Thank you! Your plan and approach is exactly what I was considering! I'll need to purchase the Blackrock and Obenauf's, but that's about all I'd need.

Now, I do have a few questions, being completely new to this and everything (so I apologize if some of my questions sound silly!). When bathing the bag, how long do you think I should leave it in the water (warm water?) for? I assume I will leave it on one side for x amount of minutes and on the other side for x amount of minutes. Also, should I wait for the bag to dry completely before applying Blackrock? I'm assuming the best way to dry the bag is to (as others have said) fill it with towels and let it sit to maintain the shape (correct me if I'm wrong!). Finally, with the Obenauf's, should I wait a certain amount of time between applications? And, with applications, is there a certain method to applying the Blackrock/Obenauf's? Pardon all the questions!

I wouldn't worry too much about loss of color. If you are worried, you can use cooler water. You can fill your sink full enough to totally submerse the purse, using Dawn or another dishwashing liquid. Before you dunk, note where the trouble spots are so you can give those spots a good scrubbing. If the water turns green, don't worry as you probably won't lose enough dye to make a difference. I have had some purses come out brighter after dunking. You can leave the bag in the water as long or as short as you want but you need to leave it long enough to get soaked all the way through so it will dry evenly. The dirtier it is, the longer you may want to soak it. The dunking will even out the water stains, so that should be much improved. The black mark on the front is from the snap and I think you might have trouble getting that to go away. The scratches will be camouflaged when you apply conditioner. Unlike most everyone else, I don't necessarily think that Blackrocks is the best conditioner for this job. It depends on what it looks like after the bath. If the color is fairly even, then I would prefer to use Leather CPR. It doesn't darken like Blackrocks and you will want to preserve that gorgeous color.

Yes, you would let it dry completely before you condition. Stuff with towels to get it to dry in the perfect shape. You can change the towels once they get soaked to speed the drying.

Thank you for the advice! Now, when I bathe the bag, what should I use to scrub the trouble spots, and how delicately/vigorously should I treat the spots? The dark mark in the front center is definitely from the snap, but I'm not particularly worried about that. I would say the light (water) mark on the back, the darker marks underneath the flap, and the small darker marks on the bottom of the bag are the most troubling areas; I will likely focus my attention there.

I'll probably bathe the bag tomorrow after work, then begin drying it, and I'll wait for it to dry fully before I post the "during" photos, so hopefully everyone will help me determine what kind of leather conditioner would be best suited for the job. I'm assuming the leather will appear dark for a while after the bath, so I don't think I'll be able to notice any significant changes until after a few hours (at least). I was about to purchase Blackrock on eBay, but I'm glad I checked here first! Is Leather CPR something I can purchase in a retail store? Would I still need to use Obenauf's?

Thank you!

I've never used Obenauf's. It is a waterproofer recommended by docride, who has a lot of experience in rehabbing. I can't tell you if it is necessary.

I've gotten Leather CPR at Bed Bath and Beyond. You could try that first. Blackrocks is more difficult to use. I have only used it for the really old New York bags that have a great deal of color variation due to age. I have a New York bag that is orange and I didn't use Blackrocks because I didn't want to take a chance that I would lose the gorgeous color and I don't think it needed it.

You can be fairly vigorous in scrubbing, but you don't want to use anything that will add more scratches to your leather. Although, in one case, when I had a bag that was in terrible shape, I actually sanded off the spots and it came out fine. I did redye that bag. I'm thinking that the water stains won't require much scrubbing. Just getting wet should work those out. If there any grease spots, then extra soap will help on those. It is helpful to know what caused the spots. If you have any ink stains, those should be treated before you soak.

Welcome to Rehab! I recently rehabbed a bag like yours, but British Tan - bag twins! You've already received a lot of really good advice, just thought I'd add my two cents worth...

(There is also a link in the post to the "before" pics on the Authenticate This...thread.)

You will probably discover that the dark area on the front flap may improve with a bath, but will likely remain a little a darker. I'm a big fan of Leather CPR (try Tuesday Morning if you have one...much cheaper than Bed Bath and Beyond, at least in Florida!) and I apply it generously when the bag is still a little damp. Depending on how the bag feels after the first application, I may repeat it the next day. Then after another "day of rest" I finish with Blackrocks (read the product labels for directions for use), and usually buff with a brush.

I wish you good luck with your first rehab...and hope you find it as rewarding (and addicting) as the rest of us here. Keep reading and asking questions... we're all here to help!

Hyacinth authenticated my brown Bleeker Bag #4153 a few weeks ago. http://forum.purseblog.com/coach-shopping/authenticate-this-coach-694619-747.html#post22054197

Time has flown over the last few weeks, as my graphic design business has suddenly (thank heaven!) gotten crazy busy! And left me little time to rehab :(

This bag was in pretty good condition to begin with, just needed to be reshaped, so I did my usual warm Dawn Extra Strength bath, scrubbed inside and out with a toothbrush and rinsed well. Stuffed her with towels to dry and used Leather CPR while still damp. This was my first experience using Brasso on the buckles, polished with my new-favorite Presto power buffer.

I did a little touch up on the bottom with acrylic paint mixed to match. (Sorry, no time, no pic of the bottom!) Finished her off with Blackrocks and buffed the leather with my horsehair blend brush. Much improvement as far as shape goes...nice, shiny buckles and I’m happy with my results!

Just beautiful!! I love this bag style a lot!

Giving a bath to a lined bag isn't usually my first choice but I have done it several times without any problems. At the link below are pics of a dark brown soho flap bag with tan lining that I dunked. The first 2 pics in the album are "after" pic and the other are before. This bag was in much worse shape than yours but it came out okay. Good luck!

Thanks a bunch, that bag turned out wonderfully by the way!

Thanks for the advise ladies! I ordered some conditioner from eBay and as soon as it gets her Ill dunk the bag and post after pics! :)
--Any advise on a RED bag? Red lining? can I dunk red without it fading?? Just wondering

Red bags are tricky! I recently rehabbed 3 red/plum bags. I dunked them all and they came out fine (link below) but none of these are lined. Can you post pics of your bag?

Hi ladies!! I've been looking through this read for help on rehabbing my bag.
So I'm thinking a wash with dawn for the outside, but what do you guys think for the handles? It's like really dark spots. Oh, and I just wanted to make sure that the inside of the bag is totally safe to put in a bath? I have another bag with the same inside and would like to make it smell a little better with a bath too.

Cute bag! I would give it a bath to clean and remove/reduce the water spots. When it is dry I would use blackrocks conditioner to help even out the color. Good luck!

I love this bag! I have never had any problems bathing unlined bags. In fact, the early New York bags came with instructions to clean by "scrubbing with a mild soap, such as Ivory or purse Castile....work up a good, thick lather. Scrub one panel at a time, making sure to go over the entire bag uniformly. Rinse suds off thoroughly under running water." The handles will probably remain a little darker than the rest of the bag. I haven't been able to clean handles like this completely as they have absorbed oils from being carried.

I dunked a red bag that had black lining. It didn't fade although the water did turn red. It didn't come out looking much better than it went in. The creed patch absorbed a ton of water and when it dried, the words were almost completely obliterated.
