What a shame! The lining on these bags is very easy to clean. Isn't that a patent leather bag? If so, that makes it even easier. You can pull the lining out and wash it in the sink with dishwashing soap and water. Don't be afraid to scrub. Rinse thoroughly, wring out, then place on a towel to dry. I've washed many bags. Any time I buy a used bag on ebay, I always wash the lining this way. They always come out great.
Thank you so much for the reply! Yes it is. So that's all you have to do and it won't hurt the bag? That's great! Maybe I can take it with me on a trip this weekend after all!

You're welcome! I've never had a problem. The lining is nylon so it is safe to wash. The patent leather is resistant to water as long as you don't soak it. Let me know how it comes out.

I happened upon two Baxter bags recently. One in British Tan that was already in great shape, and one in black that needed reshaped and spruced up a bit. I've never been a huge satchel person, but I just love these bags. I just finished the rehab of the black one tonight. She is missing her hangtag, so I dressed her up with a scarf.

Here's a before and after of the black one and a shot of the pair.

2 beautiful bags...the black one looks new again...nice job...congrats!

Hi, I have a question. If ink is so hard to get out what would be the outcome if I touched up some faded piping on a black purse with Indian ink? It's supposed to be indelible which in this case would be a good thing. Has anyone ever used this? Thanks.

if it is a match , or wouldn't look obvious or odd, I'd say go for it. It would make sense that something like that might work. Strangely, I had a seemingly knowledgeable employee at my local Tandy Leather, say that an already tanned purse that you try to "re-dye" won't hold its dye as strongly as the original dye that was put into the leather because of whatever process they used to get it there... I cant' remember his exact words on why, but you could have knocked me over with a feather when he said that honestly, based on its chemical make-up that one would be better off touching up a bag with a sharpie for permanence. now, I AM NOT SUGGESTING anyone do this , (or do it at their own risk, LOL). My first reaction to his saying that was "hell no!!" but.... it makes a bizarre kind of sense.

I would just be afraid that it wouldn't match. I tried to touch up a spot once on black jeans with a sharpie and it didn't match. When I use paint, I can't tell if it is the right color until it dries. I like that I can wipe it off and try again if it doesn't work. If I wait too long, it seems to become permanent, which is a good thing when I get a good match. I know the purists don't like to do this, but I think just for a touch up on worn piping, it is good to use something permanent as long as it looks natural.

Can you test it on a hidden part to see how it looks?

Gorgeous! I love Baxters. They are so cute.

Another question, I'm about to take the leap to rehab a city bag New York era. I am waiting for the conditioner to arrive because I can't find Soilove or Blackrocks here in Canada. When you talk about stuffing the bag with towels, etc, to reshape when still wet, do you just scrunch them in any old way, or do you fold them to keep it even? Also, do you use ratty old towels (I usually give mine to the SPCA) in case of color transfer? Thanks.

I use ratty old towels. I usually fold or roll them to make a smooth surface. Then sometimes, I'll stuff smaller rags into the parts that need more plumping. For a very structured bag, I've used cardboard wrapped in a towel.

I have a major mildew problem. I didn't notice in the bag before I washed it but you can see spots in the seller's pictures. I think washing it made it a lot worse. The entire flap is covered inside and out with mold spots. It looks like it goes all the way through. The flap is very stiff and crunchy. I rewashed the bag with oxyclean and put it in the sun. I believe the mold is probably dead but the spots and crunchiness are still there. I put one coat of Leather Honey on it because it says that it resists mildew but the spots didn't absorb the conditioner. I'm sanding the suede of the inside flap in an attempt to soften it. What else can I do? The spots appear to be a little recessed on the surface of the bag.

Wow, those are really nice! What a cute bag. I didn't know it's name was Baxter. I want one of these little satchels now.

You should definitely get one! If you watch, you can find decent deals on them on ebay. I got a great deal on the black one. (I totally overspent on the british tan one, but I figured it evened out.) The black one rehabbed great. It also holds more stuff than you would expect it to - I think because the base is pretty wide. The shoulder strap is also great - definitely worth finding one if you can.
