Consigning/buying with The Real Real TRR

I know buying bags on TRR can be scary with authenticity concerns and their return policy however, I wanted to share.

I have been stalking a very specific fendi mini peekaboo iconic in a particular color/style for 2 years now. Fashionphile had it for $3095, then it went $10% off, then had the 10% off special promo but was still going to be $2500. I found the exact bag on TRR in very good condition for $1500. I didn’t think, I just bought. It arrived yesterday…with dustbag, all original cards and paperwork and has stickers on the hardware. This bag is brand new. I feel a bit guilty because I know someone could have gotten more for it but I am thrilled. Sometimes it is worth it to take the chance.

I have a snark about their return process. I bought a bag and paid for the "return insurance" as I was on the fence about the bag. It was $44 (plus you still have to pay for return shipping). There are actual insurance policy documents issued. I decided against the bag so set out to return it. I literally have to file an insurance claim - including submitting pictures and any supporting documentation - and still get the claim approved. I filed the claim yesterday. Hopefully approval will come tomorrow. Even so, the process is a PITA. The silver lining, I suppose, is that this will put me off of any impulse shopping from them to avoid any backend red tape.

Exactly why I said that the return insurance is a scam. They insulate that the insurance is a given return, assuming that the tags are in place, and it is returned promptly. That's not it at all. You have to PROVE to the insurance that there was something wrong, not that you changed your mind. I understand that you can get some "deals" on the site. But, you have to also weigh getting a deal with realizing that they screwed the original purchaser of the item. I stand behind saying won't deal with them or Rebag. Screw me once, I learn my lesson.

An update on my attempt to return my item and get a refund….

The day after I made the above post, I did get an approval and postage. Just had to pack it up and drop off at USPS, which I did right away because everything has a time limit.

I got notice they received and approved the return on April 3rd. That was the last thing I heard and haven’t received return funds yet.

Two things to note:

1-they will ask for your bank info because they don’t refund to your cc, they send a wire. I’m half inclined to open up a bank account just for this transaction as I don’t really want to give them my bank info.

2-I don’t know why I didn’t realize this earlier but the return insurance is about 10% of the purchase price of the item. Yikes. So I thought my $44 was high but the cost is ~$300 for a $3,000 item.

I know you can get good deals on the real real but I’m going to leave the gambling to others. It might have been less of a hassle to have taken my chances with “item not as described”.

Sorry you had to deal with them! When they get it right, they really get it right. When they get wrong…disaster.

Hi everyone, I have been consigning items with TRR and I sent in a Bvlgari serpenti viper ring. It was in excellent like new condition with no signs of wear or tear. TRR rejected the item saying that there are signs of wear, damage and porosity. If there are signs of damage it happened while the ring was in their possession. Now I’m worried and wondering if it’s possible they could have switched my ring with a different one that was damaged. I have requested compensation for the ring and sent photos of the condition it was sent in. Has this happened to anyone else? What should I do? This is not the first time they mismanaged my items. Once I sent in multiple fine jewelry items that they “lost.” They eventually did compensate me but it took multiple months of fighting it.

Does anybody have any experience re: selecting the "Re-consign" option button vs just sending in an item (purchased from TRR) to be listed...I wonder which yields a better price for the seller. (a New with tags top, if that matters). Thanks, all!

My guess it’s just consign, if price too low, will you send it to them?
I think that they won't tell you the price until they receive it - and then, if it is too low and I want it back they will charge shipping fees (new policy). So, if I hit the "re-consign" button in my purchase history they may price based on that - either higher/lower/the same...vs If I send it in with a bunch of other stuff and they give it a "fresh look" the price may be better.... It probably doesn't matter but it would be an interesting experiment. :) Thanks for your reply!

You are welcome, and it sounds too much work for me, unless I can get at least $80 for the clothing, I wouldn’t bother working for it.

This is infuriating! I took shoes to the RR store. The listings have not gone live yet, but the descriptions and pricing is being shown. Two pair of never worn pristine shoes are being listed as “good” with some wear to the soles and heels and at a low price! Are they hiring complete idiots or are they so desperate to sell, in general, that they are pricing item low with a description of wear to justify it? Short of demanding them back and having to pay the cost of shipping back to me, what are my alternatives?

GOOD!?!? They didn't even go with "very good"?! I would keep contacting in every way that you can. Instagram-nagging helps. I'd be happy to try to send a message for you if you don't use it. I've also emailed some higher up contacts. Good luck...I mean Pristine Luck to you, Gracekelly!

Wow! Concern about incorrect descriptions is just one of the reasons I've been reluctant to consign with them. I had assumed consigning in person might prevent this from happening! Do they not inspect and note condition then, while you're there?

Not long ago, I was in one of their stores. I asked to see an item, and noticed it was not as it was described online. It was, in fact, a more expensive item from the same designer. Because it wasn't the item I was looking for, I passed, but I noted the discrepancy to the salesperson. My comment was met with a blank stare, and no reaction. I tried again, saying, someone should reevaluate this piece for the consignor as the item is worth more, and likely should be priced higher. Again, blank stare, and no comment. In fact, it was as if the SA could not wait to get rid of me, when, right before I pointed this out she'd been helpful and friendly. So weird! It didn't seem anything would be done to correct the description and pricing of this expensive item, and I later noticed it had sold with the original (incorrect) description and retail value.

They did the same thing to me, basically if the leather has a slight crease from even trying it on, they list it as a defect. They listed my Louboutin boots with a zipper as having laces?!?! The time to contact them is now, otherwise after it’s listed for some reason they are less likely to alter the listing. I had two pairs of Louboutin boots sell for a surprisingly large amount, both were then returned and sold again for a lot less. I hate the return thing, who knows how people treat things prior to returning them.
