Do you buy pre-loved more often or in store?

I'd say 85% of my collection is new from store and mostly on sale or discounted. These are mainly comprised of contemporary brands.

I have no qualms about secondhand bags as long as they have been authenticated and inspected. I go after pre-loved when I've missed out on a color or style from seasons past. Or maybe I didn't have the funds for a bag at the time and it has been discontinued. A huge plus about purchasing pre-loved is having the data on which seasons had the best leathers/materials. Other reasons: some of the bags I love and am eyeing do not have the highest resale value. I am patient and can wait for discounts.
Agreed those bags that don’t have high resale value is better bought on sale / discount or preloved in great condition !

I definitely consider buying things FP if I know it's a forever bag. My most recent purchase was new and full-priced (and the most I've spent on a bag to date). I just could not get it out of my head for MONTHS and I absolutely love the lines of the bag and the versatility (LV Epi NeoNoe).

I never ever buy preloved. I did it once from Anns fabulous finds and it had no dustbag and had lost the amazing leather smell this type of leather always seemed to keep even after using it for years so I sent it back. Never bought preloved again. I also don't trust the authenticity of what I'm getting when buying of random people online. I like to know the origin of where the bag was purchased to ensure its authentic and in good (new) condition.

I do sell bags I no longer use so I appreciate people who buy them and trust enough to buy them online, but never do it myself and don't plan to start.

For current styles I'll buy new. If it's discontinued bag that can only be found on the pre-loved market I would be willing but it's so hard to have the planets align - authenticity, the right color, size, condition and price.

I haven't been lucky enough to find pre-loved bags in the condition I'd like and at a fair price (expecially after the USD to CAD exchange, higher shipping costs and custom duties).

I almost always buy pre-loved!!! Sometimes the LV sales associates are kinda snobby!
I find that snobby behavior is store v brand specific. SA’s at my local LV fall all over themselves to be kind. In contrast, Paris they were complete jerks.

The only premier brand I have found welcoming no matter where I am in the world is Dior.

But, I agree with your overall post. I don’t need a hassle or headache when I’m buying.
Does anyone here also feel that full price for some brands are not worth the price tag? Pre loved - esp in good condition makes it easier to buy!
Yes! Many of us do. There is a growing and active thread on this topic.

Couldn’t agree more. While I don’t buy for resale (I’d like to keep all my bags forever), I have to consider it (I get bored and will sometimes want something new.)

A good example of what you mention is Jimmy Choo. Their quality is really very good. And, the bags sell for $1000+

But the resale is horrendous. I’ve bought two JC bags that were almost $2000 new. Both were in very good, almost like new condition and came from trusted resellers. I got one at 23% of retail and the other at 7% of retail. Many other fairly expensive brands like Dolce & Gabanna and Versace are similar. So, why I’m the world would I pay full price for these “premier” brand bags in store when I can catch them later for less than a “contemporary” bag on sale????

I comepletely agree. Unfortunately it's not always about the outstanding quality, but the desirability of it. A lot of quieter models go under the radar. You either have to wear it for life, or accept that big financial loss. It's for this reason that I'm afraid to spend the full amount on brands like Salvatore, Tom Ford, Moschino, etc.

It's sad because there's so many attractive alternatives to popular/hyped bags.

My solution to this is to buy those less popular bags resale.

More importantly, I am trying to only buy bags (whatever the brand) that I’ll wear a LOT. That way, if I do decide to sell in 3-5 years, I’ve gotten enough wear to justify the depreciation.

Mine are half and half. I find I’m more willing to pay full price when I need something for a specific occasion. My last off the rack purchase was a small Valentino crossbody for a premiere; it was easier to justify since it was a “special occasion”

I have bought discounted from gilt and from real real as well - I always get my 2nd hand purchases independently authenticated for my own piece of mind. I’m terribly wary of eBay; I don’t trust the system enough to get my money back if I do get something fake.

I have.no qualms about buying second hand; especially for things that are difficult to get new (discontinued colors or styles, that sort of thing). Unless I’m carrying around something monogrammed with someone else’s name, there is no way anyone could know that I bought it at a discount. At the end of the day, I’d rather get 3 bags used for the same price I’d pay for one new (I’m lookin at YOU, Céline)

I’m open to buying second-hand but find the market to be overpriced, at least in NYC in-store, and online for Chanel specifically. I’d love a Chanel rectangular black mini, and was considering a used patent version that was $2300, but it had scuffs and scratches on it. The retailer’s recommended purse spa said they don’t touch up patent leather, so it can’t be repaired. Regardless of the discount, I find spending $1k+ on an item that is obviously damaged/used isn’t worth it me, even if it is a “bargain.”

I used to buy only new.. and then I had a baby... priorities changed and I felt a little guilty about spending so much on bags. And then I found that I can get preloved bags in great condition!
Now I'll only buy new when I'm on holiday in Europe (heh) or when the price difference between new and preloved isn't a lot.

We have one on the way and I’m equally torn between “but the baby!” priorities and the feeling of “now or never.”

I don’t buy preloved bags anymore. My favorite two bags are actually preloved but those are perfect and have no problems. However I’ve later experienced buying preloved bags with odors or fragrance that are very hard to get rid off ….and even bags that stated they have “no odor” when they arrived at my house and I opened the package, I could smell the light fragrance on the bags ….I detest any odor or fragrance smell on bags—> gives me headaches and I wouldn’t want to carry it and it’ll end up sitting there and I’d sell it soon after.

Only new bags from boutiques now work for me.. I hate dealing with problematic preloved bags.

I do buy both in store and preloved. But really prefer buying in store.
Preloved needs a lot of knowledge and research and I made the experience that there still can be uncertainties. Worse for me: smell. Often not disclosed or people just telling you there is none and then there is. Weird or old smell is the worst for me.
