Completely weird, off-putting experience in Soho Tiffany

I went into the store and asked to see the silver Return to Heart necklace. The SA showed it to me and when I asked to try it on, he raised an eyebrow and said "Is this for you?" I said yes. He said, this is really only for teenagers. I said, oh, is there an "adult" version? He said, "Women wear gold and diamonds"

Good to know, real women wear gold and diamonds (?!)

Needless to say I did not buy the necklace and certainly was not going to buy it from him. But seriously, except for the fact this piece looks a bit tarnish-y even in the store, is this piece really not appropriate for a grown woman? The YouTube Kate Swan wears it and she looks like a grown up to me.

Iam most definitely a real grown up woman - and not a teenager- I wear very little gold and no diamonds whatsoever! I prefer the youthful look of faux bijoux semi previous stones, that sort of thing. I get it that the SA could be trying to interest clients in more expensive items, but that is just plain rude. Try a different store SA and let us know how it goes. Very interested to read about a follow up.

How obnoxious!

Tiffany has issues with assigning an age range to their jewelry like their "Not your Mother's Tiffany" campaign. Tacky and off-putting.

I would have replied that I don't do "appropriate" when it comes to jewelry, I wear what I like. Then I'd ask to see more "inappropriate" pieces in silver.

I wore my RTT pieces in my 30s and early 40s. I still wear sterling along with gold and diamonds.

I experienced some snotty sales people when I was young (not just in luxury stores).
doesn't happen anymore. not sure if it's age or a culture change in the stores (other than Tiffany)

I have really appreciated all of your reaction to this and the assurance that there is not something wrong with me. At first I didnt realize it was an obvious attempt to upsell me, I just took it to be a gratuitous slap in the face.Yeah ok I know I am not 14 years old. But this does not look like piece for a teenager, at least not any teenager that I know. I honestly thought it looked a bit old for me, even. I meant the whole brand is a bit old or at least, staid. Oh I should have told him that but I just wanted to try it on and get out of the store.

I can’t believe he said that to you!! I’m so so shocked. I’ve never heard of Tiffany behaving in this way. I’ve visited the Orlando one, Vegas, NYC, LA and London one and they were all great experiences. You definitely need to report it because he’s potentially doing this to other women and it’s totally unacceptable. Customer service like that has no place in any industry, never mind Tiffany & Co!
Also totally forgot the most important one - the Paris one too!

Actually I recall my old SA making similar comments (not as rude though) when I said I wanted to look at the hardwear earrings in silver. The response was along the lines of why silver, you need to buy gold darling! You can afford it! No one buys silver anymore. I said I can't afford it.

Ended up buying them elsewhere. I couldn't afford the gold and no shame in that. I'm not paying 11k for earrings which are trendy and occasional wear. Plus I had a gap in my earring 'wardrobe' and needed a white metal.

You could have said grown men don’t work at a jewellery store- but that would have been a bit patronising wouldn’t it :graucho:

It’s just a bad sales tactic trying to up his commission when you suddenly decide to buy a white gold in a different style because he’s soo good at selling. Not everyone is good at being an SA and he certainly isn’t- don’t take it personally

Second the not to take it personally comment made by @Plum duff

Often these types are so used to spewing the same throwaway lines to people. The SA probably had said it to others before you and after.

Yes it's hard to walk away with that hanging on you, but the way I see it is, the SA is onto the next customer who walks in the door and you are not on their mind at all. So why should that SA be on your mind or warrant your energy?

(I say that in an encouraging way, I know we are human and it isn't always easy to just shake things off! Goodness knows I've dwelled on comments myself too.)
