Do you consider the popularity and "it" factor?

Let just first say, I love the Antigona. It's a great bag, but it doesn't scream "I'm on trend!!"

Secondly, well,I have to admit, yes, the "it" factor appeals to me. There definitely is a part of me that wants to be carrying the "Height of Fashion." On the other hand, there are a lot of extremely popular bags that I have no yen for. Example, Celine bags and any other winged items. And Philip Lim Pashli's do not appeal to me at all. I don't like bags with initials all over them. In other words, I don't buy things just because they are popular or have that "it" thing going for it. But, generally, bags that are on trend, and come from "trendy" labels (the more moderate tier of trendiness, that is; I can't afford Givenchy) are the ones I notice and end up coveting and buying.

Lets pretend money is not an issue... Would you buy the "it bags" like per say a celine luggage just because its popular bag? Im just curious :)

What? No. Absolutely not. I've never been one to follow the dictates of what some advertising company thinks I ought to purchase.

Yeah same here. I may like what I saw at advertisements but it doesn't mean I want to buy those bag. I think even if I have the resource to buy them all I won't do that bcoz what is the use to buy it if I don't have the intention of the bag or I don't love it.

I think the popularity of a bag makes me aware of it, but won't make me buy it. Two examples: when the Balenciaga moto bag first came out, I loved it on sight. I never would have known about it had there not been a million photos of Courteney Cox and others carrying it. But it appealed to me on its own merits. OTOH, the Celine luggage bag has never appealed to me. It doesn't matter which star is carrying it or how desirable people say it is, I just can't get past that robot face. Also, on a purely practical note, I can't do heavy, hand-held bags.

I do like to know what's on trend and what the "it" bags are, but whether or not I'll buy a bag depends on how well it will work for me, both functionally and aesthetically.

Hi all!

The other day, a co-worker comes to me and ask me question about my GIVENCHY Large Antigona tote bag. One of question she asked me is "Is that bag a popular bag?" after hearing her that I laugh a little. I stop laughing immediately when I saw her face smirked like she was insulted. I don't mean to insult her and I apologize. Then I explained to her that I do not consider the popularity of handbags I purchase, that I base my decision on my lifestyle, how I'm going use the bag and of course my budget. It doesn't really matter whether my mom hate it or someone else hate it the most important thing is I love my it. Then she say thank you and walk out on me.

After that, it made me think...should I take consider the popularity of the handbag before splurging? How about you guys? Do you also include the "IT" factor of a handbag in your decision making?

I absolutely agree. I don't go with what's popular. Quality and the use I have for the bag is very important to me!:p

So true! I actually love the celine's luggage and phantom but despite it popularity and hype I can't commit on getting one because I don't see myself carrying the said handbag. The most important factor I consider on getting a handbag is "will I use it and where" not just because popular.

I totally consider the popularity of a bag! I tend to favour bags that have a bit of "fashion street cred", like the Antigona or a PS1 or something, but I stay away from very popular bags because I like to think that I'm a special snowflake.

I think there's a difference between "it" and "mainstream" though. For example I'd call a LV speedy or Chanel 2.55 mainstream because you see them a lot, but they are not going to go out of style anytime soon. Whereas I tend to associate the term "it bag" with a sort of fashion bubble that gets blown out of proportion and then subsequently suffers a fall.

ITA, LOL re the bolded line.

Actually IT bags usually turn me off initially because they tend to be so heavily marked up and visible, and I prefer to stay low key and unique to my surroundings. I think long and hard about these types of purchases much more than brands that are not as hyped for this very reason, I want to make sure I'm not falling victim to the hype. One of my favorite bags of all time is a Tano that I found for $30 at Goodwill :smile1: This from someone who also just bought her first Hermes bag :shrugs:

This.

I become aware of bags as they grow in popularity, so I might begin to recognise them in blog posts or magazines, but that won't make me lay cash down on one. Money matters and I won't spend money on a bag that is the top of the 'it' list if it doesn't actually suit my aesthetic, lifestyle and purpose.

Yes, I do. I tend to buy timeless classics that have proven themselves over so many years. However, these bags are so recognizable by the general masses, it's sometimes nice to have a couple of It bags that are mostly obscure by the public though highly recognizable by purse addicts. My only It bag is a Celine nano though I admit I am 2 minds about it. Not sure I will still love it 5 years later but it's black, has a shoulder strap so I think I will continue using it even if it's not proven a classic. Great for travelling too.

Interesting question. I buy what I like. Simple answer. If it's popular and I like it and I can afford it. Then I'll buy it. But the only 2 criteria it has to meet are 1. I like it, 2. I can afford it.

But that's just me.

I don't avoid "IT"/mainstream bag, but I also don't especially gravitate towards them. I like to be true to my aesthetics as much as possible without being influenced by these factors. That said, I would avoid bags/brands whose status have deteriorated and are associated with (or actually in) poor taste (Coach fabric bags with the logo plastered all over it, I'm looking at you).

I agree. Lifestyle is huge factor for me to decide whether I want to a certain handbag or not. And popularity and it factor is in very least of my concern but likewise other say here I don't avoid it bag I buy what I want and need.

I don't like spending lots of money on trendy bags because I don't want to look dated in 6 months. If it's a cheaper bag in a trendy color or something, I'll buy it, carry it a while, donate/sell it. But to fork out hundreds or thousands on the bag "everybody wants" is something I resist doing. Sometimes I fail, because some "it" bags are just gorgeous and timeless. ;) It's easier to resist items I can only see online, but if it's in the store, I'm done, unless it costs a LOT.

But I'm an older lady, and I would look silly in some trends. Nothing worse than a middle aged woman dressing like her teenage daughter!

I guess you could say I consider the "it" factor when I buy a bag, because I stay away from trendy bags.

I have been ahead of the curve on a few purchases: PS1, Prada Saffiano Tote. I've since sold both but I think they've become classics.
