hey sweetie!there is difference between old and new cuts, have a look on Has Anyone Seen This Ring Thread,I a put post on there I think you'd enjoy. And lots of girls want new rings, which is fine,as they want thier diamond to be 'new and fresh' for the new stage in their relationship, which is a lovely sentiment, something of a lovely story about how they went to get it etc, when they eventually pass them down!!!
Ok! My mom's got diamonds that have been with her for at least 50 years and for some reason, I cant tell the difference LOL Except the settings are just not my style:yucky: If she passes them down to me, I would definitely have them re-set!!! LOL

P.S. I just checked out that thread and I still cant see the difference LOL They are all beautiful diamonds!!!

I completely agree with the original post in this thread. When I was younger I became engaged (it broke off before any serious wedding plans were made), and he gave me a 1.25 ct old European cut diamond that was VS1 clarity and H colour (something rare for older stones apparently) set in platinum. It was absolutely stunning set in a hand made basket with small diamonds on the band. The woman who sold it dated the ring circa 1914 and I was very lucky that it showed very little signs of wear. I was in love with that ring (too bad the man didn't work out) and when I picked up the insurance paper work found out it cost only $12,000 but to purchase brand new would have cost well over $20,000 to replace. So there is certainly a lot of money to be saved in purchasing antique or even contemporary jewelry that has been pre-owned. With the antique jewelry you get truly a unique piece, with a stone that was hand cut and polished and sparkles in an entirely different way than round brilliants of today. One person in this thread used “romantic” to describe antique jewelry and I think that captures it well.

ps I forgot to put photos on!Here it is in a more comtemporary setting, never let an awful setting put you off, this was in a truly ugly one,the stone is whats important, a good gold smith can create what ever your heart desires.

Thanks for sharing your photos, by the way, your ring is lovely!! You don't happen to have pictures of the original setting do you? That would be fun as a compare and contrast. :smile1:

Excellent thread- I don't understand the aversion to used stones. I prefer the older cuts anyway, when you consider how relatively "easy" it is to cut stones with precision today as opposed to long ago, today's wild cuts seem a bit manufactured to me.

Ive had reservations about used jewlery...but the more I look around....the older pieces have such unique and wonderful design and quality....

And it is very true that alot of them are worth more than those you can get new...but some are less....like many cuts that were the rage back in the day, is no longer valuable...so doing some research is better than going in withou any knowlege at all...

But on the whole, the older pieces are truely magnificent and one of a kind...made with such detail and quality that you cannot find today without custom making your own...

OOOOOOOOOOO!!!THAT thing was ditched immediately!!! It was a twelve!!! claw basket that cut out all the light into the back of the stone, and the whole thing was remarkably ugly! When the goldsmith had finished doing the swap over(I sat and watched,it was fascinating!!) he asked if I wanted the old setting back 'not bloody likely! do you want it for anything?' then he said 'no!!! not at all!! the only thing left is who wants to stamp on it!!!' we had a bit of a scuffle to be first, but after that it was stamped out of existance!! Then he happily took the metal to melt down and use for a couple of model making projects he had on the go,so as far as I know it went on to be the prototype for some truly gorgeous rings he was designing and working on!!!!

I think old cut are getting on for the 100 plus years, tell you what, later on when I have time I will do you some drawings of the differences and photograph them and post them on here for you,and I will go back over some of the trade reference books for more details, you seem a gal thats totally switched on by details,so it would be my pleasure to oblige!!!!xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The old cut has a very unique beauty and Im glad many are seeing that these days as opposed to one time when every jeweller were recutting them. There is a very strong following on Pricescope if any one is interested. Chaz, they would love your ring to bits and be very grateful for seeing it!!!!:wlae:

Will do,its always nice to keep 'the golden oldies' alive, and it is very lovely to see many girls these days appreciating they're unique and individual charms possesed by each one, they do seem to have an individuality to them that does appeal to quite a lot!!

As you get older you see this happen quite a bit. One minute there is new technology and something becomes yesterdays news.....then after some time the old thing is put back on a pedistal and almost `craved`. Its to do with nostalgia, recognising charm and old world skills, valuing real talent that we know is rare......I personally see this as coming home!!!!!! And it happens in all countries too, one generation sells off the families `junk` and the next generation buys it all back as antiques and collectibles!!!!

Chaz your ring breaks ground because it is both old fashioned and modern at the same time. You are right about the cutter who must have had a lot of pride in his work. Your ring could take on any of the modern cuts and hold its own. It is very pretty.

Just so glad it survived all this time to become mine, and then one day Sophies! As she's only 16 months right now it will stay with me for a while longer until it continues its journey with her.Its history will expand still further.I'm just grateful it somehow managed to survive the trend for re-cutting,the lady who owned must have loved it just the way it is.Thankfully.

If anyone has any questions please ask I had 14/15 years in the trade,so if I can help with anything don't be shy.If I can answer immediately I will,if not I can research for you within my contacts and get back to you.xxxxxxx
