Dilemma about my engagement ring

Ladies, one more question-

If I choose to go back to the solitaire on a plain band what kind of band should I go for? Platinum, 14ct or 18ct white gold?

I've always loved platinum but I heard that it scratches easily, and being that I plan on wearing it everyday it may not be a good idea. Thoughts?

Thank you for your responses! I've given it some more thought throughout the day today, and browsed through the "engagement rings- what does yours look like" thread. I think I'm leaning toward going back to the plain band and then getting a beautiful eternity wedding band. I'm also going to look into the stackable bands as some of you have suggested.

Question #1- can I wear the stackable bands with my ering before I actually get married? Will it look too much like a wedding band?
#2- can you recommend a place that has beautiful thin bands, or am I better off speaking to our jeweler about creating them for me?
#3- do you know of anyone who did what I plan to do? (Meaning changing back to the original plain setting after having had the ring reset in platinum with pave diamonds?) I'm feeling bad about doing this because we had our jeweler create the new setting in a week- something she said usually takes 2-3 weeks- in order to make it in time for our engagement party, and my fiancé spent a significant amount of money... I don't want to be annoying but at the same time this is my engagement ring and I want to be fully satisfied. Do you know what would happen to this band and whether jewelers usually give a refund for the difference that was paid? Also, are jewelers typically able to recreate the exact band and setting that they had created originally? (It was a plain Tiffany style setting, and the jeweler has picture as she sent them to my fiancé).
Lastly- Ame, you said to go with the plain band as it requires less maintenance- did you mean 14 or 18ct?

Thank you all once again, and I truly apologize for being such a pain and asking so many questions!!! I have no one else to speak about this with as I don't want anyone to get upset with me or judge me. I appreciate all of your suggestions!

I feel like if your fiancé paid a significant amount of money for this custom ring you should either keep it as it is or do as Ame suggested and pop the stone back into its original setting, but have the jeweler remove the head from the diamond band and use that as a band. I'm afraid you probably won't get a refund and the setting will be a waste. I personally like the original setting the best, it reminds me of my own, but if my fiancé had spent a lot of money to make the custom diamond band setting that I wanted, I wouldn't feel right not keeping it or using it. I am sorry that you are disappointed with the custom setting and size of the diamonds. I personally don't see much difference in the diamond sizes of the two bands you posted.

Plain PLATINUM. sorry. I missed that word! I personally never advocate for gold when Platinum is an option.

For your current setting, I actually think the size of the stones is perfection for your engagement stone, any bigger would make your stone look smaller AND less amazing. If you put larger stones in your setting/wedding band, they will compete with your main diamond and it in turn looks smaller and "misfires" against the smaller stones. It won't look as good when they're all lit up by comparison no matter how well cut it is.

What LMG just said what I was saying earlier regarding a wedding band: have the jeweler pull the peg setting out of your current ring, replace that with a stone or fill it with metal (that assumes this band is eternity) and use that for your wedding band. Then put the diamond back in the original setting if you can--if not, the closest thing available in the SAME metal as the current setting (so that you have no wear issues). You will almost certainly not get your money back on that setting, you're going to likely get scrap rate which will be, at most $500, and that's a VERY GENEROUS guesstimate.

I agree with above. To be honest, I don't see a difference in the size of diamonds, it appears they are similar (if not the same) size, but are set differently. The "want" photo appears to have a fishtail setting (which I prefer as it allows the diamonds to be seen better (keeping their round shape, with less of the metal showing).

Keep us posted on what you decide :) (and congratulations!)

Thank you so much, HauteRN and Ame for your thorough replies and great advice!

I just contacted my jeweler to schedule an appointment with her. I will be seeing her after November 5th, and will discuss the option that you have suggested. I will give it some more thought until then and try to prep my fiancé in such a way that won't upset him... He is amazing and gave me the most beautiful ring in a very special way! I feel extremely blessed and lucky, and don't want to seem unappreciative. I just want to love my ring as much as I loved it when I first received it... And it this point I don't... It's absolutely stunning and I get lots of compliments on it, but doesn't feel completely right to me.

I will post an update once I finalize things. Thank you all!!!

Perhaps you could keep the new diamond setting and put a colored stone in it at a later time, to wear as a right hand ring. I have a plain solitaire that I wear with different diamond bands, it gives me the option of subtle sparkle or super bling. I know it's a hard decision, good luck!

Also a good option. If you can reuse this setting as a wedding band it would save SO MUCH MONEY.

I have had wedding bands from 1.9mm to 2.7mm and I also have one slightly over 3mm... the narrower the band and smaller the stones the better your main diamond is gonna look.

The engagement ring is the EXACT same in all the photos.

Sorry to be posting this here. I don't want to hijack someone else's thread but I can't start my own thread yet and this feels like my question might be related. Just delete it if necessary.

Anyway, I was wondering for a budget conscious couple, where would be the best place to get a wedding ring set? We're looking at this site, junojewelry.com and are liking some of their sets or possibly get a custom set from them, if budget allows. But would that be economical over getting a set from a local jeweler or a mall-based jewelry store?

Thanks.

Thank you so much Ame and ETK123 for sharing your thoughts and pictures! I agree with everyone's statements about using a thinner band to make the solitaire stand out more. As of now I'm still debating about changing this setting to the original one or not. If I do, I'm going to try to keep this band to serve as my wedding band.

This ring is starting to grow on me.... So I may end up keeping it! I will make up my mind sometime around Nov 5th when I visit the jeweler. My fiancé should have never let me choose my own setting... It's always so dangerous to give me choices!

View attachment 2376486 thats another pic of my current setting.

Thank you all so much once again! I will keep you posed.

I think that you at least need to wait until you try on wedding bands with the new setting. I have a very similar setting to the new one your fiancé had made and it looks so good with a variety of wedding bands. You can search my threads and see all the different options I have to wear. I've never had a ring that was so versatile. We bought it and I only had one of my bands with me. When I got home and tried on all my other bands, I was amazed at how well everything went. I don't think you will get out of it what you have in it if you change.
