My latest project is an NYC bag. Here it is with the strap off. She is stiff but should clean up nice. Not sure what they call these.

It's beautiful! Don't use sandpaper or steel wool. Someone rehabbed one of these and used Leather Refinisher on just the flap. I think it was the same color too. You might do a search in the thread for posts by Ledobe that include the word "courier", or it might be in the previous rehab thread. Personally I like the look of your bag just the way it is.

I rehabbed the grossest bag the other day. It had gum stuck inside the pocket. I didn't realize it was gum and the warm water of the bath just made it worse. I was seriously retching from the grossness. I was very close to just throwing it out.

LOL I had one with a melted candy in it recently too. It had seeped right through the leather making a big spot and it was like a peppermint stuck in the inside of the bag. I thought it might not come out but I sprayed mean green on it and it all dissolved away!

I remember reading that thread by Ledobe. I know it's a special bag, I was so happy to find it! I think the front flap might well look better with more moisture as the color darkens. I will do blackrocks and obenaufs to darken it though, since you ladies warn against sanding it down. I certainly don't want to ruin it!

I picked up this very very sad looking girl at Goodwill the other day. Never one to shy away from a challenge, that's me! LOL. Don't look if you don't have a strong stomach:

Here she is after a bath and just one coat of CPR. Obviously needs some more work on the dark and splotchy areas. Do you think it would be okay to try very fine sandpaper or steel wool on the darker areas?

I think I might be okay to leave the back alone, but I want to do something about the dark spots on the front flap. Any ideas?

Only in my wildest dreams can I imagine a find like that! It looks beautiful, I agree with others that the spots aren't that bad and will probably become less noticeable in time with continued applications of conditioner. Congratulations on a great find and nice work.:drinks:

Ohhh you got my wheels turning - I love that pattern!
Coincidentally, I accidentally did something similar just a few days ago so I think you could do it. I was trying to remove the patent coating on a wallet with acetone before dyeing. I rested it on a colored piece of cardboard while I was doing this and...
BTW, does anyone have tips on removing patent coating? I've tried nail polish remover and industrial acetone, scrubbing with a rag, and it still feels plastic-y and coated.

Also only in my wildest dreams! I literally floated out of the store with that baby! I couldn't wait to give her a bath.

@Belicious I am envious yet happy on your great find! IF I ever own a courier that I fondly named "well hung" (hehe) that would be the color I'd want! Great job rehabbing the bag! She is gorgeous!!
LOL @ well hung.

Today I put a coat of Obenauf's oil on her and it was amazing. First of all, it looked horrible. But a few hours later it's amazing how much nicer the color is, richer and more even and the all the black spots/sections are a little less obvious. I know it'll fade as the Obenauf's settles in but I'll keep at it with the conditioner to try and bring it back to this color I guess. I haven't even had time yet to wash the strap which is a shrivelled up, curled up, verdigris covered mess. But I know that'll be fine. Not too picky about straps anyway.

LOL! I went to the antique mall yesterday and actually found one in navy in pretty good condition for $65! I was over the moon!

wow, what a great find, she's wonderful! I say keep conditioning and maybe it will even out.....if it bothers you enough, maybe try a conditioner that darkens - I don't know what that would be - but I think it just adds to her patina. I have a vintage (this year!) brown Lula with an unfortunate pen stain on the bottom, in the front of course. I used coconut oil (it does not go rancid) to darken then black rocks over the top. Its not perfect, but the pen stain isn't as blatant.
