Do you baby your bags?

I am for sure careful with my bags. IF summed it up for me, with the exception of twillies. I can never get them to stay perfect so they annoy me, kudos to those who love them because I think they look great. I specifically by leathers that are workhorses (togo, clearance etc.) so that makes it easier to maintain the bags and use them without worry (I save the exotics for my wallet:cool:). With that being said there is one thing I am off the charts crazy about, I cannot and will not set my bag on the floor, in overhead bin or anywhere floor germs would transfer to my bag -- Bust out the xanax if this happens!!!! I have visions of disgusting germs getting all over my bag and then I have to touch it:sick: I think this stems from my profession but it's the real deal. I ALWAYS have a purse hook and if that won't work then I proceed with all alternative I have devised in my mind.

I created an "emergency stain cleaner kit" that I throw in my make up bag. I have never needed it, but it feels like I'm being a bit more responsible in taking care of my expensive purchase.

I only use bag liners and the Orange Shields that protects the HW from scratches, the fact that I use OS seems to have cause a uproar in the other tread and people were also getting shamed for putting there bags in a chair and not the floor., like if someone does "Baby" their bag it is a bad thing. I dont use twillys or the rain coat, I use my bags and enjoy them but I take care of them and when I'm not using my bag they are put into their dust bags. I don't care if someone chooses to baby or not to baby their bag cause it's their bag. I don't tell people how to care for their things. But, I personally choose to take care of my things.

There's been a recent wave of off topic posts in different threads relating to babying bags so I thought a topic was in order.

From liners and organizers to replacement plastic on the hardware to placing the bag only on a napkin/cloth when it has to be put down it seems that tPFers are engaging in some extreme behavior to baby their bags.

I find this fascinating and worthy of respectful discussion. I'm not attacking anyone but it does seem to me that it prevents you from really enjoying the bag. Maybe that's not the case? How far do you go to "protect" your bag from the world?

As for me, I use liners more for structure than to protect the lining. I don't really care if the inside gets scratched up, it's dark in there [emoji16]I don't use twillies and let my handles get dark on my Barenia. Basically I just try not to bump/scrape the bag going in and out of my stone house but aside from that I'm pretty carefree with my bags. I put them on the floor/ground whenever necessary and just wipe them down with Lexol if they've ever been anywhere gross. I use a jewelry cloth to clean up smudges on the hardware before putting bags away. I don't wear charms or the lock because i prefer things unadorned. I'm more concerned about bags being snatched for their visibility than anything but I grew up in NY when it was more dangerous.

It's not that my bags weren't costly (they cost the same as everyone else) or that I don't respect them, I just love them and want to use them wherever possible. For me to treat them like glass just wouldn't give me the same pleasure as bringing them with me everywhere. They carry happy memories of all the places I've gone with them and the people I was with.

I brought my new SO out just to hang with a friend yesterday, I was casual, it got rained on but bringing the bag made it a more special time rather than saving the bag for a special day.

Hmmmm... baby? It's funny that we say "baby your bags"... Because I can honestly admit I do. Why? Because I have a different sort of relationship with my bags than others may. While I don't put my Birkin in a stroller or a baby seat while driving.... my bags have names, outfits (twillies and charms), and I worry for their safety while we're out (in many different ways). I don't place my bag on the floor (except in my home/other's homes)... I will absolutely place my bag on a chair at a restaurant or share the chair I'm sitting on with my bag, I don't carry liquids in my bag that have any chance of leaking... I have heard horror stories about pens, therefore I am very guarded around shopping/airport counters and pens. This may all sound asinine to you, but it's SECOND NATURE to me. Really.... I totally wear and enjoy ALL OF MY BAGS.... you've all seen me in action... I wear them daily. I don't treat them like glass or a shrine to be worshipped in my closet... They are out and about with me wherever I go... I'm just CAREFUL. No, I have no interest in getting the handles dirty, I guard against food spills, I don't like looking at scratches on hardware but it happens and I'd be upset if I got caught in the rain with no bag to cover my things with (including ME). It's just how I'm built. I am the same way with most of my possessions. I won't fall to pieces if something happens... but I try very hard to keep things from looking worn out too quickly. It will happen, natural wear and tear is fine.... but my babies have an attentive mama who completely enjoys primping them and fussing with their outfits to keep them pretty =) They are babied, for sure. And I enjoy it.

I love your responses, MrsO and IF! They are completely opposite, but the one wonderful thing that they have in common is that you both get so much happiness from your bags

For me, I baby to an extent, especially when brand new. I find I have a hard time actually taking something out of the box to use, but once I do, it gets easier not to worry about it.

Did not see other thread.
But, hey, enjoy how you do. No wrong.
I told my sa that evelyne looked like a "horsey bag." And I hated it.
So, obviously wide range of opinions flying about h world.;)

I am a germaphobe so need bags with feet. I sterilize them with tiny alcohol wipes that I buy in bulk from the pharmacies.

Just curious, what is orange shields/OS? I googled but didn't get any result that made sense

They make hardware protector for H bags that help prevent scratches and tarnishing
Heres a screen shot I actually found them first on Instagram but they do have a website. IMG_1492958802.360128.jpg

I don't think anyone is being shamed and I swear "baby" is the least inoffensive word I could come up with.

I'm genuinely curious and I appreciate the folks that have posted how careful they are with their things. I don't think anyone had been told how to care for or use their bags and no one is right or wrong.

We don't all agree and we don't all find the same things attractive and I do find the adding of plastic back on the hardware to be...unusual? overly cautious? regardless, that product is not for me. I love making things my own and I love polishing my hardware.

If the forum is truly about to each their own, no one should expect everyone to agree with choices. I'm sure some people would like to take my bags from me for the way I treat them but they're mine.

I did stop myself from taking my new B to Soul Cycle this morning, I just couldn't shove it in a locker so I guess I have my limits too. I did shove my Togo Kelly in a locker just last week though [emoji56]

To some extent i baby all my bags with the exception of LV damier ebene which i feel i can wear dancing in some mud; like you do right?
I do tend to go by the analogy "i want my bag to work for me and not me work for my bag" but if i can place my bag on a seat next to me or avoid it from getting wet then certainly i will do that. And when i am not using my bag i will have it stuffed and on display or in a dustbag depending how long i intend on not using it. Every now and then ill clean my bag with a clear leather lotion and polish the hardware with appropriate cloth. I will use a twilly and bag charms for decoration only when wanted. However the term "babying" is open to interpretation. Is it babying your bag by trying to avoid it getting wet?; Thus are you then babying yourself by not wanting to get wet and using an umbrella. I think in general terms everyone would baby their bag in some way because the term "babying" is a very loose expression.
At the end of the day, each to their own.

And some further 2cents to the topic: "you do you" "what ever floats your boat and makes you happy"

Someone once said to me
"I want to wrap you in a towel and feed you birdseed you are just that cute" we could make that the way to describe the thread "do you wrap your bag in a towel and feed it bird seed?"

Just kidding
Trying to lighten the mood[emoji51] [emoji51]

I agree with most of what you said until you got to the end. We can't compare ourselves to bags because bags are material objects.

But yes, if you take special precautions to not get your bag wet, you are babying it, but there's nothing wrong with that. It just is what is is.

I enjoy USING my bags and they suit my lifestyle not the other way round. Rains alot where i am so i prefer/buy mostly leathers that survive rain so that i dont have to "avoid" carrying a bag. I do take care of my bags but they go on to the floor when they have to, not when its wet and dirty of course, thats why H bags are great they have feet! :amuse: Bag inserts make changing bigger bags a breeze fact that it protects the inside is a plus, for my smaller bags have realised prefer no inserts the dents dont bother me. I do confess though, takes me awhile to remove the hardware plastic
