Coach And Kate Spade May Be Merging - Declining Sales All Around

Honestly? Kate Spade is one of the relatively few brands I refuse to purchase, for personal reasons. If they merge, I will not give any profit or monetary supposed from myself, to Spade, so I guess I would no longer buy new Coach. It would be a bummer, but it would just be what I had to do. I think it's a line I won't cross.

I actually haven't bought much new Coach lately anyway. The embellishments are way too much for me. I did get a butterscotch Rogue, and love the look of it. It's just too much bag for me though. I've used it once. Daughter loves it, and I will hold onto it for when she would need bigger bags for college. (Four years away now, so not stretching things too far.)

Your comments intrigue me and I'm hoping you will share why you won't give money to KS? I completely understand if you don't wish to disclose your reasons....

I have 2 Kate Spade bags from a few years ago that I really like. However, I just bought a Maise last summer (their most popular style which they are discontinuing) and the quality had gone done significantly from the Maise I bought a few years earlier. It felt plasticky and cheap. I also don't like how they add outlet bags to their online sales. Those who are not in the know would not be aware that they are buying an outlet only bag. I have not bought Coach for a while. The prices have gone up so much that bags I like seem to be in the $700 price range. And when they go on sale still paying close to $500. I prefer the $300-$400 range for Coach (think Madison Sophia) but the bags in that price range now are cheap looking.

KS prices don't match the quality of the bags imo. Their stuff always seems to go on discount elsewhere somewhat fast so I never want to buy anything full price. I love the new T-Rex crossbody they have, but the price tag seems too high for what it is. I hope Coach does not merge with them.

When I saw the Kate Spade t-rex, I thought they copied Coach, but it is pretty cute.

I am in agreement with a lot of the other posters. The KS prices are just too high. I love the whimsy but everything is just too much. Quality has definitely gone down. I have a very old pair of KS shoes that were made in Italy. They just don't make their shoes like that anymore. I have the old typewriter bag too, but again, what they are putting out now is just not the same quality. I much prefer Coach.

Where I am, (Texas) Kate Spade shops have opened up *inside the grocery store*. True, it's the Super HEB, where you can get all sorts of things besides groceries. But still...it's the grocery store. When I saw it, I said "Wow...either HEB is really moving up in the world, or Kate Spade is really moving down".

So, yeah. If you're trying to convince a potential customer that your bags are something special, worthy of a high price tag, peddling them next to diapers, flip flops, and canned beans may not be the best strategy.

Maybe they were thinking that if designers are collaborating with Target, so you can buy something from a high end designer at Target, people wouldn't think Kate Spade was cheap just for being in a grocery store. Whoever made that business decision wasn't thinking clearly.

Dumb move imo. If they are targeting affluent customers who also like handbags with their caviar and grass fed beef they could have chosen Central market and wholefoods. Then again people who shop there usually carry LV, MK(surprisingly), and I have seen a few goyard. I take note of what bags people carry and where when im out and about, I even complement them on their style and choice (sometimes)[emoji2]

I don't think the leather quality, or lack thereof, of KS bags is worth the full price or even the outlet prices. It seems Coach is trying to add to its portfolio more prestigious brands, I doubt they would take on a troubled brand.

Wow. I'm not much of a KS fan, though I did give her a try a while back. The leather is okay, as are the styles, but just not me. She makes some cute novelty bags that seem to be popular with her fans and cute, well made coin purses too. She seems to have matching keychains / purse charms as well.
