I hope this picture doesn't come up huge. Here is the unraveling handle:
That's not where I expected it, and that is a much bigger area than I expected as well. I think it was never held by the stitching. I've seen this happen but for much smaller areas. You're going to have to glue it. Ideally it should be sewn as well, but I doubt you have a machine that can do it.

ETA: I've never actually seen what it inside. Before you close it up, can you describe it? Is it cardboard?

I use something I get from the 99 cent store called Floral All Purpose Cleaner. It comes in a big bottle and I dilute it with water and put it in a spray bottle. I love the smell.

Leather Honey has a new leather cleaner out on Amazon that has great reviews. I've never found any leather cleaner that works better than my all-purpose cleaner but I'm tempted to try it.
Great, thanks!

I actually can't really see inside it. Do you mean, what is the handle built out of? All I can see is leather. But there was some cardboard (I think, as it was grey and soggy) under the bit that came out and it seemed to instantly disintegrate. I assume it was there for shape, but I think it may have only been glued down previously, perhaps the glue stopped working with age as there is no sign of any loose stitching or holes where stitching is gone.

Right. I believe they glued them and then stitched over it. The stitching was supposed to catch in the folded-in ends of the leather but since it was glued, there was no way to know until the bath loosened that glue. I've used super glue on handles like these before but not in such a large area. You might want to use something a bit more flexible. I bet it is partly cardboard inside because some people have had handles get floppy. In these cases, I'd be tempted to inject super glue in tiny bits in lots of different places to stiffen it up.

I'm wondering if something like backer rod could replace the cardboard support that disintegrated in your handle?

Backer Rod is just a rope of styrofoam you can buy at Home Depot or Lowes (it's used in construction.) Comes in different diameters, is water resistant.

Just a thought....

True maybe the super glue could help as filler. I will have to be really careful with it though. I can see how that could get scary messy. I think the handle is pretty stiff in that part, maybe the hardness of super glue would be fine? I think it definitely needs to be some quick drying glue to get it to stay where it's meant to be.

Sonoma: I don't know if that stuff would fit in the little space I have to fold it into. It's really tight. I think the cardboard was really small.

Keep the ideas coming. I thought this was going to be an easy rehab. Live and learn!

FYI, if you decide to try it, Backer Rod does come in smaller diameters than the one shown....

Every rehab seems to be its own interesting adventure - I'm sure you'll come up with something inventive to make it work. Keep us posted!

About the super glue, there is a gel form of it that I've found a bit easier to control the flow. You still have to be careful though. Good luck!

Hello fellow rehabbers! I have been away for a while, my kiddos have been keeping me busy with school stuff! Just got back into the rehab habit this week. I am working on a cute Cole Haan tote that got into a bit of a scrape with some paint and it got me to thinking about amazing rehabs. I thought it would be fun to see what you consider to be your best rehabs.

Post the top three or five (or one or ten) of the rehabs you've done that you think came out great! It will be fun to revisit some of them, or maybe there will be some new ones we haven't seen yet!

This is a Spectator Dinky I did a few months ago. I like it because it came to me with shoe polish all over it, and I had to learn how to remove shoe polish with acetone. It came out looking and feeling so much better! I got creative with a replacement hang tag (thank you Coach!) and handmade tassel. Fun project!

This little key fob was very well loved! I dunked, reshaped, Leather CPRd, Blackrocked and buffed. Reglued the mini hang tag, polished the metals. I wasn't able to completely restore the finish on the piping, but it's "My Precious" anyway.
