It sounds like the most freakish of injuries. The hit to his chest that he took while tackling stopped his heart.
It's a rare event called commotio cordis. It happened to an NHL hockey player in 1998. From the linked article below: "Commotio Cordis refers to the sudden arrhythmic death caused by a low/mild chest wall impact. Commotio Cordis is seen mostly in athletes between the ages of 8 and 18 who are partaking in sports with projectiles such as baseballs, hockey pucks, or lacrosse balls. These projectiles can strike the athletes in the middle of the chest with a low impact but enough to cause the heart to enter an arrhythmia. Martial arts is a sport in which a strike of a hand can also cause the heart to change it’s rhythm. Without immediate CPR and defibrillation the prognosis of commotio cordis is not very good. This condition is extremely dangerous with rare survival."

News article on Damar Hamlin with quotes from a cardiologist.

This happened tragically to a family in our summer community. Their son was struck in the chest while playing la cross. There was no defibrillator at the field and he died and he was only 14. They have a foundation for him and have been big supporter of getting schools supplied with them, so there will be one on hand at the kids sports events in case such a terrible thing happens.

Praying Damar will recover.

I turned on the TV this morning expecting bad news. I hope no news is good news.
This is so sad. Let's hope for better news tomorrow.

Dorrian Glenn, Hamlin’s uncle, told a CNN reporter on-site Tuesday night that Hamlin was resuscitated twice — once on the field and once at the hospital. He also said Hamlin has lung damage but called it “a good sign” that Hamlin is breathing using only 50 percent of a ventilator, down from 100 percent Monday, according to a Syracuse.com report.

Heard an update that they are trying to get him to breathe on his own. That involved rolling him over on his stomach because having him on his back was damaging to his lungs. I don’t understand it all but he is getting excellent care.
They did the same with COVID patients. My understanding is that it is easier for the lungs if you're on your stomach.

They discovered this method during Covid. If you take a cross-section of a lung while a patient is laying on their back, it will look like a very shallow pyramid. The area with the largest surface area will be at the bottom, less at the top. You want the area with the most cubic space to be free of fluid, so therefore have all fluid collect with at the smallest exposed area. Hence, they rolled patients onto their stomachs and found it made a huge difference. My non-medical explanation hopefully made sense, but that leads me to believe there's fluid.

I feel so sorry for him and his family. Such a freakish thing to happen. I hope he pulls through and fully recovers.
This is absolutely heartbreaking. I have heard from a respected source that it would take a miracle for full recovery. So many praying and hoping for this amazing young man who many of us had never heard of before Monday evening. So tragic that he was on top of the world and then this happened. Godspeed Damar, you so deserve a miracle.
