2 questions:

1). has anyone worked on nubuck?? any tips re cleaning, possibly redying??

2). expecting a very sad looking legacy with a tattersal lining to arrive soon. has anyone dunked one of these and not had color bleed into the lining?? maybe better to spot clean lining??

thank you for any and all hints!!
I've done a few nubuck bags. Two.times.bags and Joodlz have done some too, I think. You can give them a bath, scrubbing with a nail brush. Then brush with the nail brush as it is drying. You can also lightly sand away stains.

If it is a Sonoma, I pull the lining out while it is drying and try to keep it from touching the nubuck until it is dry to keep the dark lining from bleeding onto the nubuck.

The tattersall lining is Bleecker, not Legacy. I know Ledobe has dunked Legacy. I think she washed one in the washing machine. I'm not sure about Bleecker. I have a couple of them but I didn't wash them. Since they are newer bags I don't think the leather dye will bleed. Leather Honey is a good conditioner for these, it helps even out the color.

The lining is sewn into these bags so you can't pull it out to clean. Both of mine have pen marks in the bottom. I was afraid to clean it too vigorously in case it damaged the leather.

I've washed three Sonoma Nubucs with OK results. As Whateve said, brush while still damp. Best if they are in reasonable condition to start with. Not my favourite rehabs. I love them but in the future I would only buy bags that don't need major cleaning.

Can anyone tell me if fountain pen ink is easier to get out than ball point pen ink or does it spread more when wet? Thanks.
Depends on whether it's water soluble. I believe the early inks were, therefore it is possible to remove it when washing in water although it will likely spread, at least in the first instance.

If its alcohol based ink then it may also spread when wet and you will need to use alcohol to dissolve it and remove it, but this is not an easy task and it takes ages.

Can you post a pic of the item in question?

It's this briefcase. I think it's gorgeous and it's old enough that I thought perhaps the ink was water based. What do you think?

I rehabbed a bag that old with an ink spot. The ink spread when it hit the bath. The spot lightened but didn't come completely off, even with alcohol.

If you dunk it, it is very likely to become a bigger spot than it is now even if it becomes slightly lighter.

It's a lovely bag and I agree with Whateve that the ink is likely to spread if dunked. It would be better to cover it with acrylic paint or leather refinisher than risk making it worse. I'm always amazed at how much ink is actually in a spot, even a small one like this. You don't realize until you start trying to remove it and have gone through a roll or two of absorbent paper and there isn't a significant difference.

The bag would respond well to conditioning and the covered spot would be unnoticeable to most. It would look really nice I think.

Hi all! I'm going to chime in on the RIT dye issue. I have a Soho leather tote in light tan that I got at a local GW shop complete with stains splattered all over it (front, side, bottom, even a few on the back) in darker grayish brown. I tried cleaning it and nothing happened so I used RIT dye, the liquid version, in Cocoa brown and I love the new color. It took the dye well (I left it for about 2 hours while I watched a movie) and my only challenge was that the bag wanted to float. I ended up weighting it down with glass jars filled with the dye water but there are several lighter spots where the jars were resting on the bag. I also wasn't very aggressive at turning or swishing it since it was in my kitchen sink and I didn't want to get dye on my white couner tops. I'm actually thinking of repeating the process to see if it will even out those spots but this time using a large stock pot so I can put the bag in upright and just let the weight of the water inside the bag hold the bag down. The spots aren't gone but they sure aren't as noticeable. I could go darker with a dark brown or black but I have bags in those colors and I thought this color actually turned out really nice. Here are before and after...

Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful color!
Maybe we should start a dyed my bag thread!!

My first attempt at bathe and condition. Was a $5.00 lucky find on eBay so felt safe to use this as a test subject. I call her Little D. 2 Before photos and 2 after. Quick bath, 2 coats leather cpr, 2 blackrocks, (she felt dry and a little rough in random spots) and then finished with obenauf's to try and enrich the color. Very happy with how the scuff marks on the bottom disappeared.

Next, meet "Ivy." After a bath, leather cpr, blackrocks, obenaufs, anda little brasso she is done! The color on the finished bag is more even than in the photos. Maybe I should have given her a dip in some rit!

Before photos.

Ivy after. There is a strange bubbly spot on the bottom that I didn't notice before the bath. Oh well. Still lots of fun to do!
