My initial reaction to this post was "wow, people can be &?£^ sometimes".

What a rude and unkind thing to say - it reflects a certain amount of bitterness in the woman who said it. Perhaps she was jealous of your newly-engaged friend or she had had a row with her unfortunate husband.

I'm sure your friend's ring is lovely, congrats on her engagement.

I had a *friend* who said something similar about my ring. She had just gotten engaged (I had been married for a year or two at that point) and a bunch of us, her sorority sisters, got together and planned a girls' dinner for her to show her ring off. So she comes in and we all ooh and ahh over it and she looks right at me and goes, "Yeah, it's not as big as yours but I went for quality over quantity." W. T. F.?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!??!?!?!?!?!?! What a b*%&$. I'm still nice to her to her face but I say mean stuff about her behind her back. Clearly an extremely mature reaction.

Wow, whatever makes her feel better about herself, I guess. That comment just reeks of jealousy! She must have some serious self esteem issues. As for the OP, you should have just responded with a hearty "I suppose you would know (cheap)!"
