I haven't been doing this very long yet, and I think my results are part inexperience, part materials. I don't have a variety of conditioners and finishes yet, so I think for me that may be why my bags aren't yet reaching their full potential...
This definitely happened with the first bags I rehabbed. I didn’t want to spend money on products for a hobby that maybe I would quickly lose interest... but here we are, half a year later and still going strong! When I look on my earlier bags I notice all the things I could’ve done. I’m slowly “re-rehabbing” them. Only done one so far though! Haha.

Up until last year-ish ( and I started in the fall of 2016) I used Lexol leather cleaner, Leather Therapy restorer/conditioner, Obenauf’s Oil and Blackrock. I also used Lexol leather conditioner for light conditioning.
Lol when my 32 oz pump bottle of LT ran out I picked up CPR (late ‘18 ?). I also picked up Cadillac Supreme conditioner which I now use for light conditioning instread of Lexol conditioner.
I used a Saphir recolorant on a black Pocket Purse and Plaza large and a BT Compartment Bag.
I have enough Blackrock to finish off my Letter Brief. I will order Renapur.

I have several bags on the re-rehab list too!

Dear all,
I recently purchased a Madison Biltmore bag in red. It is in good vintage condition however it appears to trigger my asthma. I have cleaned the leather with leather CPR and the inside lining with diluted Dettol solution (also hovered the lining).
I am very sensitive to Secondhand books and always have to clean them and freeze them before I read them.
Surely I can't freeze a leather bag?
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I am very allergic to cat dander and I have also had strong reactions to second-hand items that must have belonged to cat owners.

I think that you need to give the bag a bath - I have successfully dunked Italian Coach Madison bags in the past and they came out very well. My only complaint is that they take long time to dry!

Here are before and after pics of 2 Italian Madison bags that I have dunked.

Even from the first bag I did to the current one I'm working on, I'm noticing things I have done differently (or could have done differently). It's a fun learning experience, but I also wish I did better by the bags I learned on. At least on the plus side I haven't spent a lot of money on a project yet.

I just bought a bottle of leather CPR! I'm using that going forward for now, but I'm certainly keeping an open mind on ordering more products if this hobby progresses (the way I think it might...). I'm going to definitely try reconditioning and buffing my court bag several more times to see what improvements that might make on it. And possibly do the same to my Lula bucket bag too...

Hi everyone,
I have a question about paint on a bag. The Devon that I’m attempting to touch up with a paint and cpr mix appears to have had the edges on the strap painted (like edgecoat on the newer bags). Is there a way to strip it out? If so, how?
Sorry if this has been asked before. I did a search but couldn’t find anything. Maybe I wasn’t searching the right key words. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Someone here recently reported that edge coat came off in warm/hot water.

I don't know if Dettol kills mold or pollen spores, although it kills bacteria and most viruses.

I would first wipe your bag down with a cloth dampened with white vinegar, inside and out.

Then, as long as the bag is thoroughly dry, I don't see why you couldn't put it in the freezer in a sealed bag. If it works for you on your books, it should work on the bag. Mold and pollen spores would be deactivated. Mold spores could re-activate if temperature and humidity became favorable for them.

Hi all, I just got this vintage bag in new/unused condition, but it does have a few scratches and dents from improper storage. I’m totally fine with this, but I was just curious if you all recommend I do anything, and if so, what products you recommend. I’ve never rehabbed a bag before but would be willing to try if it would help. Do dents even come out with dunking, conditioning, etc.? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I think you have to pick that stuff off, which is tedious. You could maybe try gently sending after to make sure you're down to raw leather. Do you have a photo? Maybe others have better suggestions.

I did once redo the edge-kote on a contemporary bag, and that's how I got the leather clean.

Thanks for your input! Sanding is a great idea! I don’t know why I didn’t think if they before.. though now that I’m taking another look at the bag I don’t know if it’s really salvageable since there is quite a bit of green from the verdigris. Here are some photos..

I have had to remove edge coat on the more modern classics when it was cracked and missing in areas.
I had to pick it off by hand which took forever and my fingers would get sore so I would leave it for a few days and get back to it. Some areas were stuck more securely than others and I would have to carefully pick at it with cuticle nippers to loosen it enough to get a hold with my fingernails to pull off the next bit. It worked for me but took a while.
I hope this helps you.
Thanks Transported. The paint (I think) on the strap is stuck pretty tightly on the strap but I will give it a try. I think most likely this bag is going to be a write off, or will have to be re dyed..

Wow congratulations. I have been looking for one of these for a while now! Yours looks gorgeous!
About the dents - I think dunking and conditioning help a little bit in terms of appearance but in my experience they have never fully come out.

Thanks Catbird9! I had dunked the bag in warm water a few times already so I think it might be paint on mine.
