I thought this analyst view was kind of spot on - comparing this to when JC Penny tried this.

That is scary that Coach is being compared to JCP. I don't think they are quite there yet. What I love about all these analysts is they say Coach shouldn't do this and shouldn't do that but offer no insight on what they think Coach should do. Before someone points out that they are analysts and not CEOs I get that, but I would still be interested in hearing some suggestions from the talking heads. Curious if they have some of the same suggestions we do. Funny how the article called out the siggy bags and Coach says they are "moving away from siggy" but have resurrected the siggy lining.

Someone brought up that most people do not know the difference between MFF and FP. And they are right. So let's say Joan comes to the office with a Coach leather bag. It is MFF. She does not know it, her office buddies don't know the difference. And let's say Joan's bag has that plasticky feel that some MFF bags have. Now the office buddies are surprised that Coach quality has "gone down". So office buddy sees Coach bags on the website for $400, $600 etc. She thinks back to Jane's bag and does not think a Coach bag is worth that price and passes on it.

They seriously have a perception problem. I have been saying for years that they need to name their MFF something different like See by Chloe etc. They will never rebuild the full price brand until they do this.

This is so true!

Coach can never get back to where it was a few years ago. There are so many mid-range brands now and the US market is really glutted. Women are also owning/using fewer bags than a few years ago before the housing bubble burst - hence the plan to further make Coach into a "lifestyle" brand. But the younger generation doesn't have the same view of the brand, nor the disposable income, so why will they want to pay a premium for a brand name their moms and grand moms carry? It's like GM trying to foist Buicks on customers under 70, lol!

I think you are correct and I believe Stuart Vevers is trying to change this.

+1
I agree with this! Coach is just too tired right now and there are too many other brands for people to move too along with the fact that people just aren't buying like crazy anymore. People are making do with what they already have and if they do buy something they've moved on to MK or Kate Spade. Coach is just out right now because everyone is just plain tired of seeing it everywhere. Even I am and I love Coach.

I will continue to buy coach as long as the price is right for ME but at a discount. Of course. Lololololol. Sad or not. I aint payin FP, I dont roll like that. They can smoke all that stuff they want. I know their games. Lololol

Perhaps it will be good to have the twice annual sales at Coach without the bags going to the Outlets. Frankly, I hate to pay almost full price and someone say I got mine for a little over $100 or so. Good for them but bad for me and for Coach's relationship with their customers. An example is Marc Jacobs who has fabulous bags. On his site now there is a 70% off on all his high end bags made in Italy and the quality is wonderful. It started at 40% and increased to the 70% toward what must be the end of the sale. It's incredible to get over $2000.00 retail of bags for $700. Maybe Coach will do that. I have read where his bags are soaring in price next year as well as other high end bags so I will rule those out based on what I've seen so far in the Fall 2014 previews.

Even I know They crazy. They my first love !!!!!

Mine too! I remember when my Mother gave me my first Coach bag when i left for college. I treasured that bag and the quality was so excellent I carried it for many years. It was a big deal then and still is to me because I am sure my parents sacrificed to give me that bag.

That's what they should have done with the name POPPY....use that as the factory bags and leave the boutique bags as Coach. I think this is when Coach sort of went down hill with the Poppy collection, bright colors and patterns for the much younger buyer. They are obviously doing a 360 since that time, or trying to.

Someone made a similar comment at the bottom of the CNBC article.

This is a great point. Although maybe the people that question the quality aren't the customers they are going for. With the new designs, maybe it is enough to differ tainted the brand to the consumer who would pay higher prices for a bag.

I do think it would be a wise business move to call the two types of bags different names, however, people thinking they are the same thing is exactly what spurred their success at the outlets. They are counting on it.

Either way they go, there is risk. At this point, doing nothing seems more risky. At least people are talking about them. LOL. There is no bad press???
