Thank you!!
Hey, you are a master rehabber.
Thanks! I have made a lot of mistakes! It was a huge risk! But it worked out and I love the bag. It is black so I figured it would be safer than another color. Now that I know I love the style, I'm willing to pay more for another in a prettier color, but it probably needs to be in great condition. Nothing rehabs like vintage Coach.

Ugh. Considering a bag. It looked like it was in great condition.

Then I noticed a mark on the bag and inquired with the seller, and she said she'd take a look. After checking, she said their is a mark, and sent a closeup.

It's on the back, and it's shown in the images below.

If you were considering a bag that had a mark like this, would this make the bag a no for you?

I'm assuming it isn't fixable? (Any idea whether this is a cigarette mark?)

And any idea of whether I can likely get a deep red Willis in very good overall condition later, but without the mark?

This one is $125 (before shipping).

(If it's likely possible to find a deep red one later, in good condition, without the mark, paying more would be fine. I realize red doesn't age well, so I don't have a sense of whether this is the best that I can likely get. This one is 2002, Dominican Republic, in case that makes any difference at all.)

I'm kindly requesting your advice to help put me out of my misery debating right now about whether to get or pass.

It looks like the leather has been damaged there. At least it is on the back and is relatively small. But if it will bother you, you should wait. I think that is a good price for red.

Thanks :)

Happen to have a sense of what the market is like for these in red? Like, if I go up in price, would I be likely to find one in better condition, in this shade of red? (Lol, not holding you to it, but you've been watching these things for a long time. I've only been watching for a few months.) That's assuming I don't watch the marketplaces 24/7; I realize some bags get sold for great prices but within a few minutes.

Thanks

I actually haven't been looking for months. I really only look when I have a coupon or I decide I need something. You might find one in better condition. It depends on how long you are willing to wait. Why not eliminate dollar limits from your searches and see what there is?
Here is a brand new one, but it is more than double the price: https://www.tradesy.com/i/coach-wil...-never-used-red-leather-shoulder-bag/1812810/ It was made in China but I've had one made at the same time at the same factory and the leather was nice. I'm not sure this is a lot brighter than the one you were looking at. Sometimes they just look darker when they have been used.

@whateve Oh, and you mentioned scratch marks aren't a big deal, so assuming you wouldn't be concerned about these?View attachment 4429409
No that wouldn't concern me. The leather is going to get scratched from use. That's just the nature of this kind of leather.
@whateve ...I'm so sorry, I'd love to ask one more question if you have a chance. Do you think conditioner (Leather CPR / Blackrocks) would likely minimize the mark that's on the back of the bag?
It would probably darken it so probably would be less noticeable. It is always a risk, since you can't predict how the leather will react and you don't know what caused the stain. If it is damaged like I think it is, conditioner should darken it.

Hey guys! =) So, hoping to request more advice about purchasing.

I'm curious, what is the max amount you would spend for bags that you plan to dunk?

For bags that just could benefit from being reshaped and conditioned a bit, but otherwise looks very good, and you’re as confident as possible about the results.

$50 / $100 / $150 / $200 / $250 ?

When do you start to question whether to spend that amount on a bag that will be getting a bath? (Or is that even a consideration?)

(By the way, I’m not talking about Bonnie Cashin collectors pieces.)
If the bag is in good condition with promise of improving, I have spent around $55 shipped. I would say part of it is the thrill of the hunt. I would up my limit for a color or style that is hard to find, that would round out my collection. I haven’t spent more than $85 ( I spent that much for a red Pocket Bag, like new!) on a bag yet simply because I like to use my bags for everyday, if possible. Which in my world means coffee , pens , make up, etc. no matter how much I organize, the moment comes when I am in a rush and something goes rouge on me  So I can live with spending $85 at the most and doing something would be unfixable.
While I am by no means an expert, I have dunked (I think ) at least 2 dozen bags so I do have a comfort zone for what feels doable. So I am thinking, for a HG bag, that would be spending more time on a shelf, I could up my limit. For a bag for everyday use, I’ll stay with my limit of $85 ish, as I have plenty of bags to use already. Typically I’m spending under $40 on bags.

First of all, thank you. I must say, you don't have to provide advice like this, and I think it's amazing that you do.

Lol now we're back to 101 reasons that have made me pass on bags. It looks like there's an area with streaks, and I don't know whether that's a big deal...

Sometimes that is caused by the grain of the leather.

Vintage Pocket bag! I felt awkward using it at first, like I would stain it or wreck it in some way, lol. But as my sister says, is it a museum piece or do you want to use it?? You can tell I am getting relaxed with it because it is sitting on a curb, lol. Well, it is a very clean curb. Love the mixed tone fob with it.
Thank you so much!! That's very good to know!

Now someone posted using a product, Saphir recolorant creme called Surfine in #11 that got a nice result for red. I will likely pick it up when this needs help. For now I use Cadillac Supreme leather conditioner.
