Honestly I don't know what mine looked like before it shredded. I wasn't paying close enough attention. The zipper caught on the fabric and when I tried to fix it, that is when it shredded.

Were you able to salvage the bag? Zipper catching on fabric is definitely a bad sign and I'll try to look out for it. It happens to one of my coats and every time it happens, I fear it'll be the last time.

After I emailed the seller about the flaws, she agreed to refund my money so I'm sending the bag back. I'm a bit bummed since I really wanted a basic bag but will note it as a lesson learned. Though I'm not sure if it would have turned out differently if I had pointedly asked the seller about piping scuffing and such as she said she did not notice the flaws. Maybe questions would have her examine the bag again but I doubt it.

I don't think you should have to ask a seller pointed questions in order to discover an item's condition. They are supposed to disclose all flaws. A little scuffing might have been overlooked, but holes like that are obvious. It is a shame you have to wait to find another rehab project.

I haven't done anything to my bag yet. I think the zipper can be replaced. I just haven't expended the energy to find someone to do it. I sent it to Coach and they returned it without fixing it.

There is a black italian coach calfskin and pigskin tote on ebay and the auction ends in about 40 minutes. i can't post the link but search for the item number 111055110063. There are zero bids and the starting bid is 29$ with 10$ shipping. Good luck!

You're right. I shouldn't have to but I find that many auctions lack details. I wonder if it's just laziness when people say "good condition" to describe the bag instead of being specific. I guess I was too impatient before and have learned to be patient in finding a bag in decent condition for my rehab experiments. Maybe I have been influenced by too many successful rehab projects here and just kept seeing the "potential" for the ones I came across.

Bummer that Coach couldn't help you. I'm just surprised that they can't fix their own bags but maybe that's asking for too much these days. Zippers are tricky so it's definitely good to wait until you find the right person who can do it for you. Would be a shame to damage the bag any further.

I was really disappointed in Coach. It is a NYC bag and I wonder if they figured it was too old to worry about. I wish they had given me the zipper, though, so I would have the right kind when I do find someone to do it.

As far as finding a bag to rehab, I wouldn't get anything too old. The bags from the 90's or early 2000's, except those from the Lightweights collection, are the easiest IMO. My bags from this era have gorgeously soft thick leather.

Yes, even the zipper would have helped. The age might have played a role. But then again, didn't they believe these products would last a lifetime?

Thanks for the advice on the years for the bags. I've definitely been too ambitious since most of the bags that I've looked at are likely from the 80s. This definitely opens up more possibilities as gorgeously soft thick leather sounds wonderful!

My latest rescue from Goodwill for 99 cents. Saw it laying on the floor under the purse display. It just needed a good cleaning and conditioninig.

Introducing the 2003 Mini Hippie ( more pictures in the Auth. thread)

Just found this thread!! just what I need. I have two vintage NYC coach in need of rehab. They are both in good physical condition without deep scratches, but the black has worn off in many areas and some areas are browinsh and icky. I have started to use kiwi black leather dye on one and so far so good. How would I seal this dye? should I heavily moisturize prior to sealing? the bag is dry... I am kind of winging it so far. I did look on some leather forum and they suggest acrylic resolene for sealing.. apparently mixing with lots of water gives a great seal and just a bit of sheen... but that site is for leather crafters.....so not sure one would use same technique for a bag. I just want to make sure dye is sealed so if you get caught in a downpour, your clothes do not turn black!!!! Anyone been through the dyeing and sealing process?

I don't know if anyone here has any experience with that dye. Usually a bath and conditioning is all that is necessary for a black bag. Please post pictures of your results.

I don't remember who it was that had verdigris stains on leather. Did you ever figure out how to treat these? I have a bag with that problem now. I have tried vinegar and alcohol so far.

oK SO I HAVE A PICTURE THAT I TOOK OF THE BAG I AM REFERRING TO... BUT I DID NOT TAKE A GREAT ONE... THE BAG IS LAYING DOWN. IT DOES NOT SHOW A GREAT VIEW OF THE BROWNISH AREAS, but if the pic enlarges, you can see them. THEY ARE NOT REALLY STAINS, BUT MORE LIKE WHERE THE COLOR WORE OFF AND THOSE AREAS ARE BROWNISH. but the brown was also in the areas that are still all black. OTHERWISE THE BAG IS IN GREAT SHAPE. SO, I SCRUBBED IT DOWN WELL WITH A MAGIC ERASER AND MILD CLEANSER--IVORY SOAP. I LET IT DRY AND THEN I USED KIWI LEATHER DYE... . AND NO A BATH JUST CLEANED IT UP, THERE IS LOTS OF COLOR MISSING ON THIS BAG. . SO, THE COLOR lOOKS FINE, ALTHOUGH IT DOES NEED ANOTHER COAT IN SOME AREAS. HOW WOULD YOU SEAL THIS... I HAVE HEARD OF RESOLENE WHICH MANY SAY IS GREAT, BUT I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS REdYED A BAG AND SEALED IT?? i HEAR IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO SEAL AFTER DYEYING AND MINK OIL IS NOT A SEALER, CONDITIONER IS NOT A SEALER.... I am excited for this as it is taking the dye really well but it is very flat.. no luster defintely needs some sealing and some moisture. THe resolene supposedly is high sheen but if you mix with lots of water that reduces... I am frightened.. anyone done this before?? i WILL POST PICS OF THE DYED BAG TOMORROW.
