That sounds familiar. I think poudre texienne is just a more general term for it. It's excellent at getting rid of spot stains. But I've never used it to clean an entire piece. Does your friend recommend covering the whole scarf with it for a more general cleaning?

Gina, the powder is for spot cleaning. It kinda soaks up stuff like grease and then you can brush it off.
Ktown, I am informed that you find it in the detergent section of "Magasin Bio".
For all others not in France, it is the equivalent of Fuller's Earth and mostly sold in craft stores.l

Dear juliamike

The colourcatchers are made by a company in the UK called Dylon but I'm not sure if these are sold internationally. However I'm sure there is an equivalent available normally found in the stain treatment section of the washing products in supermarket/hardwarestore or haberdashery.

Basically they are a little white cloth that trap any free range loose dye in the washing water. I had a scarf that was a real 'runner' and even after a short little wash the cloth had gone from white to bright blue. I normally pop a couple of these in the wash just to make sure.

After a while you know what scarves are either colour secure or prone to loosing colour.

Good luck if you decide to take the handwashing leap.

Glad that the washing tips are coming in handy for you HS lovers.

Best wishes

I just saw this thread, and I'm a little late...but I wanted to share with you ladies that this dry cleaner is one of the best in the world...wherever I am, if one of my Hermes scarves has the tiniest spot, I'll send it here...and they NEVER fail me. I wouldn't trust them to anyone else. This dry cleaner is the best French laundry and DC around. They even have an expert seamstress who can create couture for you in the blink of an eye - and it's not cheap, let me tell you...all in all, they're amazing. If you're in Italy and have an emergency, you can send it in FedEx and have your baby back in less than a week! I have just received a beautiful scarf (Equitation Japonaise) and there are some very light lipstick marks on it as well as some light foundation makeup stains. It's hard to know how long they might have been there. Would someone please share tips on how to remove specifically lipstick from a cream colored field? I can return it to the original seller, but I love the scarf so much, I'd like to keep it.Thanks so much!

I had a similar experience with a scarf I found in a consignment shop in Paris (Neige d'Antan). It was a bit soiled, had some makeup/lipstick stains. I handwashed it (two rounds of handwashing) with Woolite (you can also use a drop of dishwashing liquid or get a special silk wash) and all the stains came out.

Once it was washed and rinsed, I rolled it up in a towel to get rid of the excess water. I draped it over the ironing board for @ 10 mins (I live in a very dry climate) till it was partially dry. Then I ironed it with a steam iron on the silk setting, spritzed it with a bit of Magic Sizing, and it was fresh and as good as new. No evidence of any stains.

Thank you so much for your reply. I also emailed the previous owner, and wondered if it makes a difference if the scarf had previously been dry cleaned vs. hand washed? Is it o.k. to handwash a scarf that has been previously dry-cleaned? This forum is so helpful!

Sure, I've done it a number of times, without any problems. Just treat it gently and it will love you back
