one someday, but chances are I'll always love it. Funny thing about me, I usually come to trends late or before they are one. When the bag or whatever is all IT right now, I barely register it. But then what seems like out of the blue a few, usually years, later, all of a sudden I appreciate and love it. Sometimes I'm ahead and yearn for something that seems to be under the radar. Then when it becomes popular, I've moved on. I'm strange, I don't know how to explain it, but it's not a new thing with me, I've always been this way.

I bought one bag based on popularity, and that was the Alexander Wang Rockie. Love the bag, and it hold a lot more than I thought it would. I just wish that it wasn't so heavy.
But other than that, I have to look at the functionality of the bag. I just don't see how anyone can carry the Celine Luggage Tote or the Philip Lim Pashli or 31 Hour bag. They too big and heavy not to have a shoulder strap. So, I'd rather carry my vintage Coach bag than a Luggage tote. It's functional, good quality, and I can sling it over my shoulder.

I definately don't go for the IT trend bag , because from experience, those are the bags that shortly , will go down in value tremendously.I don't go for the most popular classic style bags either because it makes me feel like a sheep to even be carrying it:p

Hi all!

The other day, a co-worker comes to me and ask me question about my GIVENCHY Large Antigona tote bag. One of question she asked me is "Is that bag a popular bag?" after hearing her that I laugh a little. I stop laughing immediately when I saw her face smirked like she was insulted. I don't mean to insult her and I apologize. Then I explained to her that I do not consider the popularity of handbags I purchase, that I base my decision on my lifestyle, how I'm going use the bag and of course my budget. It doesn't really matter whether my mom hate it or someone else hate it the most important thing is I love my it. Then she say thank you and walk out on me.

After that, it made me think...should I take consider the popularity of the handbag before splurging? How about you guys? Do you also include the "IT" factor of a handbag in your decision making?

I bought a miu miu 2 tone aviator hobo 3 years ago. had never seen it before but really liked it when I went into the store. It is not as far as I am aware an 'it' bag. In the last 3 years I have seen a couple of ppl carrying the bag. I am a bit of an impulse buyer. If I like and finances allow, I buy:)

I am not keen on 'It' bags. It was a different matter when I lived via credit cards and just bought for the sake of having something new.
Now the cards are paid off and I'm much more responsible with my money.
I don't buy bags very often these days but when I do, I buy timeless classics (Balenciaga/Chanel/Anya Hindmarch) that will not look dated in a few months time. I want to feel happy carrying my bags for years, not months.

Same here. I want a bag I know I want to use and have till the end of time.

I don't go after the mega popular bags anymore. I did that with the Fendi spy bag years ago and now would never wear the bag again. I prefer the more understated. Everyone is crazy over the celine phantoms and trapeze but I prefer to buy the cabas totes. I own a few of them and they are some of my ultimate favorite bags. I also own birkins and Chanel's which are more noticeable and trendy but I prefer the understated beauty in the cabas.

For me personally I think i would go for a more classic bag than an "it" bag.
When spending so much money to get your hands on a bag and the last thing you want is for the "it" bag to go outta style.
I would buy a bag which would never go outta fashion and yet make a classy statement and most importantly LAST A LIFETIME.
I look at the sensible function it has. Meaning that it's not waayyyyy to small to carry all my stuff which I normally carry throughout the day. I love medium to large bags as the tiny bags (celine mini) would not be on my list ever...
I just don't see a point in carry a tiny bag where u can hardly squeeze a packet of tissues :/

But like everyone's different, and at the end, it's your money so your rules

Thank you ladies for your wonderful thoughts about this topic. All comments and opinions are very insightful and fun to read especially to learn how each individual decision process.

I love to read more so keep em coming :)

No, I don't. Design and the material texture, and especially the cost are my major decision makers. But I do my research and read up reviews from the ladies who actually bought and used the bags.

Most "it" bags don't fit my personality or style. As others have stated I like the classics! I guess my most "it" bag would be the LV Artsy. I don't believe the Artsy was too trendy.

I like to walk to the beat of my own drum. SA's have suggested the latest "it" bag, like the new Fendi and Celine. If everyone is all over it, then I don't want it now. Also, "it" bags are targets for gawkers and thieves.

I have to agree with this, the more "it" your bag gets the more gawkers and thieves not to mention haters. LOL
