I just want to say thank you again, not only for your patience with this newbie, but with the great advice and tips through out the whole thread, I think I found a new passion! Bringing back to life neglected bags, old treasures or just mistreated. :smile1:

This was my very first (I thought simple and easy) rehab project. Thanks to your advice I think the leather looks much better, after I messed it up even more myself cleaning it with saddle soap and leaving a huge stain. I still have to find acrylic paint to fix my other mishap, trying to clean a pen mark under the flap and rubbing the pink color off, but the pen mark is still there :nogood:

Wow! That looks great!

Watermelon Frankentote update:

She is still pretty wet, but I have been taking advantage of the long drying time by gently stretching the leather below where the kiss lock will be. I think I can hide the top holes just fine since they punched them fairly close to where the kiss lock used to be, but there are two on the sides that are in a little far. I can't make it narrower because then the frame won't fit, but I think stretching will help. So far I've gained about an 1/8 of an inch!

She still stinks though :yucky:

Frankentote...hahaha! So fitting!

I've looked at that one a couple of times. I think it's some sort of oil-based stain, and that would be pretty hard to get out if it has been there for a while. With oil stains, the leather absorbs it and it spreads below the surface, so the stain is actually bigger than it appears, kwim? I am pretty brave, but I don't think I would try to tackle this one. :smile1:

And what is even more depressing about this type of stain on this type leather, they don't cover well should one decide to go that route. It sort of absorbs that too & can still be seen underneath. I hate oil almost as much as ink!

I wonder what would happen if you were to dunk the whole thing in oil? I really don't know what to after that, but..... Ok, maybe not, just a train of thought. Wash oil with oil? Hmmm....

The one thing good about this one is that it doesn't seem very faded. I agree that if it is an oil stain it would bleed through any type of coverup.

Thanks everyone. I'll give it a miss. If I didn't have to pay so much for shipping I might have. I'll keep waiting for what I really want - a red one!

Wow. Great job! Personally I like the leather that darker, warmer colour.

Hi, I'm a newbie to tPF and a newbie to rehabbing leather, especially Coach handbags, so please forgive me if this has already been asked/answered.

How would I go about repairing something like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/COACH-Vinta...633?pt=US_CSA_WH_Handbags&hash=item27dfd38421

- the 8th photo, damage on the piping - ?

TIA
:smile1:
There are several options. Basically, you need to fill the hole and then make a smooth cover over the top. You can buy a leather filler or use something that serves the same purpose, and then cover with edge kote or paint. I have one that I repaired using dimensional fabric paint. It puffed up and filled the hole.

Thanks, Whateve, for the tips. I appreciate it greatly.

Interesting...technique, too, does it stay in place or will you have to re- repair it at some point?

Nice bag. The hole is small so should repair easily. It's a pity Edge Kote is only available in black, brown and tan, but Whateve's suggestions will do the job. Please post pics when you've fixed her.

It feels pretty permanent. I have no idea how well it will wear.

Whateve, did you paint over the puffy paint or was it enough on it's own?

Oh, had I saved everything that's come falling out of my vintage rehabbers (and others) I would have an entire basket full. Candy, pills, pens, tampons, receipts, wads of hair (gross)
odds & ends of jewelry. An adorable pair of puffy heart earrings that turned out to be authentic Tiffany! I never cease to be amazed anymore over the trash people carry around & leave in their purses.

That's crazy! The owner of the earrings was probably looking all over for them!
So far the only thing I've found of interest was the original Coach tag and the price tag (from a military exchange store!) tucked into the inner pocket.
