This is a Spectator Dinky I did a few months ago. I like it because it came to me with shoe polish all over it, and I had to learn how to remove shoe polish with acetone. It came out looking and feeling so much better! I got creative with a replacement hang tag (thank you Coach!) and handmade tassel. Fun project!

Wow, it's like a completely different bag! And I probably wouldn't dare to use acetone on a bag as I always though acetone ruins both leather and leather paint. I agree, Catbird, this is something to be proud of!

The Obenauf's oil is great stuff. It should be fine. Given the age of the bag, it would not surprise me if it darkens quite a bit. I've found that older bags tend to dry out more and hide their original color. I like watching them change color as moisture gets added back into them. I used cooler water and gentler soap on my bag from this time frame, too. My instinct was that it might be better for it, too. I used Castile soap for the first time. The cards in old Coach bags recommended Castile soap, so I thought I'd try it. It seemed very mild and not too sudsy. I'm definitely going to keep using it.

Is there a significant difference in results you get from Obenauf's oil and Obenauf's Heavy Duty leather preservative? Well, obviously, they look and feel different and LP is thicker, but do you use them for different purposes? I have a LP, but not the oil, and wanted to hear opinions about the results. Thanks!

I use something I get from the 99 cent store called Floral All Purpose Cleaner. It comes in a big bottle and I dilute it with water and put it in a spray bottle. I love the smell.

Leather Honey has a new leather cleaner out on Amazon that has great reviews. I've never found any leather cleaner that works better than my all-purpose cleaner but I'm tempted to try it.

Are you talking about this leather cleaner, whateve? http://www.amazon.com/Leather-Clean...ements=p_89:Leather+Honey+Leather+Conditioner And all-purpose cleaner - you mean, the one you just mentioned, from the dollar store?

They are very different products. The oil is more similar to Leather Therapy or Montana Pitch-Blend Leather Oil, if you've ever used either of those products. I use Obenauf's oil for deep penetration and restoration of natural oils for a bag, such as right after a bath and to recondition the leather. I consider it a first-step product when rehabbing.

I consider LP more of a leather preservative. I use it to add a layer of waterproofing protection and to help with scratching and scuffing. I consider it more of a finishing-step product.

Do you worry about the weather being warm enough for the Obenauf's oil to penetrate? I've glued the handles on my pre-creed mini briefcase now, and it turned out great. I used the super glue gel as recommended. I put a couple of layers of leather cpr on it, and the leather is really looking great since it was already in amazing shape for such an old bag. I'm feeling reluctant to put on the obenaufs now as the weather is not very warm (in the 50s) and I'm worried that will make it really slow to penetrate. I think it was about this time last year I coated a few bags in it and some parts went darker than others and I ended up having to wait a month or two for it to soak in properly and look normal again. Also I kinda like the color the bag is now... a little scared to mess with it!

I've used a hairdryer to melt Obenaufs when it was too cold to put in the sun.

Wow - that looks great! I love the rehabs that turn out great and you learn something new. I also really like the hang tag you chose - gives it a bit of playful whimsy.

Aha, now that makes sense. I use Leather Therapy all the time, but wanted to know more about Obenauf's oil - now I see I probably don't need another similar product. And I haven't really used LP, just tried a little on a bag's corner and could tell it's a very concentrated stuff that you don't need much. Thanks, coach943!

Yeah, if you have Leather Therapy and like it, there really isn't a need for Obenauf's oil. I bought some just to try it. I doubt I'll buy it again.
