Question, bought my niece a Kyra nylon signature bag to use as a diaper bag. ( Her first kid and first Coach!) It is in great shape, very clean, no strange smells. I want to clean it. Dunk? It has patent trim. Wipe down with a sponge and fabric cleaner? Seller's photo attached.

I don't think there will be any problems with dunking. I'm not sure the patent is leather anyway. I've dunked poppy glams without a problem. The Kyras are more recent. I have one from 2011 and I'm pretty sure the patent is fabric, not leather.

Following whatev's suggestion, I put the burgundy patchwork ergo into the washer, inside a pillowcase, in a load of dark towels. No damage. It came out looking fine, it's hard to tell how much dirt will be visible once it's dry, but so far so good. I couldn't see any remaining dirt although the suede is darker when wet. She's drying right now and I'll start brushing as it dries to avoid crunchiness.

Hi gals!
Some of you might know me from the Authenticate Coach threads.
I am wetting my feet in the rehab pool! :beach:
I've done a lot of touching up, some cleaning, basic stuff..but never did a "DUNK" rehab.
I've read a lot and there is so much information here, but I would love if someone could give me a starters shopping list for the products they think I would need for this compartment bag. I think it's a good one to start with, what do you think?

Please note the edge wear on the flap, I have no idea how to repair that so any suggestions would be great.
THanks again and looking forward to the outcome!
I just hope I don't get addicted to this like y'all because I don't really have time for it, but what the heck!:D

Congratulations! It's about time you got your feet wet! For the dunk, I just use whatever dishwashing liquid I happen to be using at the moment. I don't think it makes much difference as long as you avoid anything that contains bleach, although some folks love Dawn. For general conditioning, Leather CPR is a good all-around choice. There are many other choices but you don't want to use something that is made primarily for car seats or for maintenance of new leather. You need something heavier duty for rehab.

You'll need something to fix that tear. It isn't really bad so you have many choices. If you use a leather cement (I have Fiebings) you'll still need something to cover it to match the leather color. You can also use acrylic paint (the thicker artists type) or fabric puff paint. I've even used caulking. I usually use a little acrylic paint (the cheap craft stuff) mixed with conditioner to touch up corners. You can also use the artists type if you have it - you just have to dilute it with more conditioner. You want to make sure you don't have too heavy a coat of paint on your bag because then it won't look like leather anymore.

For the brass, you can buy a polish like Wenol or you can use vinegar.

For finishing, you absolutely need Blackrocks. It is the best product I use. I use it on everything. You can also use Obenaufs but it depends on how committed you are to rehabbing. If you want to get away with the minimum purchases I would buy Leather CPR, acrylic paint, and Blackrocks.

Whateve as speedy as always!!

I remember when I first starting selling pre-owned bags and began dabbling in fixing them up a bit.
I experimented and have found a lot of good tricks to make things more wearable and presentable,
and clean of course...and the great feeling it was to see before and after on my handiwork.
And I was shocked to find it thoroughly relaxing!

I am really looking forward to working on this one, but it will probably be a long process because of my other obligations, so don't hold your breath for the "after" shots...lol.

I have some acrylic paint in basic colors. The hardest thing for me is finding the matching colors/shades in dyes. Do you know how many BROWN shades there are????

I already bought the Blackrocks and will get the other stuff you recommend and then some.
Will keep you posted!
Meantime it's so great seeing all the wonderful before and afters here, very inspiring.

CYA!

Whateve has covered most things. I use Leather Therapy instead of CPR. You may need some vinegar and bicarb to clean off the verdigris from the leather around the turn lock before dunking. Also very fine steel wool to polish the turn lock, you will remove it before you start, won't you?

IMO I think that bag would come up really well with Obenauf's, but if you don't think you'll be doing too many then you can probably get away with not using it, but you will definitely need Black Rock. And a horse hair brush for buffing. Is it burgundy or mahogany? It's going to look awesome and you will be totally hooked on rehabbing!

Finished a few today.

Red Basic Bag and red Carnival Bag. The Court Bag is actually dark green. All were in good condition to start with. Just needed dunking re-shaping and conditioning.

OMG...These look amazing! What does dunking mean? I have a Willis from years ago that would look fabulous if I can get it to look like yours. What do I do? Is there another thread I should read?

This is the thread to read. It is a continuation of an older thread, but most of important things have been mentioned several times.

Hi guys this is my first post but what a fabulous forum. I've been reading for an hour.

I'm SURE my question is answered in here somewhere but I just wanted to post my story. First I've been a Coach fan for years and I have 5 but I only ever use one for years at a time. Now that I see all these neat ways to clean them I'm going to dig them up and post some more!! And maybe try to mix mine up a bit.

But as for this one...my best bag ever. My husband got it for me for Christmas and I just LOVE it. I normally use the smaller ones (and I'm sorry I don't even know what any of them are technically called ---> n00b)

So we get back from shopping over the weekend and I put my purse on our counter and it tumbled down and off popped the clasp that you turn on the front when it hit our tile floor. UGH! I am just sick about it. He just got it at Macy's in December and still has the receipt.

What do they normally do in a case like this?

Thank you. :)

I collect vintage bags so I'm not sure what their warranty is like, but it could be worth sending an email to Coach customer service to see what they can do. It might be as easy as having them send you a new turnlock and having you install it. (Which in all honesty, should not be a big deal and is less of a hassle than sending the whole bag to Coach from what I understand.)

There is a one year warranty. I'm not sure what Macy's would do but Coach warrants their products no matter where you bought it. If you take it in to a Coach store, they should be able to send it in for repair. They will charge you $20 but if you complain, they might waive the fee. It is very likely that they still have the hardware for your bag. Another thing you can do is ask if they will send you the part and you can install it yourself. That way would be a lot quicker but I'm not sure how easy it is to install the turnlock on these new bags. Usually it takes 6 weeks before you get your bag back.
