Very nice. Pity about the strap. Depending on where it is broken you may be able to get it shortened. Conditioning should soften it up.

As an aside, do the dog leash clips on the straps have small anchors on them?

Also I think bags with glued-in rego numbers are from the early 80s, is that right Whateve?
I have proof that the glued-in serial numbers were used between 1980 and 1984. It's possible they were used in the late 70s as well.

Thank you!! The strap is a bummer though. There are many breaks throughout. I've thought about using surgical glue or even suturing the breaks....either way I don't think it would come out well.

That might work if you could then cover it with something. I've read here about people using 'Edge Kote' Perhaps someone who has used it could comment. It would help if you posted a pic of the breaks.

You might be able to buy a replacement strap or buy another style with the same strap and share.

I'm not sure if the anchors are considered big or small. You probably would have a better comparison.

I should have been more specific. Last year we discovered that some clips have anchors engraved on them and that the Basic Bag that was made in NYC is one of them. I've attached a pic of mine. Others have found them on trigger clips as well eg thread#9636 p643

Tenny posted her theory about them on thread #9122, p609

Now after lots of snow and shoveling back to fun stuff!!

I thought 'anchors' meant the bottom of clip. I haven't checked the links yet, but the anchors on mine seem to be the same size as the ones in the picture you posted

That looks like it would really hard to fix. Almost anything you could use would probably break from the stress of carrying.

Not all clips have the anchors on them. It just seems more special when they do.

Excellent to know!! Thank you Whateve!!
You're welcome!

I found my original post. I posted the eBay link on the authentication page. The response was that it looks like the basic bag 9455 from the '70s. It's More likely from early to mid '80s....correct? Not trying to start trouble and understand this is not an exact science. I am keeping notes on growing collection.

According to Coach.com, the basic bag was introduced in 1974. As far as we can tell, Coach started numbering creeds in the late 70s. So it has to be after 1974 and probably later since Coach wasn't using numbers in 1974. The Made in New York City creed was used up to the late 80s. So it is possible that your bag is from the late 70s but I haven't found any proof that the glued in creeds were used in the 70s. I have a bag with a glued in creed that came with a 1980 catalog, and a tpf member has two basic bags with glued in creeds that she purchased in 1983 and 1984. So it is my opinion that early 80s is more likely. There are others who believe differently.

Ouch...My only suggestion would be to take it to a cobbler and see if they have a "magic" solution...I'm sorry I don't have a better suggestion. And if you find a cobbler that has some magic, please let us know :)

I agree...at best you'll just have lumps of filler that doesn't have much to hold onto.

I agree with Whateve that it would be really difficult to repair all of the breaks.

I agree again...

Hello everyone,

I finally have time time to post pics of me first rehab. It's an Abby from '97.

I called jax for a replacement tag. I expected a leather one that would match the bag, but they sent a solid metal one. Not sure how I feel about that.

It looks amazing soozlz! And congratulations on quitting!

Here's a bag I bought a few weeks ago for $8. The creed is very very faint, and I can't read the style number at all. But I believe it is a Hobo Shoulder bag #9058. It was in good condition except the pull tab on the zipper was missing. I have made my own pull tab using braided red suede lacing along with a brass clip. I don't think it's a bad solution.

That's a great idea Aggie!

Hello Ladies..I have been rehabbing for quite some time and have found a lot of interesting 'pointers' here in this thread. So! I wanted to share a few things I've learned (trial & error) of my own. I'm sure you all probably know all this & it has been discussed in the past, so please ignore if so. :) Firstly, somebody inquired about mixing dye with conditioner. I often do this when I just want to 'perk up' a color without really changing it. I use plain, common KIWI(cheap) with what ever color medium I have that looks good..even the Leather Refinish which is quite heavy & opaque. Some conditioners will react & get 'gloppy' tho..so may need to adjust ratio. Second, white vinegar in the rinse will help cut the soap and helps dispel the 'old' odor on vintage. Also used repeatedly on mildew helps a lot. Now my fave thing to do..I hate the way straps curl up at the ends. Rather than washing & waiting to dry..I just heat up my trusty steam iron, use a thin press cloth & steam those suckers down! Works on any thing that tends to curl and make the bag look so much nicer. Hey! Didn't mean to ramble! Thanks for the thread..I luv it!

Thanks for the tips! I'm a big fan of steam myself :smile1:

I wonder if anyone has done a rehab on a vintage Coach pebble leather bags like the old made-in-Italy Madison bags? I recently bought one from the bay but the condition is really poor (from seller's listing it seemed a great condition!!!)

CC, I just did a Carlyle. I am not as experienced as some of the other rehabbers on here, but IMO there are some things that probably can't be fixed on a Madison. It depends on what the problems are. I would definitely pursue it through ebay like whateve suggests if the purse was SNAD.

Here's my Watermelon satchel. It turned out quite nice. After a quick bath I gave it three coats of Lexol, and then finished it with Blackrock.

 Wow Aggie, that looks fantastic. I am drooling over here!

Good evening everyone. Rehab #2 is done. It's a clutch (9945) from the '70s. The reg no is even glued in.

I don't have a 'before' picture. This thing was so smelly and gross I almost threw it out. It also has a clip-on shoulder strap. The leather is broken to the core in several places. Is there any magic that will save it?

It's gorgeous soozlz! I am so glad you didn't give up on it! I am in agreement with everyone else on the strap, I think your best option is to find a replacement.

Rehabs 3 and 4 on deck. My husband's coworker gave me 2 vintage bags

This one is serial no K6D-9995 made in US
The next is 814-2533 made in NYC serial no impressed on patch.

Can't wait to see how these turn out!
