Diamond too big??

I wear a 5.5 and long ago settled on 2 carats as perfect. I don't think it is too big, especially if you will have a lower setting.

Too big is the 20 carat round amethyst 1940s ring I bought. It is stunning, I adore looking at it, but on my hand it feels like I am wearing a gumball machine container and I spend the day worried I will hit it on something and chip the stone.

Wow that ring sounds pretty amazing!!!!

I agree that no matter what, people will always have something to say. Might as well look fabulous dealing with it. Remember that this is what you dreamed about and if your fiancé is kind enough and fortunate enough to give this beautiful ring to you, why should you care about what others think?

I don't care so much now... It was more when we picked it out and then didn't get to see it for months, I had this crazy image built up in my head of what the final setting would look like... I totally psyched myself out. Once he proposed I had a huge sigh of relief because I was so silly for worrying. I am so grateful he got me something so special. Part of the "too big" insecurity stems from my super conservative work culture. Luckily everyone at work has been supportive. I did get a bunch of "wow I've never seen a diamond that big" comments, but I try to not let that attention bother me.

Your ring is stunning and looks perfect on you! Congratulations on the engagement.

Think of it this way--The bigger the ring, the less likely you will want an upgrade in the future. Hence, money saved over the long haul. ;)

It's great that you feel it's "too big" now because you've effectively hedged against future carat shrinkage. In time you'll feel it's a perfect size.

If you're ever in a situation where the ring makes you feel uncomfortable you can always flip the stone down or wear just your wedding band. In the meantime, you'll adjust to rocking that rock!
