What do you buff with? Also how do you apply CPR? Sponge or cloth? I can't figure out which one I like:)
I can't get CPR so I use Leather Therapy and squirt it into a small bowl then apply with a varnish sponge.

I buff with a shoe brush which I think is made of horsehair, and to answer a previous question, I buff between coats because I think it helps to work it into the leather and also because LT tends to bring stuff to the surface even after bathing so I brush it off before applying the next coat.

I use the small sponge paint brushes as well. For color refinish I use cosmetic sponges. They have a finer texture & won't leave ' brush' marks.
A horsehair brush & super soft cloth for buffing. It is wise to buff after each coat of conditioner because often after buffing you can determine wether or not it even needs another coat.

That's a good idea re the cosmetic sponge. I read somewhere that the lambswool applicators that come with some refinishers actually cause streaking because they don't produce an even application, so this is a great substitute.

With my limited experience, but wonderful mentoring from the expert rehabbers here, I've found I like using a horsehair blend brush (I happen to have a one from my dad's old shoeshine box!) and sometimes follow it up with a soft cloth.
I'm still experimenting with how to apply Leather CPR. Currently I like using a little soft sponge. I pretty much follow the instructions on the bottle--they say not to use a cloth. I've even used my fingers. You can really work it into the leather that way.

I've ALWAYS used my fingers for Leather CPR and Blackrocks. And I like using a horsehair blend brush to buff...or microfiber cloth works well too!

Hi rehabbers,
I've finished my saddle pouch (which I thought was British Tan but now I'm not so sure; posted query over on Authenticate thread) and after all my anxiousness about it I'm really pleased with the results!
Even though it lost that stiff glossiness from when I bought it, it really looks better now because it is obviously cleaner and the leather is softer and much more even-toned.
I'll post some before and after pictures below.
Thanks everyone for your help! This is my fourth bag and I'm quite addicted. :D

The first three are before pics. It wasn't in terrible shape.
The second three are the after pics. (I don't know how to comment in-between photo uploads.)

Lovely results...congrats! It really is fulfilling (and therefore of course, addicting) to see the difference you can make to a bag, isn't it?

Hey everyone don't forget there's the new Vintage photos and chat thread that Cameochi started. It would be great to see more pics of rehabbed bags there (and you won't get busted for chatting which keeps happening to me on the reference thread!)

Thanks for the heads up on this...I saw your post about this on the AT thread...I got busted for chatting too. It was weird...I keep a log of URLs for each thread I read...sort of a short cut road map. The Vintage thread was up to page 14, then when I went back after the bust, it was only up to page 9. Guess we weren't alone. I felt bad that I got smacked (no, not really) for just being exuberant and commenting on Cameochi's overwhelmingly beautiful Sheridans!

Oooooo, pretty! I think I have to add one of these to my wish list now. Great job vintageb!

I think it is going to last a long time. It is pretty difficult to clean paint off leather so I don't think it will disappear. It might wear off eventually but it is pretty easy to reapply, plus it lasts longer than just conditioner. I guess if you want a permanent solution, you could always use dye.
Yes, that makes sense. I first tried to add some acrylic paint with a eye shadow applicator. It worked well because the applicator doesn't leave strokes unlike brushes. But when it dried, the painted areas became visible - even though the color was the same, the surface was different from the leather surface - matte, not glossy. I think I'll stick with the moisturizer-paint mixture. Thanks, Whateve!

I am waiting anxiously for my black leather neglected bag, so I can start my first serious rehabbing.

I still need advice, if you ladies don't mind :smile1:

Dunk it first or spot clean first? Warm water, cold? Ivory soap for leather? For how long the bath?
Before completely dry, start applying CPR?
Buff between layers.
Use acrylic paint mixed with conditioner for corners.
Edge Kote for straps edges.

I am very grateful for all the great tips you ladies share.

The eye make up applicator for touch up paint, and the make up sponges are a great tip. I want to share in case that helps, that I found out in those Dollar Stores, (I imagine in any discount store), some make up brushes kits/packages, that have different sizes (on the small side) regular brush and sponge totally inexpensive, much cheaper than the artist brushes, and that work great for small areas.

Call the authorities - there's a naked stewardess in my basement, LOL! I just stripped her of her hardware and threw her in for a soak. Lots of verdigris hiding under the turnlock - I can only imagine what it looks like under her feet. I wish I could figure out how to give her a pedicure - any ideas?

Frankentote update: Still patiently waiting for her to finish drying and zap her back to life. The pockets are still damp. Have applied several coats of CPR and she is absorbing them instantly - she was very dehydrated.
