I’m finished with my very first purse rehab. (The only thing I didn’t do was slightly ‘sand’ down the hardware, as Debi the Restorer does in her video. I felt my bravery hit a high at submerging a leather bag. I’m okay with that, lol.) Unfortunately, the lighting isn’t the best right now for picture taking, so you cannot really see how much this beauty just shines.

As soon as I bought this bag (for $13 at GW), I knew I would be fixing it for my oldest daughter who, as her gf says, loves everything Coach and vintage, although I know this isn’t old enough to be vintage, lol. Today is my girl’s 32nd birthday and it’s done. There was no hang tag, so I’m still looking for one. I didn’t have a custom one made just for her, though.

The best part of this rehab so far was seeing that Coach had this exact bag on the reLove tab two weeks ago for $500-600. The next best part will be seeing her face.

I would like to thank all of the experienced rehabbers who freely share all their advice, tips and tricks of the trade they’ve learned. My girl is gonna LOVE this.

Pretty!!!

Hello Coach rehabbers! I just purchased my first ever Coach bag, a 1996 Casino in British Tan. It is in very good condition but a bit misshapen so I put some hot towels inside and blew some hot air on the outside with the blowdryer (not directly of course, the bag was under a thick towel to prevent damage). The handle took shape quickly and we’ll see how the bag structure is after I remove the towels.

I do have a couple of questions for the experts here though, for this specific bag and colour. The leather feels wonderful, very buttery and supple and perhaps never treated with anything. For that reason I don’t want to dunk it (which would be my first time), and I want to tread carefully with any product I put on it.

My question is whether you think I should try to remove the small dark circular stains, whether I should clean and condition the bag to remedy the corner wear, and what with. There are also some light marks on the bag, I’m not sure if it is mold or what (the bag doesn’t smell musty, just almost like barnyard/tack gear). I did some research and saw that leather CPR is recommended, but that isn’t available in Canada. I already own Apple Leather cleaner and conditioner, but I have found that the conditioner does leave behind a bit of a residue.
The first shot are those light marks, I’m afraid to even touch this leather with anything to clean them off for some reason:

The second shot is the dark spot/stain:

The third shot is the corner wear and also more dark spots and stains:

None of these are very noticeable (and almost totally unnoticeable on camera so it seems, I can admittedly barely see anything in the photos ha ha), so I am tempted to not touch the bag with any product. Let me know what you guys think and sorry for the long post! Thanks in advance!

I’m not one of the experienced rehabbers obviously, however, I will offer up the comment that my bag had piping and spots on it that looked almost beige before I dunked it. I noticed that after each dunk and application of cleaner (I used CPR 3 times and Blackrock as my final conditioner), my ‘light’ spots became darker and more in line with the bag’s *sold* color.

I don’t believe it was a fluke because I spent three weeks or so reading everything I could find on here about submerging a bag, and I recalled someone saying that those steps would help restore the color.

It's a beautiful bag. If you want to be extra careful with it and know that your products are compatible, I'd use the Coach brand cleaner and moisturizer.

Sooooo here comes NIGHTMARE AT THE PLAZA! I bought this bag off depop, I’d already started the dunk when I should have been attempting to get my money back, but here I am. I have never rehabbed a bag before. Basically, this poor bag has been painted . The listing pictures and even closeup of the creed showed no paint, but when it arrived holy smokes! I have one photo of the creed upon arrival that shows the paint and how pretty much the bag looked, now I’m in the middle of a blood bath dunk and scrub fiasco. Appreciate any advice as I don’t know wtf I’m doing. Poor bag!

The bag looks to be British Tan. I'd soak in soapy water and scrub (gently) with a toothbrush. I think it will come off. Be on the lookout for what prompted the paint job in the first place. There may be a big ole ink stain under there or something. I had a gray basic bag with a horrible blue ink stain. I dyed it black, using leather dye, and it looks beautiful now. I think your bag will end up beautiful! After dunking, and some drying, use leather CPR to condition/moisturize.

Hello again everyone and thank you to those who responded! Just an update: I decided to use the hang tag as a test for my Apple Leather cleaner and conditioner and lo and behold, it seemed to work really well without leaving much of a residue. So I tried it also on the corners of the bag gingerly and was amazed to see the rubbed off colour come back about 90 percent or more! So I took a breath and cleaned and conditioned the whole bag. It looks and feels even more buttery than before! Can I just say I can see why people love vintage Coach leather?

It didn’t take the dark spots/stains out at all, but the marks are gone from the back and the corner wear looks much diminished. Success!

I think that is a Janice's legacy bag and those are from 1996... so it is old enough to be vintage.....
Did you use any paint or coloring on the edges and corners? I have some dried edges on some of my bags... haven't tried to rehab those yet

That looks like somebody had some leftover latex house paint and decided to match their vintage coach bag to the house. :confused1:
I recently learned there is a big difference between paint and dye for bags... apparently dye bonds to the leather somehow and paint sits on top? That looks like paint
