I think I posted about this before...it's late and I might be repeating myself. I bought a Soho Waverly tote from somebody who also bought it secondhand but unused. I steeled myself and cut off the tag - the leather is pristine and I have conditioned it twice with Leather CPR to try to soften up the handles, which feel almost like brand-new belts, hardly any give at all.

I did notice that behind the interior pocket, there is a stripe of dry glue and/or cardstock. The pocket is sewn in securely, but that glue bothers me because I'm worried it might flake off with use. I think I should just go for it and use the bag.

I remember somebody on this thread saying that the older Coach bags don't have any kind of glue that would dissolve with a bath...I'm almost wondering if I should just dunk the bag to help it revert to its original shape. It's not really misshaped now, just kind of...blah after being in a box for who knows how long.

I wish I had fewer misgivings about using new bags.

I hate using new bags too. I don't want to be the one that dirties it. I think I feel the same way about a lot of things. It is like when you get a new car. It is almost a relief when you get the first scratch on it because then you don't have to be as careful anymore.

I am not afraid to dunk anymore. I have gotten bags that are in perfect condition except for being misshapen and I am so glad that I dunked and reshaped them. I think you should go ahead and dunk. What color is your tote?

Hello all! Chowlover2 told me to pop over here and post the Coach canvas tote I picked up at a thrift store a few weeks ago. It is a bit crusty, but for $3 I couldn't pass it up! I'd love to get some ideas from all of you experienced rehabbers on how to clean it. Thanks so much!

I've had no problems with canvas totes in the washing machine. It doesnt always prove a miracle cure for all the dirt, but it does a great over-all improvement quite often. I generally pre-treat the spots and if its light colored I'd used a detergent with color safe bleach and even some Oxi-clean or whitener of some sort. Others may have thoughts on this part of it.

Thanks Jessi! I've been going through the thread and am still flabbergasted that we can actually put purses in the washing machine! I'm pretty bold about washing Dry Clean Only clothing, but never would have considered a purse!

A few questions - in the bottom there is a stiffener - possibly cardboard covered in canvas - would that be okay in the washing machine?

Would I put it on a low agitation cycle? My machine has a hand wash setting. Thanks so much!

hmmm. none of my Coach bags have had what seemed like a stiffener except old bags stiffened with additional leather. Old Coach bags never would use a flimsy material to stiffen, but the newer made in China stuff might-I am not sure. I wish there was someone with an answer to what material was used as the stiffener. Based on your photos, I think you will be ok. I doubt its cardboard, but If it's cardboard, the "brown" tone might slightly leech a bit of a yellowing color into the light colored bag at the bottom during the drying process. A darker bag wouldn't matter. I've still washed other name brands with the cardboard as an insert and it survived the trip through the machine but occasionally did discolor the bottom some. I've never had the bag come out looking worse than the dirty bottom that it originally had though. I' imagine it's fine, and that they probably just use additional thick layer of canvas inside of the bottom. I washed the bag I am posting here-- in the machine. It maintained its bright coloring (except for the edge rubbing/fading that the previous abusive owner put her through that washing wouldn't fix anyway). This bag was a mess --and I still have lots of work to do on her but as you can see she survived the machine ok. And the bottom is a thicker canvas but doesn't feel like a stiff board has been put in, just canvas. So not sure if it can be used as a comparison to yours. I just use the gentle/delicate cycle and I put the bag inside of a large pillow case and ran it that way.

I just looked at your purse's photos again, and I just have one other concern. I washed a nylon white hampton tote that had the "natural" brown leather edges, and I had some problems with the edge dye coming off onto the white bag. I ended up having to use a Tide to go Pen and a white soft cloth to "rub out" the dye from the purse. The bag eventually looked wearable, and definitely was CLEANER. I'll see if I can find photos of my before and after of the Hampton. Again, it was the nylon feeling material and I don't know if yours is canvas or nylon. or if it matters.
found some. ( Bad photography unfortunately)- this wasn't something I'd planned to hang onto or post here, but it might help you and others dealing with light colored bags with edge dye possible issues:
Before shots are of the bag after washing. Dye ran down as you can see. The dye on this bag was a british tan color
After shots are after spending some time with a Tide to go Pen. It's not perfect but was much improved and I'd have been willing to carry it (I'm not a perfectionist)

I have gotten some new rehab projects. Yay! When this one arrived, DH said it looked like it was 100 years old and should be thrown away! The second picture is drying after her bath! I was surprised at how much color ended up in the water. I also washed a green bag that really bled. Then I washed a black bag from the same era as the green one, and it didn't release any color at all!

This before and after just made my day! There is nothing like doing a project and getting HUGE results....so satisfying. Boy, wouldn't the previous owner Flip to see this now. It looks awesome, and I cannot wait to see the finished product.

I am not really a rehabber compared to other people on here but I just had to say I also just found this identical purse at a thrift store last night! Except it was the pink version w/brown lining. Mine wasn't as dirty so I just used soap and water and all the stains/dirt on the outside came off. I hope you get it clean:smile1:. (PS. I had it authenticated and Hyacinth said the name was a Hamptons Market Twill Small tote.)

How about a color catcher sheet in the washer? Do you think it would pick up any errant dye?
