Hi Everyone

After collecting Sonomas for a bit, I'm considering collecting Coach Madisons.

Can anyone share how easy they are to rehab?
How does the leather durability compare to Sonomas?

I wouldn't want to use a bag that I'd have to handle super carefully
or that wouldn't respond well to rehabbing.

But they sure are pretty!

TIA!

I think they are much harder to rehab. I've never bathed mine. I think someone has. They might have cardboard in them for stiffening. I remember someone reshaped one but I can't remember the details. Because of the textured surface, if it is damaged, it would be difficult, but not impossible, to replicate it. A little corner wear should respond to paint mixed with conditioner. The linings tend to be glued in so you can't pull them out to clean. I learned the hard way you can't use acetone on them.

However, they don't have to handled carefully. They last a long time and don't scratch easily. If you get one that is already in good condition, it will probably still look like that after much use if you aren't hard on bags. I love my Biltmore.

Guys have any of you tried cleaning this type of bag? It's getting pretty high and I don't want to spend a lot of money on it if I can't get it clean. I'm confident with leather but not so much with this. :shrugs:

I just had it authenticated by BeenBurned.

It's a risk. It might wash out and then again, it might not. Just like stains on your clothing. You can't predict it. However, I think you might be able to use fabric paint to help cover any stains that don't wash out.

Thanks so much whateve!

I'm not too hard on bags, but it would be reassuring to know that I could fix something if there is a problem. And not being able to at least wash the lining bothers me somehow. The Sonomas really are workhorses, they've spoiled me.

I guess I'll have to think about this (which at least will make my husband happy!).:smile1:

Nice job! I find that Coach bags reshape really easily, as this one did nicely. The edges also snapped back fairly well colorwise. Often the lightening on the edges comes from dirt, which can wash out, rather than true wear or discoloration, in my experience.

Thank you! I'm curious how you would fix the edges? I kind of like the distressed look now but I'm worried they may get worse, so I should probably try to fix them asap.

You reshaped it beautifully! As for the edges color, I've learned from the pros here at TPF to add some matching acrylic paint to the leather conditioner that you apply in layers after the bath. Depending on desired effect you adjust the amount of the paint you add.

Thank you! I'm surprised it re shaped so well, I normally stuff my bags but this one I don't think I'll have to, the leather is very structured now! Thank you for the advice with the acrylic, it might be difficult to find a color that matches well but thank you!

I agree this is not an often seen color - sometimes when I can't find the match, I experiment with mixing basic colors together; a brighter blue might give you the pale tone if mixed with white. Not sure if my tablet's screen shows the right color - I see it as robin's egg blue.

Yep that's the right color! Is it possible to alter the color slightly if you use dye? It's a bit more blue than ideal for me, I kinda was hoping it would be more periwinkle/light

You don't need dye. Acrylic craft paint comes in 100s of colors.

ETA: I misread your post. It's very hard to get dye to go on even and it alters the texture of the leather. If I wanted to refresh the color or alter it slightly, I would use RIT dye. Don't add salt. It makes the leather dry and stiff but if you condition it enough, you'll be able to soften it up.

I've never been brave enough to alter the color - it's absolutely the last thing I'd do to the bag if everything else fails. Then if something goes wrong, at least I'd know I tried all possible options. And this particular color looks very nice to me, but that's just me :-)
