Wow! Concern about incorrect descriptions is just one of the reasons I've been reluctant to consign with them. I had assumed consigning in person might prevent this from happening! Do they not inspect and note condition then, while you're there?

Not long ago, I was in one of their stores. I asked to see an item, and noticed it was not as it was described online. It was, in fact, a more expensive item from the same designer. Because it wasn't the item I was looking for, I passed, but I noted the discrepancy to the salesperson. My comment was met with a blank stare, and no reaction. I tried again, saying, someone should reevaluate this piece for the consignor as the item is worth more, and likely should be priced higher. Again, blank stare, and no comment. In fact, it was as if the SA could not wait to get rid of me, when, right before I pointed this out she'd been helpful and friendly. So weird! It didn't seem anything would be done to correct the description and pricing of this expensive item, and I later noticed it had sold with the original (incorrect) description and retail value.
I guess, to them, it doesn’t matter how accurate description is, their goal is to sell as fast as they can, just my guess.

Thank you for your responses! @chicklety @etoile de mer @Mrs.Z Right after I posted, I sent a text to RR. They responded quickly. I gave them the items numbers and told them how upset I was. The response was that a case was opened for the items to be reviewed. They will not list for sale on the site until the review is complete and I am informed. If they want to send them back to me at their expense, that would be fine, but I am not going to pay for it myself. I told them that I had things listed and sold before with RR and never had this experience.

After speaking with a friend, we came to the conclusion that with luxury item sales slowing down, RR is lowballing everything to get sales. What I don't understand is how they could call these items as "good" when even the pictures they were showing demonstrated that there was zero wear on the soles and anywhere else on the shoes. If someone bought them as "good" they would be in for a very pleasant surprise.

We'll see if someone with better eyesight can do better and I will come back and let you all know.

And thank you for posting this! You inspired me to send in a lil' "complaint" just now. I had the opposite happen - bought a coat listed as "no signs of wear" - paid the full asking price - and it is definitely quite worn so...I thought they ought to know! Keep us posted! :drinks:

Couldn't you return it or was it a final sale? If finale sale, I would still complain.

ZERO STAR IF I COULD

I URGENTLY CAUTION against engaging with The RealReal for consignment services!!! My experience represents an egregious case of gross mismanagement, deceptive practices, and utterly deplorable customer service, resulting in significant distress, and wasted time. On April 18, 2025, a representative from The RealReal arrived at my residence to collect a high-value designer bag for consignment. I was assured by their “concierge” that the evaluation and listing process would take no longer than two weeks, and that I could request my bag back at “anytime”. This promise was the first of many flagrant misrepresentations!

Six weeks elapsed—until May 31, 2025—before I received any update, despite my relentless efforts to obtain information. Throughout this period, The RealReal maintained complete silence, forcing me to repeatedly contact the representative who collected my item. Responses, when they came, were infrequent, dismissive, and invariably instructed me to “wait.” After finally authenticating and accepting my bag in “excellent” and “authentic” condition—consistent with its original state—they proposed a listing price, which I accepted. Yet, no further action was taken.

By June 5, 2025, nearly two months after relinquishing my bag, it remained unlisted. I was left in a state of extreme unease, questioning the whereabouts and handling of my valuable property. My attempts to seek clarity: countless calls, emails, and text messages (all documented) were routed through an indifferent customer service representatives, they were all different people at each time. Each interaction required me to recount the entire saga anew, as no continuity, or accountability existed within their system. These representatives displayed a shocking lack of urgency, offering ZERO resolutions, and refusing to escalate my concerns to senior management capable of addressing the issue. There was this person who was supposed to be their upper “customer care”, whom emailed me a few times to set up a call with me, to supposedly help me with the situation, I set up the call with her 3 times with time & date within the window she gave me, she did not call. She wasted my time taking off work, sitting around waiting for 3 times in the row. She called back out of the sudden (unscheduled, when I was not expecting her) after 11 days MIA, to ask me if I needed help AFTER the bag was already sent out by someone else.

After this prolonged nightmare of delays, frustration, and uncertainty, The RealReal delivered a baseless and infuriating claim on June 8: that my bag, previously accepted as “excellent,” was now deemed “altered” and would not be listed. This abrupt reversal was unsupported by evidence, and my requests for documentation or explanation were ignored. Only after exhaustive demands did they agree to return my bag, which was finally sent back to me on June 18, 2025—two months after the initial collection. The entire process was a grievous waste of trust, time, and emotional energy.

This company’s conduct is utterly reprehensible. The RealReal’s systemic failures—misleading assurances, prolonged retention of valuable property without justification, and refusal to provide transparency or accountability—reflect a profound disregard for their clients. My prior experiences with their retail services, involving returns for inauthentic or misrepresented items, further corroborate their untrustworthiness. I implore potential customers to heed the numerous negative reviews online, which I regrettably overlooked. AVOID The RealReal & their incompetent their practices at all costs!!!

Not sure if anyone follows Youtuber Robert Welsh, but he has a second channel (Robert Reacts) that recently discussed a TikTok reseller (Local Korean Girl) that alleged they got hacked by tRR (I probably am not able to post a link, but the title of the video is "She Got HACKED...By the Store She Ordered From" and it was uploaded 7/11/25).

What do you mean by got hacked?
@iluvmybags
Sure. The woman in the story said she bought a shirt that was priced very low, got a confirmation email, but then she got a message that her order was cancelled. CS said that she requested to cancel it; she never did.
It was determined by tRR an employee went into her account and used her order number/email to cancel it. She uses a specific email for her tRR purchases, and she is the only one that has access to it. Policy is an account holder only has the authority to cancel.
So while she didn't get hacked per se, an employee took "liberties" with her account.

I am so sorry that this happened. A high value bag and they gave you a hard time and took way too long to return it to you. What are the people thinking that run this company? I noticed that even on the store level. when I brought in my things, the person taking them was acting like he was working at a fast food joint. Even my DH, who was with me, commented on this.

I ended up having 3 pair of shoes returned to me at my expense. I had to laugh when yet another new person in their revolving door of reps emailed me to sell things. I told her what happened about the bad description and bad pricing and it didn't make a dent. I told her bluntly that I would never use RR again because of their bad business practices and how it had gone so downhill in just two years.
