Diamond studs : Tiffany vs Cartier

Thank you ladies... i do love Tiffany and Cartier and I want to choose between the two since I love them both. I know there are other jewelers out there for cheaper price but I want to make my purchase from Tiffany or Cartier... I don't care about telling people what brand I wear...I just love to buy what I love. As a history person, I love the history of both Tiffany & co and Cartier :)
My heart tells me Tiffany but I love the French so much...but I did not get the chance to see Cartier's stud earrings in person yet.

Either will be beautiful I'm sure but for diamonds I prefer Tiffany's.

Why does every time when someone asked if they should go for Cartier or Tiffany, someone always tries to divert them? If they can afford it why not? Tiffany and Cartier are luxury brand, for people who can't afford it, of course it seems illogical to spend that kind of money.

But if you can afford luxury, sky is the limit.

OP: on diamond stud I prefer Tiffany.

I absolutely agree with you.

For OP, I like Tiffany Diamonds and service more, just personal preference.

I love Tiffany :) yay! I said it here!! I've come from another forum where I'd be too scared to say so!! I love Tiffany because of the romance associated with it (been brainwashed) yes.

However for four prong stud earrings I can see Ames point. Like for example the Tiffany solitaire to me is iconic, but maybe earrings...hmmm there's more diamond than workmanship.

Then again the OP will know what she is wearing. So maybe Tiffany.

Everything that Ame said above. I can attest being frustrated at the lack of information Tiffany provides about their diamonds. And if they're not pulling GIA certs for my 1ct engagement ring, they're definitely not pulling them for .22 tcw earrings. No one is trashing designer labels (hell, I adore my Cartier pieces), but what I think Ame is saying is "know what you're buying". Designer label or not. I've been on some forums with woefully undereducated people who swear that "Tiffany has the best diamonds because they cut them themselves. No one can get the diamonds they can". Um no. With the exception of their trademarked cuts (Lucida and Novo), they buy from the same pool of diamonds as many other vendors who don't charge for the "blue box experience".

I'd only buy a designer pieces that are unique to the brand - eg. Cartier BB watch or Tiffany Lucida.

Also, the bag replica analogy is ridiculous. Tiffany and Cartier didn't pioneer or trademark stud earrings. The Tiffany setting the OP is considering, is the one of the most common settings around.

I think what some posters here are trying to point out to the OP is that she an get better value/ quality for her money. If she prefers to stick to the brand name that's fine. But I know that I was grateful when I found out that T was not the best of the best and that I had to work hard to find top of the range stock.

oh boy... i thought i asked a simple yay or nay question :) anyways, thank you all for your feedback. I do like the Tiffany and Cartier experience and I know that I'll not look anywhere else..it looks like Tiffany is winning!

I prefer non branded jewelry as well when it's not necessary. No biggie!!
Since you'll only consider either of these then for me it would simply come down to
-quality offered for the price of current inventory.

Ask your SA for the reports on the pairs you're considering so you know what you're getting. Better cut quality (don't just go based on their "triple excellent" grade, you want angles and percentages!) gives better sparkle.

I've relied on many tPF posts, especially Ame's posts, to select diamond stud earrings. Last year my boyfriend wanted to purchase them for my birthday, so we read tPF quite thoroughly! (Thank you for SO much information and help!)

Hours of reading doesn't compare to seeing the diamonds in person though... Yes we were able to see in person the non brand vs. Tiffany. If you can, do this!! There's always a return window. Maybe you will be shocked at the difference; maybe you will be shocked by the lack of difference. In the end we chose Tiffany :)

Whatever you choose, congrats on new diamond earrings!!

Just this month I had to make this exact same decision. I was so torn thinking I should look elsewhere, but in my heart wanting either Tiffany's/Cartier/HW diamonds for reasons other than logic. We did end up looking at many other places and in the end I chose what I felt looked the best and "made my heart sing" - Tiffany's diamond studs. and I don't regret it at all.

OP - I love the Tiffany's setting more than Cartier's, but I would highly suggest seeing them in person if you're able to. good luck and what a wonderful dilemma to have!

I dream of getting larger studs one day and when I am ready for them, I would get the ones from Tiffany. I own many Tiffany diamond pieces. I love their workmanship and the service. So excited for you, please let us know what you end up with.

I've seen and tried on diamond studs from different brands, and I was unimpressed with the few that I tried on at Tiffany. My issue wasn't with the diamonds, but with the 4-prong basket setting. It appears that they use a standard sized basket for a range of diamond weights. Since the setting wasn't individually made to fit each diamond's dimensions, the earrings didn't sit very well on the ear. One pair I tried on had about 2 millimeters of space between the culet and the bottom of the basket. This space, coupled with the weight of the stones, caused the earrings to tilt downward when worn. Considering what they were charging for the pairs I tried, it was disappointing that they were set so poorly.

If it's between Tiffany and Cartier, I would choose Cartier.

The OP didn't ask about other jewellers that's correct however it was kind of ame to offer her opinion and advice which is much appreciated here.
If the OP simply wants Tiffany or Cartier only then it's up to them to ignore or take the advice
A simple thank you for your advice but I'm only interested in Cartier or Tiffany diamonds and I'm sure ame would have just left it there
After all ame doesn't have to advise others she does this out of kindness
How is ame supposed to know whether the OP is aware that you can get equal quality stone from outside Tiffany or cartier.
That is all Ame is trying to do, to help and advise so the OP is in full knowledge to the best she can be in what she spends her money on
If the OP has her heart set on Tiffany or cartier I don't believe anyone would put her down for that decision after all it is her money and her who has to wear it
I personally love both Tiffany and Cartier and would also choose my diamonds from those stores however Ame is correct that you can get equal and better quality elsewhere and I still appreciate any advise given even if I choose to go against the advice at least I'm not doing it blindly

I also prefer round cut to princess, and because of that I choose Tiffany :). I do agree however, that you might find better diamonds elsewhere, but if branding is important to you and you like that specific design then go for it. It's like how I am particular with watch brands; some offer the same quality and product and prestige but sometimes one brand just means more to you :). Or the J12 vs Cartier tank battle. The logical and watch savvy would obviously go for Cartier but them J12s are still calling many of our names. With these earrings, however, personally I'd get the best bang for my buck but it's not like you could go wrong with Tiffany or Cartier either.

Thanks for the kind words, xblackxstarx!

OP--if you are looking at a different SHAPE between the two, ie round at one store vs princess at another, that is a whole different animal. That's literally comparing apples to oranges. You will get the best sparkle out of a well cut round, as well as better spread (face up size), vs a princess cut, so keep that in mind!
