Do you buy pre-loved more often or in store?

Preloved market in Canada is tough so I would say I mostly buy new. But if I see an item that I can’t get any longer or are sold out at a reasonable price, I will jump on it. With that said, I have kinda eased off of the preloved market now because for my last 2 attempts to purchase, the sellers were not pleasant to deal with at all.

Being a newbie, I have zero faith in my ability in getting a bag properly authenticated. So I love the peace of mind of buying brand new bags from the store. My OCDness also makes it pretty hard to realistically buy a pre-loved bag unless it’s 100% untouched, in which case then why would I just pick it up from the store lol.
I’ve also only had amazing customer (sales) service in the boutiques so far, which all play to the whole ‘new bag experience’.
Maybe with more time and experience on my hands, I’ll eventually develop the confidence to one day buy pre-loved.

I prefer to buy new, and all but one of my bags was purchased brand new. The one preloved bag that I do have, I bought because the bag is discontinued and difficult to find new. The wear was so minimal and the price was about a thousand dollars less, so I took a chance and have no regrets.

I think the main reason I prefer brand new is so that I can know the bag is in perfect condition. I don't have good consignment stores near me, so I have to look online for preloved bags. Also I keep a pretty small collection, so I don't mind paying more for a new bag for the most part. However if I see something I really like in great condition used again I'm not opposed to it.

I’ve started to lean to more store purchases because there are so many knock offs now so it’s hard to tell which is real...I recently bought a second hand Tory Burch Ella but I have my doubts it’s real

My wallet can’t afford the bags I’m stalking, new from the store. I can still have them at 50% off or more, preowned, perfect condition (unused, as said above,) sometimes even with the tags attached, and, I can sleep at night.

When you haven't been in the handbag game for very long, you sometimes fall in love with a bag that's no longer being made, so pre-loved is the only way to go. I have a mix of straight from the maker, secondhand, and outlet. I get just as much pleasure from the new ones as I do the new-to-me.
Loving a bag that's been phased out is so hard! Sometimes even in preloved market they're very hard to find.

When I first started collecting bags I bought secondhand 85 percent of the time. Now I think I buy secondhand 30 percent of the time. Although higher income *might* have played a role in my change of buying habits, I think it might have more to do with the type of brands I'm going for these days, which I'll explain below.

I can understand why someone wouldn't want to buy preowned and vice-versa. Personally, I don't care either way. In the end, I just want to get the best price for me. I wrote about my feelings on secondhand vs. brand new on a different thread in the Gucci subforum, but I'll share it here:

Maybe it’s because my first designer bag was preloved (it was a vintage LV Pochette), I don’t really care about the new/boutique experience...? I only resort to new if retail is cheaper than the secondhand market (which is especially true with some brands like Chanel, Goyard, and Hermès), the cost difference between preloved vs. new is small, or if the item I want is no longer in production. I’m also more likely to buy new if the company is small/unpopular and or family owned and not part of a conglomerate. Note: mainly talking handbags. I can’t stand to buy preowned SLGs, scarves, or shoes, but I digress.

Otherwise, I think the new experience is overrated; all I care about is the item and if it’s in good condition without defects. I hate when sales associates try to upsell me or make me look at things I’m not interested in or don’t need. Yes, they act friendly and personable, but really they just want their commission. Either that or I’m just too cynical. LOL.

Preowned is cut and dry; I look at the pics and read the description. If I want it, I buy it and that’s it. Plus I save money, which I always love. I mean, I’d probably care more about buying new if I wanted to build a relationship with the brand and be recognized as a good client, but things like that were never important to me. I’m too selfish with my money and I like too many brands to stay loyal to just one or two.

Out of all of my bags, only 4 of them have been pre-loved and it was because I discovered them after the fact. I prefer new if I can get it with a discount.

Agreed, pricing is so important!

Love a discount too, but harder for brands that don't go on sale... :(

I'd say 85% of my collection is new from store and mostly on sale or discounted. These are mainly comprised of contemporary brands.

50% of my premier designer handbags are pre-owned. I have no qualms about secondhand bags as long as they have been authenticated and inspected. I go after pre-loved when I've missed out on a color or style from seasons past. Or maybe I didn't have the funds for a bag at the time and it has been discontinued. A huge plus about purchasing pre-loved is having the data on which seasons had the best leathers/materials. Other reasons: some of the bags I love and am eyeing do not have the highest resale value. I am patient and can wait for discounts.
