I"m afraid to try and dunk AWL ... tho' I think someone on tpf has done it before. But any reading I'd done on other pages about AWL ( just random googling) has said that this leather is designed to resist water, but I get the impression its not meant to be saturated. ? I now need to go back and re-read some of this stuff because I'd like to be sure for now that I know more about leather and rehabbing it

Thanks, Jess. I always appreciate your input, and you are one of my rehab heroes, BTW!

I remember hearing from a dept. store employee that their Dooney rep actually dunked a D&B in an aquarium as a demo.

I have one but I am not planning on dunking it because it has a paper label that I don't want to destroy.

Yes, I would feel the same way. The one I'm thinking about dunking is a sling, fir or dark green with tan, and a north/south bag so it's difficult to clean the bottom and get a good view of the surface that needs cleaning, which is the very bottom. The stains aren't that bad and I think they would wash off. And it's always nice to have a second-hand bag that is really clean! No odor that I can smell. Ever since I started rehabbing, I automatically want to dunk.

Mine looks almost new except that it looks like a pen exploded inside. I have no idea what I am going to do about that since I can't really paint suede. I bought it at a thrift shop for a rehabbing challenge but so far, I haven't done anything.

Same old rhetorical question, I know....WHY would anyone put a pen (unless it's in a container) in a nice bag? Or nail polish? :bagslap:

Has anyone had success dunking a Dooney? The old school AWL?

Yes, I have! It came out fine. This is the link from the auction when I sold it. (i hope posting a link to an old auction is ok. I dont have anything currently for sale, soooo...).

The black leather cleaned up great. I wasnt able to do much about the tan leather. It didnt cleanup very well. I used Leather Therapy Oil on the black leather. When I got this bag, it was flat and warped! It got its shape back easily.

Good Afternoon,

Does anyone have any suggestions for rehabbing a Dakota handbag made in Italy? It is a little dirty, but could use reshaping as well.

Please see pictures in link below.

Let me know.

Thanks in advance.

I recently rehabbed this exact bag! This was my second Dakota, and I have to say, not sure if it is the leather or just my luck, but they both were extremely dry! Here is what I did:
-cleaned inside with wet washcloth, interiors were in good condition
-cleaned outside with Lexol Leather cleaner
-Did several coats of Leather Therapy Oil
-polished hardware, touched up edging (there is a TON of edging on these Dakota's)
-Both were STILL dry so I then used Obenauf's oil, not the heavier LP
-Finished with Blackrocks, to avoid any build up in the crevices on box leather, I carefully rubbed the tiniest amounts between my two fingers, applied very lightly, then went over the area with a clean toothbrush
-On the bridle leather trim, you can just rub in the Blackrocks as normal

FINISHED! :D

Here is the one I did:
