I just washed my red canteen bag, and while the water did turn a bit red it didn't seem to affect the color of the bag at all. I haven't conditioned it yet but I'm sure it will look even better after that. This was my first Coach bag, received (new) as a gift from my mom, so It holds a special place in my closet.:smile1:

While I'm here, I have another question about conditioning. Do you experts think it makes that much difference to condition while the bag is still damp? I can't always get to the conditioning stage before the bags are dry. If I wait to long, is it bad for the bag?

Thanks!
I don't think it is that bad for the bag. I washed one and then ignored it for months because the turnlock was broken. So by the time I got the turnlock fixed, the leather was super dry. I just conditioned it a lot and it seems to have recovered. Maybe it would have been even nicer if I had conditioned it sooner.

Thanks, I'm sure I have some WD40. I'm just waiting on some supplies I ordered and a free weekend before I get started. I really like the leather on some of these older bags.

Be really careful not to get the WD40 on the leather because it will probably stain it. (I think I read somewhere that the 'secret' ingredient in WD40 is fish oil). If you can, it may be best to remove the turn lock. Good luck.

I have been reading so many of these rehab posts…many wonderful bags and ideas here!

I bought this bag on ebay and it was listed as a classic city bag. I figured out what it really is and now I've forgotten :D.

It does have some dark marks on the front flap which aren't really apparent in this photo. I rubbed one of them with a damp cloth and it just got bigger. I am going to try giving it a bath. Do you think the bath will help with the two rounded misshapen parts of the flap? I think the bag was stored flat for a long time and the large pocket underneath the flap has made the rounded parts.

Also, the turn lock is very stiff. Any tips on how to get it turning more easily?
Thanks.
It could be grime in the turnlock that is making it stiff. If you remove it and clean it thoroughly, that might be all it needs.

So ladies, I need your thoughts on this. I have this classic pouch, and have had it at least a year. I've never carried it, but it's in great shape, love the burnishing of the leather.

I've had it rolling around in my brain to add some square pyramid brass studs, maybe just a few rows, along the bottom of the flap. On the one hand I'm against defacing a classic bag, on the other, this isn't a super rare style, (it's made on NYC and has a serial number) or color, and I'd carry it more.

So, thoughts? Don't be afraid to speak your mind !

Working on this one now. Seller described it as 'lightly soiled'. I have no idea what that dark stuff is so I'll be dunking and scrubbing! This will be the guinea pig before I tackle the matching satchel.

I have the matching hobo to this and it definitely faded, fwiw. I got it fairly cheap on eBay but there was so much undisclosed filth I asked for a price adjustment. It's going to be a parts bag.

I didn't even scrub the suede on mine, I pretreated the lining (which was awful, and still is) and ran it through the wash on a gentle cycle. The bag smelled like it had been dug out of a trash can. The smell went away, but the interior still looks gross. It's got some great useable hardware though so I guess it was worth it.

I would definitely do it! There are plenty of classic pouches out there. I think it would look fantastic. I wouldn't do anything to a pre-creed bag probably. I intend to dye my NYC slim tote a color Coach never made and it doesn't bother me a bit. I'm excited about having a bag that is unique.

My satchel is here at post #995

The seller claims it's been dry cleaned and it certainly is clean inside and it's not dirty on the outside but could be colour transfer. I won't be doing a full dunk. Joodlz did a successful rehab on a suede patchwork using bicarb paste so I'll try that on a small patch first. If that and light sanding doesn't work I might even consider re-dying some of the patches if I can get matching or slightly darker dye.

Help! I have a coach crossbody that I love to carry, but it is the raw leather (no lining). The inside is getting little pieces of the leather on everything I put in it. Any advice?
Thank you!

I put a plastic bag over it, with a small hole cut for the turn lock, and then pushed it over the turn lock so only the turnlock was exposed. I ended up using some kind of lubricating oil that has a small needle-type dispenser. It's moving better now, still stiff, but I don't think it will bother me.
If I did want to remove it, what kind of tool would be best? Needle-nose pliers? And how do you bend the metal to re-attach it?

I confess I haven't removed a turn lock but I'm sure there are plenty here who have. I think you will find the metal is quite malleable so the long nose pliers should work to re-attach. Others may have advice based on experience.

I don't remove hardware that often, but at someone on here's suggestion I bought a set of fingernail cuticle tools. They work great to manipulate the prongs up and down. This is the set I bought from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/World-Pride-C..._sbs_bt_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=1WTPD6BE0ZGQSFH0A94Z
