Curated ears a la Maria Tash

It's very interesting that he was able to do it at all. I went to three different Jewelers and all told me that they are not able to recreate this design because they would need to purchase diamonds with an incision kind of midway along the height, which is where the setting holds the stone. The jeweler could not purchase these diamonds because such diamonds could be only purchased in bulk and were only sold by two or three suppliers around the world. This makes a lot of sense because I couldn't understand why no copycats emerged with similar invisible set diamonds designs.

Likewise, I’ve been trying to find more affordable options for Maria’s diamonds. I finally had a 5.5 mm moissanite I had set in a threadless end style but the most minimal setting was a three-prong martini, and it still sits so high in the basket it looked weird in my third lobe hole (where I wanted it). So for now I have it in my first hole where it sits facing more forward, and then Jack & G baby chimes and Birks hoops.

I did find this vendor on Etsy (second pic below) that has an “invisible” setting using either moissanite or lab diamonds, but the basket still is quite big.

love this thread—i’ve recently begun curating my ears and got my first ever cartilage piercings—a conch and a flat! the piercing studio i go to only carries bvla, so that’s what i have in right now.

i’ve read the blogs of lynn loheide (who also has a tiktok!), they’re a piercer that makes a lot of content and they’ve talked a bit about how the standards for body jewelry are very different from fine jewelry. for example, the posts should be perfectly smooth, with no nicks or even stamps or hallmarks since that’s a crevasse for bacteria to gather! i’ve found their resources to be pretty helpful for piercing education.

I think this earring from Etsy looks pretty good. You mentioned that the basket looks high but Maria Tash's baskets get higher with the increasing size of the stone. I tried on her 5 mm invisible set diamond studs and the baskets were pretty large, kind of sticking out above the ear.

Interesting to know! Also, since you’ve seen the Tash version irl, is the basket entirely closed? I’ve wondered about how the stone would reflect light, and how would you clean it if the basket had no openings? Maria Tash really should have 3D videos on her website!

I guess there really is no way to get away from studs sitting high as you go higher in carat size. I’ve seen some edgy reverse-set studs…maybe that’s the way to go!

Yes, it's completely closed and there's no space on the side like on the pic from Etsy. I'll take my earrings out and take a photo tomorrow. I think they're very sparkly and there're no issues with cleaning because nothing can get inside (since there's no opening). I just clean them with a cotton pad and soap. The jeweler that I asked about making a similar design recommended me not to use ultrasonic cleaners on invisible set diamonds because it can loosen the setting and increase the probability of the stone falling out.

@foxgal Apologies for the quality of the photos. I tried to take better pics, but it's really hard to photograph such a small and shiny object lol. This is MT's threaded 3.5 mm stud in YG.

Upgraded to my permanent piercing for my Conch. It’s Maria Tash Apsara curved and I love it.

Omg, that’s gorgeous! At first I thought it was a daith ring…one day I hope to get the invisible set daith ring version.

Just got a 6 mm geometric gold triangle for my third hole from Etsy seller KPDesignBodyJewelry. Happy with it for the price, solid 14k.

Thank you so much. This piece just shines and is so insane. I got a conch specifically for this earring. Yes that will be so fabulous in your daith.

I have 3 holes in my left ear and 2 in my right. I recently got beautiful diamond earrings for an event. I will wear them in my main holes. I would like tiny diamond “sprinkles”, for lack of a better explanation, in my other holes, so 3 needed. I want them tiny but sparkly. Where would you recommend getting them? Diamonds vs labs or other? And size? 1/5? Any help much appreciated!!!

Oh and my jeweler wouldn’t make that small, I don’t think, and it’s probably better just to order premade, I think.

That will look very pretty! What size are your main pair? I think around one-third to one-half the size of the main pair would be balanced. Or you could do something slightly different, like smaller ones set in a triangle or flower or crawler.

If you want flatbacks, I’ve had a really hard time finding lab stones, so you might have to go with mined stones from Maria Tash which I’ve heard are good quality and sparkly but pricey. You can also find lots of options on Etsy in diamond and moissanite but quality can really vary.
