Silence of the Lambs was on the other day and I watched for the purse, but also because it is such a perfect film. I wound up watching the whole thing. The bag is definitely a British Tan coach city bag, but it is impossible to catch a decent clear shot of it. Only got pics from behind/side views. This is the best I could manage. photo (1).JPG

I like how the city bag is always on competent, strong women in films. (bag typecasting )

Not sure anyone has broached this - but since I have been acquiring and carrying vintage Coach bags, I keep spotting them in films that I have seen loads of times... but somehow missed. And a few new films. Have you?

I'll start:
Ghostbusters 2, opening scene - Sigourney Weaver is carrying a city bag
Baby Boom - Diane Keaton has I believe a fold over top coach bag near the beginning of film - the name escapes me
Take Care - Leslie Bibb's character has a mahogany city bag in the ending scene. (small film, slow to start but worth it. On Netflix)
Also grabbed a pic of the mahogany city bag in "Take Care" (Netflix) on Leslie Bibbs character. photo 2.JPG

Thanks, these are great captures! Someday I'm going to have to watch Silence of the Lambs again when I can get up the nerve. That movie gave me the heebie jeebies for months!

I've always thought that Jodie Foster carried a City Bag in Silence of the Lambs too. However, since becoming a vintage Coach nerd , I'm thinking it's actually a Compartment Bag #9850. You can see the difference in the two captures above. Jodie's bag is smaller (befitting her petite 5'3" stature), with a more rectangular shape, and it has a gussetted pocket under the flap. The front pocket has its own piping, which you can see along the side of the bag. That bag looks great on her!

The larger City Bag has a pocket there too, but it's not gusseted and is sewn into the piping. The bag has slightly rounded corners.

I don't think that is a city bag. It looks like it has an extra pocket under the flap. It might be a compartment bag #9850. It's about the right time period.

I had written a post and forgot to press enter! When I came back, I saw you had said exactly what I was going to say.

Looking at it again, and your examples, I think you are both right about the compartment bag - the flap is much more squared off than the city bag, which curves. Also forgot that Jodie is teeny tiny, so a city bag would be huge on her.

This thread is making me add bags to my want list

Tonight while watching the 1992 thriller Sneakers, I spotted this cute Coach bag carried by Mary McDonnell. Does anyone recognize it?

Yes, I think it is a Lightweights Cafe bag #4111. I don't have a catalog picture but here is one I used to own.

Good catch!

Thank you. Sweet little bag.

The purse even has a small part in the movie when the voice-activated toy dog knocks it off the table...an important plot point! This was a fun "hacker" movie with an all-star cast including Robert Redford, Ben Kingsley, Sidney Poitier, Dan Aykroyd, and River Phoenix. Two thumbs up!
